4 out of 5 eggsLuxury Portable

Pros: 1) wood driver housings
2) lambskin earpads and protein leather headband
3) butter-smooth midrange
4) tight bass
5) comfort level after break in
6) quality of build materials

Cons: 1) highs roll off a bit
2) plastic holding housings to band seems cheap and breakable
3) cost for a portable headphone
4) leather pouch for carrying - a hard case to protect these would beauties would be better

Other Thoughts: These are phenomenal headphones, especially for portables. Worth every penny. They are good without an amp, but I have them team with a Fiio E11 which really brings out the bass and mids.
If I wear them out and about - people are always stopping me to ask about them (which is sometimes a blessing and sometimes a curse!).
I would recommend these for anything ranging from classical to rock. would not recommend for hip hop/electronica (try the Audio Technica E10's for that).
I knocked one egg off for price and the soft case, but otherwise these are luxury portables with the sound to match.
These also have a bit of a tight fit initially, but after a few weeks they break in nicely.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Cans

Pros: My wallet doesn't allow me to be a complete audiophile but I am willing to spend a respectable amount on a good pair of headphones. First off, read the reviews, though not super popular or well-known, the ESW9A do get the proper respect. I agree with most, it's not that these cans do one thing great, the sound is balanced from mids to highs. If you want a lot of bass then you might go for other cans. Sounds leakage is not too bad. I use a Sony MP3 walkman. In my opinion, these headphones are good for jazz, vocals, pop, and classical. If you are a heavy metal listener and want tremendous bass there are other alternatives in this price range. As for size, they are not big, they cover my ears but not with a lot of extra room left over. For example, the Sennheiser HD595 are a lot roomier but the cost is a bigger set of cans. The ATH-ESW9a is not tight on my head but I shave my head so someone else may have a different experience.

Cons: Price is cheaper on other websites like A....zon but I needed them next day for a trip. The ones on A...zon are sold by Beach Camera and may not have been delivered on time. Shop around.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you give these headphones time to burn in, about 40 hours worth of listening. It's true, they get better over time. I couple the headphones to a Headroom Total Airhead portable amplifier. No complaints, the two work together well. The headphones work well without an amp but if you want a boost they will shine a bit more.
