3 out of 5 eggsWireless: Inferior to its predecessor (RAT 7)

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Extremely customizable mouse means great comfort.

Pinkie rest attachments for bigger hands.

With 2 battery packs and a charging base/wireless base, you can "hot swap" in between sessions quickly.

Extra slot on base to put my mouse weights(!)

Cons: Wireless mouse means that it is more prone to disconnect, and it has happened quite frequently for me.

Battery life, itself, is quite short. It only lasted for about 6-8 hours for me during sessions between gaming and work.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I do not recommend this mouse at all, due to the fact that it is a wireless mouse. I am more content in using a mouse that will not disconnect during sessions.

3 out of 5 eggsPtetty - but flawed

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Hardware is as advertised - very flexible.
Buttons are intuitive and easy to program (after a bit of practice).

Cons: Mouse triggers page back under Windows 10 (as of build 10074).
Customer service blows you off.
Drivers & registry entries have permissions that are hard to delete (obvious after a OS install).
Batteries are unreliable and do not last a long day.
This sucker is EXPENSIVE!

Other Thoughts: I first off - should have purchased the corded version (batteries suck).
Turns out the flexibility is not as important as I figured it would be (personal preference?).
For the value received - I should have looked at other (cheaper) mice.

2 out of 5 eggsWish I didn't buy it

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: It look cool and the customization is nice, I love the pinky and thumb rest.

Cons: 8-hour battery life isn't that big of a problem, they give you 2 batteries. Changing them is a pain. The shoe on the bottom doesn't come out far enough, so if you have the palm rest all the way out and you rest on that it will lift the front of the mouse up. The only way to know when your battery is dieing is a flashing light on the mouse, it starts flashing at 25%.

Other Thoughts: The first one I bought, the batteries wouldn't charge all the way. The one I have now is changing the dpi settings all on its own.
For what I paid you'd think quality control would be better.

1 out of 5 eggsBad idea

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Wireless. adjustable palm and thumb rests. Lots of buttons.

Cons: This mouse has consistently had issues with random freakouts and behaves as though it has a mind of its own. I have downloaded all of the latest software and driver updates for this mouse and I have not yet seen any cessation to its frequent and consistent jerking around the screen as though I was shaking the mouse when it was sitting perfectly still. The DPI setting also randomly changes itself with no user input. The batteries on this device are also very weak needing to be swapped at least every day and getting worse as time goes on. For anyone used to a mouse that works as it should, I would recommend steering clear of this junk.

2 out of 5 eggsNot my favorite

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Customize this thing however you want. Feels good. Has options, weights etc

Cons: the sensor sucks on this mouse. The cursor moves like its on sandpaper. I have the sensor in front of the mouse to enhance signal and it doesnt do anything. The battery needs swapping a lot, good thing you have 2 of them. I just bought a new mouse today, Logitech wired mouse. Never buying wireless again. Figured for the price they had it figured out., not the case. Wont buy again.

Other Thoughts: I wish I could get my money back

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the time and money

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Looks great, feels right and options are good.

Cons: Thumb rest is a bit weak for all the pressure you'll be using for the three side buttons. The back adjustment lock and support seems a bit flimsy and could be a little better engineered. Honestly, never got to try this unit. Got a generic email from Tech Support and decided to send it back and buy two other mice instead, that will probably last longer and be just as fast, if not faster.

Other Thoughts: I tried to install this on three different machines, just to make sure I was not getting something wrong. Also, for the money you pay it really should come with some type of software... even a cheap jump drive would be enough. Thanks to Newegg for offering this unit, not their issue at all, total manufacturer failure in all areas, sorry... just how I feel. Sorry MadCatz... done with your products.

3 out of 5 eggs3 years later

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: This has been a fantastic mouse, I've loved the fact that it can quite literally feel any way I want it to given the adjustable everything.

Cons: The battery life is generally acceptable for the first year or two, but then it starts declining. No big deal, just replace the batteries... Except you can't. Availability on their website is spotty at best and as of yesterday, I couldn't order replacements to save my life. At this point, I've got the option of hoping I can find the individual cells to purchase and solder in or just replace the whole unit as one of the batteries is now entirely dead (~5 minutes charge) and the other holds for about 60 minutes. It's been 3 years, so I'm not disappointed by that fact. I'm really complaining about the lack of support they provide for a mouse that costs $150.

Other Thoughts: Newegg could/should carry the batteries/cells. Then I could toss a few other random things into my order ;)

4 out of 5 eggsGet the wired version

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: - It looks as good as you imagine.
- I have average hands and find its adjustments to be terrific.
- The weight and metal base is a godsend for someone like me who gets frustrated and slams the mouse down. The weight reminds me not to, and the metal base stands up if I do anyway.
- I LOVE the pinky rest. Giving my pinky something to push against adds a surprising amount of control.

Cons: Should have bought the wired version (R.A.T. 7).

- Just normal daily use (not gaming) the battery barely lasts a day (in fact the battery warning just started flashing as I write this).
- The mouse hasn't dropped connection with the base station, but the base station has dropped the USB connection to the PC.
- The mouse will intermittently stutter in response as if the resolution dropped to nothing. I have to turn the mouse off and back on.

Other Thoughts: - The battery is NOT hard to get out. I've never had an issue. Try wiping the potato chip grease off your hands first.
- I don't see much point to the sniper button. It's awkwardly placed, and I've never needed it before.

3 out of 5 eggsCould be a great mouse

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Great mouse with tons of customization but has two major flaws.

Cons: It feels great except the pinky rest could be wider but thats personal choice. Rests are adjustable so most probably wont have an issue. I do have two main reasons this mouse has gone from great to I wont buy another. First is it is extremely picky as to what mat it will work on. I have 4 mats it is suppose to work on and the razor destructor is the only on it works on and its still finicky on that. Second major problem is its a pain to setup on Linux operating systems but I'm a noob to Linux so many may not have a problem.

4 out of 5 eggsTons of customization, looks cool.

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: I've been searching for a mouse that will fit "man hands". I've tried a lot and this guy is up to the challenge. You can literally change the mouse and customize everything on it. I've only had it for a week but I've learning to love it and changing it everyday to get the best fit.

Cons: Battery lift does drain quickly depending on the DPI and how long you use the mouse. But it takes two seconds to pull out the spare and plug it in. No big deal.

Other Thoughts: I'll follow up on this review after I've played with this mouse for a bit.
