1 out of 5 eggsMouse dead, not even one year old

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Red

Pros: The only pro is that this was a great mouse when it worked.

Cons: Mouse was bought a little over five months ago. Died this morning, will no longer track movement at all. Have tried on two different systems to rule out software issue. Light on receiver no longer blinks when moving mouse, indicating hardware failure.

Other Thoughts: To have a piece of equipment this expensive not even last one solid year?

I will attempt a warranty replacement, and I will leave another review update depending on how that goes.

4 out of 5 eggsComfortable but has issues

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Red

Pros: The adjustments you can make (physically) are really nice.

Never thought the delay of my old wireless Logitech mx mouse was bad, but after using this thing, there is a huge improvement in the responsiveness when playing FPS

Cons: Same issue that a lot of people have with connectivity.

A) you have to remember to flip the switch on the mouse to OFF when you change the battery or the connection is done untill u unplug from tower.

B) When the computer goes into sleep mode, sometimes when it wakes up, you have to unplug and replug in the base.

not a huge deal, but worth an egg for a 150$ mouse

Other Thoughts: worthy upgrade if you have the $

I don't have a complaint with the battery life many people talk bad on. It really not all that bad since it comes w/ an extra battery.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat mouse, ok software

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Red

Pros: I was seeking a new mouse because I could not find a mouse that prevent the weight of my hand from eventually resting on the heel of my hand when playing, and after a time it would make my whole hand tingle and burn. I tried different grips, claw vs palm, and I tried wrist wrests, and none of that helped. Gaming mice are simply too small for my hands.

The RAT 9 is very adjustable--within a few hours of having the mouse, I had configured it very comfortably. The problem with the tingling and burning in my hand has not returned--making this very expensive gaming mouse worth every penny, in spite of a few issues.

Cons: The main issue has been the battery life. The batteries that shipped with the mouse last about a day on a charge with normal computing, and maybe five hours in sustained gaming. They will die on you when you least expect it, and changing the battery requires removing the palm-rest from the mouse--not a big deal, just an extra few seconds you don't usually have in the middle of a game.

The mouse will sometimes lose its connection to the computer when changing batteries. While it's rare, it happens. Unplugging the USB plug and then plugging it back in fixes the issue.

You do have to keep the sensor of the mouse clean and only run it on a clean mouse pad. It is crazy sensitive to this--even dust that you can't easily see with the eye can mess up the tracking. I have gotten in the habit of spraying the sensor with compressed air about every third day to prevent problems. I have used several other brands of mouse and have never seen one so crazy sensitive to dust on the lens as the RAT 9 is.

The mouse is back-heavy and this can make precision clicking a challenge. You can add weight but it adds to the back of the mouse--it makes the problem worse, not better.

The software is ok--not outstanding, but not lacking in essential features either. It did have a bit of a learning curve, so give yourself a bit to figure it out before you give up on it.

Other Thoughts: The RAT 9 is really a pretty cantankerous piece of equipment for its price--you would expect a "plug it in / use it / forget about it" mouse but that's not what this is. If you aren't changing batteries you are spraying the sensor or adjusting the DPI so you can actually click on that little icon.

The one saving grace of this mouse, and it is a huge one to me, is its ergonomics. It works for large hands and I think it may have saved me a considerable doctor's bill. This is entirely how it earned its four stars for me.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor battery life

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Red

Pros: Modern design, high quality construction

Cons: Battery life is terrible compared to other Rat 9 models. Have to swap every 2 days. Sometimes I have to unplug/plug the USB port to get the mouse to respond. I've never had that issue with any other Rat 7/9 mice.

3 out of 5 eggsBattery failure

This review is from: Mad Catz R.A.T.9 Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac - Red

Pros: The RAT 9 is a very responsive mouse with lots of buttons to push and easy profile setup. The percision aim button makes this a great gaming mouse

Cons: Without the 2 batteries it is useless. It takes three hours to fully charge the batteries. I have to use my old Razer Mamba with or without a cord while the one battery charges.

Other Thoughts: I read one of the tech say that there were 2 batteries becuase it takes a lot of power to run this mouse. He is right but I would not at this point suggest anyone to buy this product unless you want to find a battery supply source. They say they are selling them but the battery is always sold out. I have seen this on YouTube. which suggests that the manufacture already knows there is a battery problem.
