2 out of 5 eggsNot worth the price

This review is from: Astro Gaming A30 Supra-aural Wired Headset + MixAmp Pro - Black

Pros: - Very light on the head
- Comfortable to wear for long periods of time
- Changeable earpiece covers

Cons: - I found the cord would always get twisted no matter what I tried to do.
- After about 2 months the earpiece screws broke on the right ear so i had to tap it back on for temporary use (Screws are too small)
- mic picks up sound through earpiece constantly throughout skype/mumble/vent etc.

Other Thoughts: 175$-200$ is no where near what these should be priced

5 out of 5 eggsGreat versatile gaming/media headset

This review is from: Astro Gaming A30 Supra-aural Wired Headset + MixAmp Pro - Black

Pros: Comfortable, lightweight, VERSATILE, sturdy build quality, and most importantly amazing sound quality for the size/price of the set. Also, you can use them as normal headphones without looking like you came from another planet.

I notice some reviewers say the on-ear design of the A30s is uncomfortable, it might just be a matter of taste because when I wear them I don't even notice them. When I use around-the-ear headphones my ears get hot because they are trapped in the cups, but the smaller on-ear set covers only the portion that sound enters, and keeps my ears from overheating over long hours of use.

Cons: Does not include cable with secondary microphone and smart phone/mp3 player control. However, you can buy this cable at MSRP for only $9.99 so I'm sure you can find it elsewhere for an even cheaper price.

Other Thoughts: Versatility: I bought this set because I wanted a high quality 7.1 headset to use with my PC, consoles, AND my MP3 player / phone. Let's face it, most gaming headsets are not meant to be worn in public, many times they need to be connected via USB to work, and most of the time they are just too bulky and don't have detachable microphones, preventing them from being acceptable "non-gaming" headphones. The A30s are on-ear, so they are nice and small, and they use a simple 3mm jack to get sound out of any device. Instead of looking like giant flamboyant gamer headphones, the sleek design looks more like that of a high-end audio company's set (Bose meets Audio Technica).

Microphone: The (boom) microphone quality is good. By testing the quality using recording software, I found the input quality to be higher than expected. My voice came through crystal clear with minimal background noise, this is from a detachable microphone!

Sound: To be able to say a headset sounds good, you need to have access to high quality headsets to test them against. In my case, I tested the A30s against my Sennheiser HD 380 Pro phones. The HD380 Pros as of today are $199 on Newegg just for headphones, they are also so large and heavy. I would never wear them in public. Of course, the HD380s sound a little bit better than the A30s, but not by as much as I thought they would. For $199 MSRP you can get the A30 + the Mixamp Pro to use for your PC or consoles as an external virtual surround card/mixer.

Conclusion: If you are a gamer looking for a headset with a virtual surround enhancer who also needs a nice pair of on-the-go headphones, these are your best choice.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Ubuntu 12.10

This review is from: Astro Gaming A30 Supra-aural Wired Headset + MixAmp Pro - Black

Pros: Good sounding, I guess. I got these to work on Ubuntu 12.10.

Cons: A little pricey. The manual doesn't say anything about PC setup, it only mentions xbox and playstation.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you have all the necessary Pulseaudio addons installed. I had to install some to find the config and set up the mic. I almost RMA'ed these because I thought I wouldn't be able get these to function fully.

I use these to game on Linux( Steam Linux beta).

3 out of 5 eggsOk i guess

This review is from: Astro Gaming A30 Supra-aural Wired Headset + MixAmp Pro - Black

Pros: Sound good, I'm no audiophile though. Can get pretty loud. The amp looks cool on my desk, people keep asking what it is.

Cons: I can't seem to get the microphone to work. The set uses a duplex cable with a splitter for the signal and mic. The mic loops back into the phones and I can hear myself but my computer is not getting any mic signal or the mic is just really quiet.

Oh and these are NOT circumaural, unless you have the ears of an infant, these are supra. See other thoughts on this.

Other Thoughts: The manufacturer website/manual claims these will work with linux. It is recognized on usb for output only. No mic.

They fit comfortably over my glasses. Better than other circumaural sets I've owned.
