Crossfade M-80 On-Ear Pure Noise Isolating : METAL : Headphones

METAL

"V-MODA's M-80 has earned its way into the collective psyche of headphone audiophiles as one of the
top choices for a portable headphone, based on its sound quality alone.
It's built as tough as a Vault, yet looks like the product of an Italian design house."

- HEAD-FI Founder, Jude

"M-80 reigns supreme due to its combined attributes and qualities ...
GAME CHANGERS in the area of supra-aural headphones."

- Best Headphones Guide

"Every genre of music and all of the videos we tested with the new Crossfades,
sounded pretty close to great right away."

- iLounge

"Oh.My.Goodness! These are my new favorite headphones ...
Killer looks; killer sound (good bass, too)."

- InnerFidelity + Stereophile Editor, Tyll Hertsens

"The sound of the headphones is excellent, with some seriously punchy bass
and a really clean and crisp high end."

- iCreate Magazine

Refusing to conform to the sound-age of over-processed digital compression and disposable products, M-80 is a salute to the true masters of music, machines and materials.

Size Comparison

Pure Sound
The nucleus of M-80 is its patent-pending and biggest-in-class 40mm Dual-Diaphragm Drivers that deliver multi-driver sound with the energy efficiency and consistent quality of a single driver. To recreate a pure balanced sound analogous to Vinyl, M-80 uses no batteries or artificial sound processing and instead relies on immortal acoustic techniques.
No batteries needed

Natural BLISS Isolation
Supple BLISS memory foam ear cushions naturally isolate noise and immerse you into your own world of sound. The specially tuned V-PORT V3 and memory cushions create a true 3D sound stage versus fully closed-back headphones by directing air out of the ports to maintain tranquility. It's the perfect balance of isolation, staging and ergonomics that makes M-80 the essential companion for long play sessions on smartphones, notebooks, and tablets.

Sophisticated Style
M-80's first-class materials are virtually indestructible including a steel frame, STEELFLEX headband, interchangeable brushed metal shields, durable microfiber suede and replaceable memory foam cushions. The M-80 also comes fully loaded with two Kevlar-reinforced microphone cables for universal smartphone compatibility and an exoskeleton carry case for added road warrior armor.

Material Edge

"In the sound-age of over-processed digital compression and disposable plastic products, our virtues were to develop a quality product that salutes the true masters of music, machines, and materials. It's an incredible value for hi-fi sound and sophisticated style that says as much about you as your shoes, watch or car." says Val Kolton, V-MODA CEO and DJ.

"Try as I might, I can't find any significant faults with V-MODA's latest set of on-ear headphones,

- CTV News, Chad Sapieha (Crossfade M-80 and V-80 review)

Custom Shields
V-MODA believes in the ability to be unique and remix your headphone. With the M-80's interchangeable custom metal shields, you can choose from a selection of colors, designs, and even submit your own artwork.

Military-Level Durability
Using strict military testing guidelines (MIL-STD-810G), no company puts their product through more punishment and duress than V-MODA to ensure quality.

The M-80 is tested under strict MIL-STD-810G military testing and V-MODA’s even tougher VMQA guidelines, of which a few are listed below.

MIL-STD-810G and V-MODA Quality Tests
  • Kevlar reinforced detachable cables and 45-degree plug strain relief can each bend over 1 million times, over 100x industry standards
  • Survives 70+ drops on concrete from 6 feet, approximately three times the industry standard
  • Headband can bend 10+ times flat, not break and retain its memory and shape
  • Virtually inaudible sound variances across the spectrum of less than 2dB from unit to unit versus 10-30dB+ of inferior products
  • MIL-STD-810G environmental tests including high and low temperatures, humidity, salt spray and UV exposure
The Fit is the Sound
To make supernatural sound required supernatural ergonomics, as the fit can alter the sound up to 50dB with on-ear headphones. Additionally, most on-ear headphones are so uncomfortable they can only be worn for a few minutes, which is unsuitable for watching your favorite shows or jamming to your favorite mix in our modern mobile lifestyle.

The M-80's tailored fit is balanced enough to create a natural sound with a proper on-ear seal, and ensures there's never too much pressure on any part of the head at any time, so you can rock on deep into the night.

"Every genre of music and all the videos we tested with the
new Crossfades sounded pretty close to great right away."

