5 out of 5 eggsFirst Thoughts: So Far So Good

Pros: Keep in mind that the mouse just arrived TODAY, so I've only been using it for a few hours.

SHAPE: The shape is awesome. I was a little worried that it'd be uncomfortable. I think that RAT 7 has a pinkie rest, that feels like it's the only thing that's missing. The thumb rest is awesome though. It's also very adjustable, with the back plate moving pretty far back (too far back for me), and also very close (too close for me). So it should fit just about anyone.

The weights are also awesome, and give it a great weight with all of them in it. I was wondering how heavy it would be, but it definitely feels like a quality product, pretty heavy with the weights there. Taking them out makes it around regular mouse weight.

The mouse is definitely very comfortable, and easy to get used to.

The scroll wheels both feel very satisfying to move, I'm definitely a huge fan of them.

The DPI switcher is actually two buttons, one to go up and one to go down. There are 4 DPI levels, all customizable, and indicated on the left side by 4 red lights. I absolutely love this. I stick on level 2, but my friend likes level 3. No more going into Windows sensitivity settings all the time!

Also the precision aim button is customizable and works perfectly. I think it works based on a ratio of the current DPI, which is nice (so it's not a set DPI).

Cons: One minor actual thing is that the precision aim button registers slightly after the "click" of the button itself. This leads to it being a little finicky if you stop pressing in after you feel it click.

So basically you click it, hold it in pretty hard, and it's fine. But then if you let go a little (but not enough to unclick the button), and it will kind of stop being pressed a little.

So the precision aim button isn't perfect on my model, I haven't heard this complaint anywhere else though so it's very possible that it's an isolated incident. I've already gotten used to how hard I need to press it.

The final con, in my opinion, is the software. It's not actually bad, it's just not great. I also bought the SteelSeries Apex RAW keyboard, and they arrived at the same time. The SteelSeries Engine software is much easier to use and nicer looking. Don't get me wrong, this software works fine, it's just a little confusing sometimes and does things that I don't quite want it to do (like setting a new bind to all of my profiles, when I was only on one). It's barely a con, I was actually about to put the software under "pro", but I figured it actually wasn't amazing.

Other Thoughts: I'd still definitely recommend the mouse.

Keep in mind that I've heard things about them breaking over time, and I've only had mine for a day. So far it's awesome, but we'll see what the future holds.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Mouse

Pros: *adjustable
*surprisingly good feel
*easy to adjust dpi settings
*nice software
*looks cool
*scrol-wheel is great

Cons: *The side buttons have started dying pretty quickly
*I don't know if mine is defective or not, but even with software no program will detect movement of the horizontal scroll wheel
*Mouse will stop moving in one direction fairly often (either up/down or left/right) I would assume from a slight amount of gunk getting in it, I use a mouse-pad and keep it clean. never had this issue with another mouse

Other Thoughts: I don't think if I would recommend this to someone else for full price, but it has served its purpose better than other mice I have had. Would have been better off putting the money towards something else

5 out of 5 eggsSolid as it is outrageous

Pros: I had the pleasure to get a r.a.t 5 when they first came out, and although it was sorta a gamble considering the price and company making them, this thing turned out to be more than worth it. My original rat of 3 years ago, still working, made it through me thrashing it in games, even raging and throwing it a few times and hours and hours of hard clicking and scrolling. Although the ergonomics look questionable, I can assure you its the most comfortable mouse youl ever grasp. After hours of daily use I have healthy wrists to show for that. Aside from its uniquely awesome looks, the real reason you get this thing is the superb layout of the buttons. Fully retracted inward the rat is fairly small, and gives you great control over the thumb scroll wheel, and other auxiliary buttons, especially in the midst's of an intense gaming session. You can macro all types of things to the scrollwheel in software which has helped me out alot over the years. I purchased one again, after refunding a razr naga, and trying out the Logitech g whatever it is. The r.a.t's software is great, and the on-the-fly dpi adjustment switch is a life saver.

Cons: As much as I love the thing, it certainly could be improved upon. Cons include:

Hard to reach sniper button, they should really move it in more.

The palm adjustment honestly is best left alone, and in the factory position.

Non mechanical side buttons. Theyr still great, but could feel better.

Double clicking can occur in the left and right mouse switch after some use. But blowing it with compressed air and cleaning it with alcohol can fix it.

The sensor area underneath can collect junk pretty easy so it needs to be cleaned out once in a while.

Also if you eat and get greasy hands, over time the rubberized coating can peel off.

