3 out of 5 eggsSEXY MOUSE, Great Design, Poor Build Quality

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.5 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Customizable weight/mouse length, and separate side-scroll wheel are really nice features. Mouse feels great in my hand. When it works, it's terrific. But most of all, this thing's sexy.

Cons: This is my second RAT 5, the first mouse's right-click button failed after just over a year. Back when I was researching, this was apparently a known issue with RAT mouses.

I held off on getting a second, despite every urge to get another one of this SEXY MOUSE. But after shopping around and failing to find a suitable replacement I decided to buy it again but get the 3-year warranty with it. It's definitely worth having the mouse, but not worth paying full price every year for a new one. TRUST ME, GET THE 3 YEAR WARRANTY.

Other Thoughts: Would be the perfect mouse if it was cheaper (say, $50), or if MadCatz decided to fix the issue. Really wanted to give it 5 stars, but there's no way I can do that if it's known to fail relatively quickly. If you can afford the mouse and the warranty though, it's no doubt that this mouse could is winner.

1 out of 5 eggsTracking problems

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.5 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Very comfortable and customizable.

Cons: First 6 months of owning the mouse it stopped tracking, I returned it and was given a newer model and after another year that one stopped tracking as well. I don't think it is too much to ask for a mouse to last more than a year.

Other Thoughts: I wold recommend this mouse highly if it wasn't for the fact that the laser goes out in little to no time.

3 out of 5 eggsEnd of life review

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.5 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: -Comfortable
-Customizable
-Nice button layout.
-Accurate sensor for a laser
-Good external build quality
-Thumb rest
-Decent software

The overall user experience I had with this mouse is actually fairly good. I have big hands and use palm grip, all of the buttons that I used on the mouse are positioned well for me.

Cons: -My right mouse button did fail prematurely with this mouse after about a year. I replaced both switches with new omron switches then. ( this is why I really can't give this mouse a high rating.)
-The braided cable got stiff and looks horrible. I can't wait for more companies to just go back to a soft rubber cable.
-If you ran the palm rest all the way out the mouse had the tendency to lift the front up if you weren't careful.
-The teflon pads wore out fairly quickly as well.
-Having this mouse open to repair it I've seen that the pcb is not the best made part of this mouse.
-I did find the thumb scroll wheel to be a bit fidgety to use sometimes between the software implementation, feel and its location.
-Laser finally stopped tracking which appears to be a known issue due to the poor pcb quality

Other Thoughts: I found the mouse to be plenty heavy without the included weight system.

I did own this mouse for about 4 1/2 years which would have been 1 year if I hadn't been able to replace the switches.
I have owned a logitech mx518 since 2006 and it still works with all the original parts, and a deathadder since 2009 with no issues as well. So as much as I like the feel of this mouse the build quality just isn't there.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.5 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Length and weight adjustability, low profile, little glide resistance, aim and selectable dpi buttons, accurate sensor, completely rubberized, braided cable, and the most solid construction I've felt on a mouse. It's actually very comfortable to use.

Cons: Absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a good gaming and general use mouse, this is a very good choice :)

2 out of 5 eggshorrible customer support for faulty product

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.5 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: the mouse is comfortable and works really well for a short time. the product feels good in hand and is configurable to what ever you like be it gaming or power user.

Cons: customer service and support are definitely lack luster ( understatment) - after you jump thur the hoops to prove that it does not work, you have to interface with a ticket system that is cumbersome. Hopefully you will get you RMA instead of having to dig for it yourself.

Other Thoughts: the product seems really nice and does work well when it works, once the laser stops working kiss your hard earned money good bye. and if you do get and RMA be prepaired to pay the shipping to send it back

3 out of 5 eggsIf I had to do it all again I would...

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.5 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: *Nice Feel and construction
*Nice adjustable features
*Looks Kewl

Cons: *sometimes it will not track correctly and requires tapping it on the mouse pad to work. I blew it out with compressed air can and would still do it.

*High price tag for a mouse

*Not as accurate as a cheap Logitech Mouse I have in shooter games

*Software feels accelerated but no option to disable feels built into the software/drivers. Yes I disabled the windows acceleration and other mice track fine

*In shooters like Arma 3 it is harder to get headshots because the crosshairs sways around the target. Like shooting from a rocking boat in the waves.

Other Thoughts: After using this mouse for 1 year it now sits in my mouse drawer. It works it looks good and I know I spent a fortune on it. However I get better gaming performance form cheaper mice that are less than half the price. When buying a mouse for gaming and overall OS navigation it's more than just the hardware. The hardware needs good software to make it work properly.