- iLounge (Crossfade M-80 and V-80 review)

TrueHertz
Did you know that not all headphone drivers are created equally? Without rigorous quality testing, many headphones have variances from unit to unit of up to 30dB, even on the left to right channels. But V-MODA's strict driver testing program guarantees consistent quality and critically-acclaimed sound in every single pair of M-80 headphones, every time.

When it comes to the frequency response curve, the traditional old-school specifications people judge headphones by, such as 5Hz-30kHz does not paint a full picture. V-MODA sculpts the sound at every step along the entire frequency response range by utilizing a 31-band EQ, lab and subjective testing during the tuning stages.

5 out of 5 eggsHands-down best bang for your buck; maybe the only real high-quality headphone option for the rational consumer

Pros: Outstanding sound upgrade over the older, over-ear V-Moda LP design for an extremely modest additional cost. This on-ear M-80 design is known for being moderately 'neutral' while still packing some of the punch on the bass that the 50mm driver sets are known for. A lot of serious audiophile reviewers maintain that this M-80 design still beats out the newer and far more expensive M-100 model in terms of overall sound quality / profile, and having tried the M-100s, I would have to agree. Compared to competing options like the Sennheiser HD25-1 ii or the Beyerdynamic DT 1350 (the latter of which I also own), the M-80 on-ear fit benefits significantly from the narrower shape of the cup because it avoids the back of the cheekbone by the front of the ear, allowing for a much quicker/easier/better seal. Headband can also be bent to suit your head's shape for optimizing the fit. I will say that as long as you make some adjustments in bending the headband to suit your head, then the resulting on-ear fit of the cups will be better than anything you might get with the more expensive, higher-rated competitors.
Along with these comments, you can read a thousand reviews elsewhere that will praise the build quality and durability of the headphones along with praise for the accessories & packaging -- I would agree entirely with all of those common 'pros'.
I also think these are great for watching Blu-Ray movies on a computer as the bass really picks up a lot of what you might miss with built-in TV speakers.

Cons: One simply needs to come to terms with the idea that any on-ear design isn't a 'throw-on-&-play' type of set -- you're going to have to fidget for 20 seconds to get them in the right place on your ears (and in my opinion, it's really worth it, and the fit is still much better than you get with competing designs). You're also going to have to be willing to take advantage of the SteelFlex headband and physically bend & alter the shape of it to conform to your head (the fact that you can do this is a huge plus, but just realize that that's a normal adjustment people make with these). The highly-praised stock cables are a bit noisy -- I strongly suggest taking advantage of the detachable chord design by picking up a mic-less 3.5mm aux cable with a much lower-friction outer layer to reduce noise transmitted when the cable rubs against your clothing -- this is a HUGE plus for those who listen to slower/quieter music or that use them to watch video/movies.

Other Thoughts: There's a reason that this is the #1 rated on-ear set on Head-Fi -- you can rant & rave about another comparable product being marginally better, but if these M-80 cans cost nearly 40% less than something like a DT 1350, then anybody with a good head on their shoulders will start with this set.
One quick note about the person that gave these one egg while still saying the headphones 'sound good' -- if one is a Verified Purchaser, I don't see how s/he could have taken more than 30 days to open the package to realize that it was supposedly defective. Defective means that something was wrong with it the minute you opened the box. If you waited too long to be able to return for replacement with Newegg picking up the shipping tab, then that's on the buyer and really has absolutely nothing to do with the product. That's probably why that review is '0 for 6' on helpfulness -- it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent sounds but fitment issue

Pros: Decent sounds for the price.

Cons: Not really suitable for adult heads, but should fit kids head just fine. These headphones are just too small and doesn't adjust long enough making too snug on top of my head that it ends up hanging slightly over the edge on top which is not ideal. The right side also had some minor creaking when stretched/adjusted.

5 out of 5 eggsThe absolute best on-ear headphones that I have ever purchased

Pros: Crisp treble
deep, punchy, well rounded bass
defined middles
enormous soundscape (for such a small driver)
awesome looks
Incredibly well built - dropped from about 6' several times, no problems
compact

These headphones pretty much have it all. They sound amazing, especially if you break them in. Just listen to music with them for about a month, and the sound will just get better and better. Also, these headphones don't need an amp to sound good, which means you can pretty much plug them into any phone and be fine.

BUY THESE HEADPHONES

Cons: the only cons i can think of are that they can get a little uncomfortable if you wear them for more than about 3-4 hours, but if you are listening for that long, its time to give your ears a break anyway.

