Rating: 5/5They are great sounding..NO doubt about that
This review is from: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones - White
Pros: NOT Black :-) Hard Shell Case w/ zipper Inner storage for cabling Experienced sound company
I evaluated the StreetAudio using an ASUS Xonar DGX 5.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Express soundcard, a Hisense Sero 7 Pro Tablet with Quad Core CPU ( as of this writing I cannot determine the sound chip type) and an Acer Aspire AS4830T-6678 Intel Core i3 laptop. The highest quality sound came from the Asus soundcard the weakest from the tablet.
Cordage : The removable non iPod connecting cable is 48 inches long. The dedicated iPod cable has a couple more inches to facilitate the inline controller (which I can't evaluate beyond writing that it feels solid). I noticed during the unpack that the cables were "gently" wrapped by a non-twisted twist tie. This was done with purpose. These headphones can be daisy chained and the directions graphically state they are NOT to be knotted. If you kink the cable I fear it could fail, so at the factory the twist ties are gently wrapped. The cables are not to short for use with tablets or a front panel computer connection but if you have to hook your sound to the rear of your box you may find them too short. The connection ends are well made and the cable is made from high grade supple plastic that won't tangle.
Signal: I listened to three forms of input: Music (MP3 and CD audio), Movie / TV for ambient outdoor sounds and PC games. I chose music that I am completely familiar with. The first thing I noticed was the bass. It is outstanding. Best I have ever heard in a headphone. Use any adjective you want...full, deep, punchy, accurate, etc. I was so impressed with the overall sound I was inspired to rip several CD's.
I listened to The Walking Dead DVD because there are frequent sounds of summer going on. I thought the flies were going to carry me away and the crickets made me long for warmer weather. The train crossing the bridge over the Kwai is an outstanding signal to evaluate bass from the train explosion and ambience from the jungle sounds and river water. The StreetAudio's are magnificent, very spatial. Games allow for all facets of sound to be evaluated. I played Dishonored and STALKER. Both games sounded eggcellent and I heard sound previously hidden to me.
Considerations: Mostly the headphones are plug and play. The Asus Xonar has a software setting that allows for headphone gain tuning. I set it to match that of the StreetAudio 32 OHMs. The results increased the volume. Drill down into your soundcards settings and adjust if necessary.
Cons: They are smaller than they should be. See Other Thoughts.
No inline controller for anyone but the ipadpodmini crowd.
Other Thoughts: What is an audiophile? I call them audiowrenches...phile, wrench, get it? Everyone is an audiophile. I like how that sounds or I don't like how those sound. My first set of headphones were paper speakers I took out of my phonograph after it failed. I held them to my ears and listened to Also Sprach Zarathustra. Since then I have had more headphones then I can recall. I have had open air, over the ear, ear buds (yuck) and noise cancelling. All have advantages but none compare to the iX1's.
MTX refers to the iX1's as "On Ear Acoustic Monitors" They are well made, feel very solid and mostly comfortable. I think it very important to give some critical measurements. To merely write they are too small does a service to no one. How big are your ears? How big is your head?
Around my head at ear level is 21-22 inches. Around my head from chin to crown is 25 inches. Over my crown from ear central to ear central is 15 inches. My ears measure 2 7/16 inches tall and 1 1/2 wide. The inner dimensions of the StreetAudio earcup are 1 3/4 inches by 1 3/8 inches. My ears fit the space allotted by the ear cups and padding Initially the StreetAudios are very comfortable and if I was younger they would probably be comfortable longer.
As it is, after an hour my head feels squished and I can't wait to get them off. There is a purpose to the fit though. They do an excellent job of isolating the listener from their surroundings. That is their design type. Isolation. Does your sweet baby like to vacuum? Mine does, everyday. While wearing the StreetAudios I can barely hear her as she passes by and what I can hear isn't as annoying. They do a better job of drowning her out then my noise cancelling Sony's.
If you want headphones to use with Android/iPod or laptop the StreetAudio's 32 ohm impedence is specifically designed for you.
It makes sense from a production standpoint to price these at a premium level. Those that purchase iPods are generally willing to spend more for their gear or they might have gone Android. I am not sure why the controller was included strictly for iPod unless it is a format consideration.
These are the sweetest sounding most well crafted headphones I have owned. The bottom end is killer, everything else? Clear and detailed ! If you want great you have to spend some money. I am not disappointed with the StreetAudios in any regard and recommend them with the reservation that if you have a big head it may get squished a tad.