4 out of 5 eggsLooks like a Transformer

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.5 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Works perfectly for my stupidly big hands. It has a great feel and works great for gaming.
I would definitely like to note that this is my first gaming mouse so its great to have multiple posibilities for Mouse weight, Palm rest size , and DPI settings and such.

Cons: The X and Y axis "lock up" in a sense that you can move it up and down or left to right which gets albeit it doesn't happen very often, It does get annoying especially while gaming.
The slide tray is starting to feel a little wobbly.
As someone else also commented, after using the Page Forward
button as my Press To Talk in TS for a couple months it's now becoming unresponsive(though it's partially my fault because knew that it was too flimsy looking to handle constant use)

Other Thoughts: Upon showcasing it to my friends, one of them commented "It looked like a Transformer"
After initially getting my hands on a Glossy White model with the mechanism for the Palm Slide Tray not unlocking I switched it out for this Model.

2 out of 5 eggsNot much longevity.

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.5 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Love the feel and weight customization of the mouse. I also really love the ability to map the buttons to whatever key I want. As far as when it's working its a really good mouse.

Cons: This is my second Rat mouse and both of the mice around the 9 month mark would periodically stop tracking vertically. For about 6 seconds at a time the mouse will only let you move right to left then all of a sudden it will snap out of it and start working again. If you spend ANY amount of time playing online do not bother. I'm 2 for 2 with the same problem on both the Rat 9 and the Rat 5.

Other Thoughts: If you want to buy a new mouse every 9 months then feel free to buy it. Otherwise I would get something that's more consistent.

5 out of 5 eggsFirst Thoughts: So Far So Good

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.5 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: Keep in mind that the mouse just arrived TODAY, so I've only been using it for a few hours.

SHAPE: The shape is awesome. I was a little worried that it'd be uncomfortable. I think that RAT 7 has a pinkie rest, that feels like it's the only thing that's missing. The thumb rest is awesome though. It's also very adjustable, with the back plate moving pretty far back (too far back for me), and also very close (too close for me). So it should fit just about anyone.

The weights are also awesome, and give it a great weight with all of them in it. I was wondering how heavy it would be, but it definitely feels like a quality product, pretty heavy with the weights there. Taking them out makes it around regular mouse weight.

The mouse is definitely very comfortable, and easy to get used to.

The scroll wheels both feel very satisfying to move, I'm definitely a huge fan of them.

The DPI switcher is actually two buttons, one to go up and one to go down. There are 4 DPI levels, all customizable, and indicated on the left side by 4 red lights. I absolutely love this. I stick on level 2, but my friend likes level 3. No more going into Windows sensitivity settings all the time!

Also the precision aim button is customizable and works perfectly. I think it works based on a ratio of the current DPI, which is nice (so it's not a set DPI).

Cons: One minor actual thing is that the precision aim button registers slightly after the "click" of the button itself. This leads to it being a little finicky if you stop pressing in after you feel it click.

So basically you click it, hold it in pretty hard, and it's fine. But then if you let go a little (but not enough to unclick the button), and it will kind of stop being pressed a little.

So the precision aim button isn't perfect on my model, I haven't heard this complaint anywhere else though so it's very possible that it's an isolated incident. I've already gotten used to how hard I need to press it.

The final con, in my opinion, is the software. It's not actually bad, it's just not great. I also bought the SteelSeries Apex RAW keyboard, and they arrived at the same time. The SteelSeries Engine software is much easier to use and nicer looking. Don't get me wrong, this software works fine, it's just a little confusing sometimes and does things that I don't quite want it to do (like setting a new bind to all of my profiles, when I was only on one). It's barely a con, I was actually about to put the software under "pro", but I figured it actually wasn't amazing.

Other Thoughts: I'd still definitely recommend the mouse.

Keep in mind that I've heard things about them breaking over time, and I've only had mine for a day. So far it's awesome, but we'll see what the future holds.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Mouse

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.5 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Matte Black

Pros: *adjustable
*surprisingly good feel
*easy to adjust dpi settings
*nice software
*looks cool
*scrol-wheel is great

Cons: *The side buttons have started dying pretty quickly
*I don't know if mine is defective or not, but even with software no program will detect movement of the horizontal scroll wheel
*Mouse will stop moving in one direction fairly often (either up/down or left/right) I would assume from a slight amount of gunk getting in it, I use a mouse-pad and keep it clean. never had this issue with another mouse

Other Thoughts: I don't think if I would recommend this to someone else for full price, but it has served its purpose better than other mice I have had. Would have been better off putting the money towards something else