Also, the only other con I can think of is that the included cables are a little finicky. They do not work with some soundcards. Just get a nice insulated high fidelity cable, you will be very happy.

Other Thoughts: These headphones are definitely made for electronic music. That doesn't mean that they sound bad in other genres, but they really pull away from the pack with EDM.

Break them in, get a high quality 3.5mm cable, and you will love these headphones

5 out of 5 eggsabsolutly amazing

Pros: -Impressive frequency response that goes very high and very low all with one driver
-Detachable cable; this is something I've always wanted and finally I have it!
-iPod and Android compatible remotes
-Amazing sound quality!
-Comfortable for hours at a time
-blocks out outside noise, and isolates it's sound from the outside very well.
-Puts my fancy "desktop" 3-way speakers rated at 35 to 32khz to shame

Cons: The price, although these were worth every penny they cost me.

Other Thoughts: I went from a $20 pair of in ear earbuds from another store to these and WOW what a difference. I threw my earbuds away after that. Sure they are smaller and more convenient, but these sound so great that I did care about that.

Now all I need is a big fancy expensive DAC and I'll have something quite impressive.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: The major Pro is the quality. I listen to primarily heavier music and these headphones do an excellent job with treble and bass. I also listen to classical music and it rings through every note beautifully.
A small Pro is they look cool but I bought them based on quality, which they deliver.
There is a case that I keep clipped on my backpack for class. This keeps the protected from me dropping them when I am not using them and from getting wear from being around my neck.
The cable length for both cables are perfect and they tuck away nicely in the case when you are not using them.
The cable is removable from the headphones which is nice if you want to use different cables if you have your own.

Cons: I wear glasses and to be honest, unless I find the perfect position, the headphones hurt my ears within 10 minutes. As long as I find that perfect position, they are perfect and I have used for 8 hours in that position and they were completely fine.

Other Thoughts: If you want great headphones, I would consider these for best option for under 250. These come with a case and two cables. It is tough to be what these offer for the price and quality.
If these are on sale, buy them.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective

Pros: Headphone that does work correctly sounds good

Cons: One that doesn't work doesn't. Have to ship to V-Moda at my own expense to have it replaced for warranty. Will update if possible when replacement is received.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: I really like the slick design and the handy carrying case that comes with the headset. The sound has been very nice and have heard no irregularity from any audio that I have tried so far. Very sturdy design which is great since I can be a klutz sometimes. Noise cancellation is another plus its good to have a headset that gives you some immersion with whatever you are doing since I cant hear people when I am listening to music or playing a game it is a blessing.

Cons: The headset doesn't seem to have an adjustable head phones area so I have to wear the headset one way which is ok but the wire the plugs into the headset stretches from the left ear to the computer over to the right. Really just a placement issue. Hard to figure out the in line voice chat thing at first glance. Not to many negatives to go off of with this headset.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent sound; unbelievably durable

Pros: Excellent mid and high end response. Bass is very well balanced and not overwhelming like the Crossfade LPs. These are without a doubt the most durable headphones I've ever tried. V-Moda included THREE cables with microphones inline -- even more than advertised!

These things are SMALL! I have no problem sticking the awesome hard case they include into a book bag. Everything about these things screams quality

Cons: The memory foam earpieces are not for everyone, and they take a while to mold to your hears. During this process, your ears can hurt after extended listening sessions. If I listen to them for a very long time, I always come away with sore ears as my ears stick out. My girlfriend, who has flatter ears, has no problem with them over long periods of time.

The in-line microphone leaves much to be desired, as it rubs against your clothing and makes a lot of noise. It seems more like an afterthought than anything else, and I would have appreciated a little more effort going into the design. A clip, perhaps?

Other Thoughts: For the first couple of weeks of ownership, the sound quality on my M-80s was actually quite bad. I was disappointed after how much I loved the Crossfade LPs. The more I listened to them, however, the better they got. These babies need time to warm up. I highly recommend that you plug these headphones into your computer and run them on classical music for 48 hours to break them in.

The bass is not nearly as strong as the Crossfade LPs. If you love artificially heavy bass, try those, but the bass in the M-80s is very accurate and not boosted.

After the very good Crossfade LPs and the stellar M-80s, V-Moda is now my favorite audio company. I'll never buy another company's over-ear headphones.