Doesn't have a million buttons for macro'ing like the naga. Its more fps oriented but that doesn't mean it cant
do mmo's just fine.

Madcats is actually charging more for it than they used to, when this originally came out.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully this new version holds up like the old one did. As far as i can tell the build quality is just as good. I could ramble on and on about the r.a.t but honestly you just have to try it out. Certainly makes your desktop look unique. I have people ask me all the time "IS THAT A MOUSE?!"

2 out of 5 eggsdisappointment

Pros: dpi does not disappoint. fits well, very ergonomic.

Cons: 3 months after i bought this mouse, the 'forward' button on the side wore out. i use that button quite a lot, so on a normal mouse i would understand, but this thing costs to much to have such a bad design. i expect the thing to last at least a year... and by that i mean all the buttons, not just the primaries.

also, on occasion, the mouse flips out and does not respond to left / right movement. rather ridiculous, really, for something that costs this much.

Other Thoughts: stay away if you actually need more than two buttons. you will chaff them into oblivion quickly. the constitution of the parts / plastics are very disappointing.

The customer support for the rat 5 was terrible.

Other Thoughts: Did not last long, the switch to the mouse button broke twice. they replaced the first mouse and then months later the next mouse broke.

2 out of 5 eggsStunning beginning terrible ending

Pros: This is a solid mouse in the hands of CS and FPS. Great daily driver as well for a RM&M Technician. The ability to adjust is great for someone like myself being on a PC for 14-18hrs/day.

Cons: I noticed about a week ago that the mouse began to stick on a vertical, requiring a right click to get the mouse to regain full functionality across the screen. I went as far as moving the mouse to an imaging station I use that has a fresh OS install to rule out other hardware and OS faults to no avail. Cleaned and inspected the cable. Found nothing. Hey Mad CAtz I have an old Dell PS2 and it is more reliable than this $80 mouse. I understand things break or wear out but not like this for a user that has more PC toys in his house than total GF's and I 32. Trying to make a point with that. Dont take it too harshly Mad Catz, just put my reputation on the line for this product at my job. Now waht am I supposed to do?

Other Thoughts: I would look at other options for a replacement mouse first. Consider the warranty for this product before buying. 1 yr seems a bit weak considering I have a two year warranty on my Bluetooth headset and a 5 year warranty on my Sabertooth Z77 board.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat but unreliable

Pros: Good fit
Smooth
Button positioning

Cons: Broke twice on me.
Poor customer support.

Other Thoughts: Got this mouse a while ago, about a year so. In that time, I had two issues. First issue, one of the side buttons stopped working within the first month of owning the mouse. Contacted MadCatz and after several emails to them trying to get help, they finally contacted me back after about 2 months. They had me RMA the mouse and they send me a new, so another 2 months that took.

Now and just today, the mouse cursor doesn't move with it anymore. I can still click scroll and all that, but the cursor won't move. Tried on two different computers with same problem. Uninstalled everything pertaining to the mouse and reinstalled, same issue. So the mouse is completely useless now.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat mouse

Pros: very precise, good button functionality, good customizability, also replacement parts available from cyborg. My first gaming surface was a solid plastic top with foam bottom, incredibly slick but abrasive against the slick feet (now I have the gigantic cyborg surface, still slick but soft surface). It ate thru the feet in about a year, but cyborg sent me a replacement set-they also now sell a replacement pack along with spare grip panels. I ended up getting the pinky rest set that comes with the rat7 and love the one that has the 'wing' to keep my pinky from contacting the gaming surface I have had this mouse for about 3 years, the buttons are all still crisp and the soft rubber surface has smoothed from use out but not worn through. The separate profile would be great for multiple users, also the mode button is great when you have different setups for various games. It also looks incredibly awesome

Cons: pricey now, when these mice first came out the rat5 was an even $50, now that they have gone up to 70-80 there may be a better mouse for the money. If you have your heart set on it though, you will not be disappointed.

Other Thoughts: It is very low profile, so if you palm grip it may be awkward, personally I claw so it is not an issue for me.

5 out of 5 eggsDefinitely Impressed

Pros: After using cheap mice for most of my life, upgrading to the Cyborg R.A.T. 5 has made me never want to use a cheap mouse again. I love the feel and all of the customizable features. Also it's really smooth moving around, you don't really even need a mouse pad. Drivers are easy to install and the software is great.

Cons: The mouse is great, but when I showed it off to my roommate, I was instantly let down when he showed me all the features that come with his Cyborg R.A.T. 7. It really made me wish I had bought the better model, alas the R.A.T. 5 should work just fine for me.
