JVC 3.5mm/ 6.3mm Connector Circumaural Noise Cancelling Headphone

The new JVC HA-NC250 combines outstanding sound quality with advanced noise-canceling and isolation technologies to provide a superior listening experience. The HA-NC250’s noise cancellation circuitry includes feedback technology that constantly monitors the noise cancellation process. As a result, the headphones eliminate up to 85 percent of extraneous background noise. To further block noise, the HA-NC250 offers two JVC innovations that help isolate the listener from outside sounds. First, each earpiece employs a double housing structure for an extra sound insulation layer. Second, JVC developed a new technique for attaching the headphone’s smooth memory foam cushioned ear pads to the housing that helps isolate background noise. The smooth pads also enhance comfort. These sound isolation features, for which patents have been applied, are especially important since the HA-NC250 can be used with the active noise cancellation switched off. For the best possible sound quality, the new headphone uses a 40mm neodymium driver in each earpiece. For comfort and portability, the HA-NC250 is one of the lightest headphones in its class, weighing just 5.3 ounces. It folds flat, and when folded is slimmer than most competing models. Included with the HA-NC250 are a slim carrying case, a four-foot detachable cord, airline dual plug adapter, and ¼-inch plug adapter for use with many home audio and video components. The headphones use a single 1.5-volt AAA battery for powering the noise cancellation circuitry. Battery life is rated at about 50 hours.

4 out of 5 eggsInitially Fantastic

Pros: Great for dramatically decreasing plane engine noise. The noise cancelling works better at that frequency. High frequencies are not cancelled as much. I had tried some Bose NC first, but really like these better. The white noise on the Bose bothered me greatly. These are very comfortable.

Cons: Foam pads wear out after 5-8 years. That wouldn't be a problem, but I haven't been able to clearly find a suitable replacement. JVC ignored my question about where to locate them. This is why I gave them 4 stars instead of 5.

Other Thoughts: I **really** like these! It's really disappointing to be using some trashed foam pads.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed in less than 6 months

Pros: While it worked, it provide decent performance in a small package.

Cons: It failed after only 8 hours of use. The noise cancellation feature started to fluctuate, so I replaced the battery. After several batteries, I had to admit that it was just broken. It works intermittently which too annoying to be useful.

Other Thoughts: I tried to get some kind of warranty information, but it seems like JVC does not provide an explicit warranty. It's too bad, it was a nice set of headphones, but now I'll be cautious before a buy another JVC product.

4 out of 5 eggsGood on sale

Pros: Great sound, Good noise cancelling. Even without noise cancelling on they still sound pretty good. Noise cancelling is robust, took them on a plane and they really helped with the ambient plane noises.

Cons: Ear Fatigue, a bit of cut out if jostling too much with noise cancelling on.

My major gripe is that the pieces don't fit over your ears and rather press into them which can become uncomfortable after extended listening. In addition, I found that If I shake them around too much with noise cancelling on (example walking) that the sound cuts out periodically sometimes.

Other Thoughts: I picked these up from here for about 110.00 total, well worth it. At 195 i'd cough up the extra dollars for something that fits better/more comfortably.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: Cost, nice case, works well.

Cons: Get a bit of ear fatigue, battery placement.

Other Thoughts: I bought these primarily for the noise-canceling. I'm no audiophile, and haven't put them through any rigorous testing (or even really used them outside an airplane) but they sound good to me.
When I first put them on, I turned on the noise canceling before putting them on. I fidgeted around and finally got them fairly well situated and thought "these aren't that great." Then I took them off and was reminded how loud the cabin actually was. The problem is (at least for me) it takes a lot of adjusting and slight movements to find the sweet spot where it gets a good seal around your ear to block out everything. I had particular trouble on my right ear and it took a lot of fidgeting to get rid of that last bit of hissing. Once that's done, they're great. Knocks out a lot of the lower frequency roar from the engines.
I never wear headphones, so after a couple hours my ears needed a break from the pressure, but maybe they just need conditioning.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value if on sale

Pros: - got these on newegg for around $110 including shipping
- sound is quite full for their size and semi-circumaural design
- noise cancellation is adequate
- cord unplugs so phones can be used only for noise cancellation if desired

Never believed in active noise canellation headphones until I experienced another brand's product on a long-distance flight. Purchased these JVCs on sale so felt this was a good value. Haven't tried these on an airplane yet but imagine they'll do what I'd like them to, which is make music/ video soundtracks more clearly audible by cancelling out much of the ambient airplane noise.

Cons: - audible (and palpable) 'wooga-wooga' when not aligned perfectly
- battery replacement requires removal of earpiece
- cord is terribly thin and relatively short
- battery life varies, and weak or dead batteries can produce squeals or popping (I'd prefer a low beep, or at least that the led on the outside of the shell would blink when the battery is low)

My biggest beef with these is that I did experience some queasiness the first few times I wore these for an extended period (2+ hours with the active noise cancellation switched on). I could hear and feel a touch of 'wooga wooga.' It's hard to describe but if you've ever leaned way into a large tumble dryer at a laundr-o-mat while other dryers are running three or four machines to either side, that is the kind of 'wooga wooga' I'm talking about. I found I could reduce the sensation if I *very carefully* positioned the earpieces so each was directly across from the other. Not perfect, but workable.

Other Thoughts: Wish they were truly, fully circumaural (ie that the earpieces were big enough to fit completely around the ear), which would provide better passive noise canellation to start with.

As for the active noise-cancellation, it's worth considering your expectations. It's great for reducing fan noise, general office hum and other fairly constant and low-level sounds. It won't create anything near a completely 'clean' listening experience - you'll probably still hear your colicky baby and any neighborhood gunplay through these.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Quality

Pros: Great Sound Quality - After having these for almost a year and after comparing them to other headphones and earbuds in the same price range, I am very satisfied with my decision. The sound quality is Phenomenal compared to anything near this price range.

Noise Canceling - The noise cancellation feature does a great job of counteracting ambient noise. It also greatly enriches the sound quality and really brings out the bass. Also, for the estimated 50 hours-per-AAA battery, it's very possible to always have noise cancellation on.

Portability - These are extremely light headphones, and are very portable. The carrying case is very convenient as it has a pouch for placement of adapters/extra batteries/volume control cords. The case is not completely hard -shell, but is durable enough to protect the headphones in just about any circumstance. The headphones themselves are very light, which is refreshing because traditionally one has to sacrifice weight for sound quality.

Cons: These are the only minor nuisances I have found with the headphones thus far. They are, by no means, noticeable/bad enough to outweigh the cons.

Bass - While the bass is excellent with noise cancellation enabled, it is not as noticeable with the feature turned off. I can afford to have noise cancellation on all the time, so this does not faze me.

Nose Cancellation - While a very convenient feature, this may not be exactly when the casual consumer may be looking for. I expected the noise cancellation to vastly superior to anything I had tried before, but was surprised to discover otherwise. It does an exceptional job of blocking out all forms of ambient noise, but loud noises such as people talking nearby or the sounds of the bus ride will not be blocked out. If you are looking for something that will completely isolate you form outside noise, I would suggest noise-canceling earbuds. For example, I can hear almost nothing but music with my Klipsch Image s4's in.

Other Thoughts: To be honest, these are extremely good quality headphones, better than any in this price range I have tried, and I would seriously suggest buying them if you are interested in getting a jump-stat into higher-quality music playing devices. At the cost of 50 hours per one AAA battery (and from experience, I wouldn't doubt this to be correct) the noise cancellation is effective and efficient, and can be used at all times. If you are looking for absolute noise cancellation, however, I would suggest going whit noise-canceling headphones, which might lack in sound quality, but do completely isolate you form the outside world.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

Pros: Excellent noise cancelling (NC) - Used while mowing the yard, flying in a plane, the wife is talking (ok, sorry - not nice - no, I still hear her.) - does the job.
Comfortable - You may have to adjust it a couple times but after on the ears an hour or so, doesn't hurt (can't say that with the cheaper Sony's I tried).
User replaceable battery - I carry an extra rechargeable just in case.
Nice carrying case. It is roomy enough to hold my media player I take along with me when I travel on the plane. It isn't a hard shell or a super soft case - kinda in between. It is sturdy enough for my use.
Still can hear audio if NC is off.

Cons: On the ear design - wouldn't mind over the ear but it is a comfortable feel and fit. I have to adjust it a couple time to get it just right.
Replacing the battery isn't too bad but I don't like the twisting of the ear cup. Only did it once - pops back on with no problems.
You will notice a difference in sound volume when NC is on/off. Just turn it up if NC is off.

Other Thoughts: Some said the cord is short. I can understand that but I don't have my media device more than an arm's length away from me - so no issues on cord length.
It does reduce or eliminate a lot of background noise. I have tried several Sony products before getting this once.
Very happy with this product.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: Low cost
excellent noise cancellation
user replaceable battery

Cons: Not over the ear - at least for my ears
replacing battery by removing ear cup - Get squeamish as I feel I am going to break the cover but I have replace the battery twice and it snaps back on and is secure.

Other Thoughts: Some complain cable is too short. I usually use this device during airplane flights and I can tell a difference.
I have heard of "hissing" and "pop" sounds. I reposition the headphones and those go away - not sure what else to say about that.

I am glad I got these. I have tried Sony NC7 and NC40 and they don't even rate to this headphone. I see the price keeps dropping on this item.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

Pros: Comfortable
Easy to use
Long battery life
Great sound quality
Removable cord (also means it's replacable if it breaks/gets cut through!)
Good battery life
Good carry-case

Cons: A bit large (all noise-canceling are) for carrying around
Gets hot & sweaty if worn out in the sun for very long

Other Thoughts: I got these as a gift several years ago, they've performed wonderfully. The only time they didn't work as well, I discovered the battery (1x AAA) had run out so it was no longer noise-canceling. A new battery fixed it.

While I'm at it, about the battery - I should add the carry-case seems to be crush-resistant and includes a puch for accessories. There's plenty of room to fit an extra battery along with the stock accessories and maybe even your mp3 player. I can fit my headphones, stock accessories, one battery, and my Sansa Fuse mp3 player without crushing them.

To the person who had ringing in ears -- I had that once too. I find when turning on the noise-canceling feature I can reduce the volume of whatever I'm listening to by 1/3 to 1/2 and still "feel" like it's louder. You have the same risk using earbuds if it's too loud, that's not a product flaw.

I still keep earbuds with me at all times but these JVC headphones are my favorite hands-down for overall quality!
