5 out of 5 eggsOne of the best

Pros: They're comfortable
Mic is retractable
Software is very nice and easy
Switch on the cord controls pc volume, makes it easier to adjust volume VS. other headphones
USB
I cannot stress how comfortable these are! Seriously!
No interference from being wireless

Cons: They're corded

Other Thoughts: For the price, I would definitely look at picking these up, they're worth it, and I don't think you'll regret it. The way you can customize the sound guarantees a unique experience, and the comfort factor that these provide is exceptional. They ensure long gaming hours, especially around 2-7am, while your wife and child lay in bed you can mercilessly game, kill some "noobs" and remember that you have a 2000 word essay due the next day. These headphones are great! Buy them. Now.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Headphones for the price

Pros: The headphones are comfortable due to the fact that they go over the ears instead of resting on the ears. The sound quality is good, but make sure you download the G. skill software from their webpage so that you can enable the 7.1 surround sound (which will make the quality of sound much better). The microphone was said to be not great, but i found with the right tweaking in settings and G. skill it sounds much better than my previous logitech HD cam mic. The cord is plenty long to reach any PC (unless you are playing 10 feet away). In games the surround sound works well at listening to footsteps and locating noises.

Cons: Sound quality isn't great until you download the G. skill software. I wish the cord was braided, but that's not a big deal. Everything else is good.

Other Thoughts: The volume control on the headphones is a bit big, but its nice to have the mic mute button and volume controls handy. I would recommend these headphones for the price.

3 out of 5 eggsQuality, good and bad

Pros: I have been using this headset on and off for about a month and a half – some for music, a little gaming, and then just a little bit of video chatting to verify functionality of the microphone.

One of the most notable features of these headphones is that the build quality seems quite nice for something that sells for this price. The foam cups on your ears are soft and comfortable, the glowing logo on the back of each side is a nice touch, and the retractable microphone is a plus (since I hardly use it). Everything on this unit feels like it is considerably higher quality than its price or brand name might suggest. Think of it like a fancy Hyundai: you don’t expect it to be as nice as a Mercedes, but it is actually pretty good.

Running Windows 10, my PC immediately installed a generic driver for them and after a second, I was able to switch my audio output from HDMI to the headphones. Fortunately, the cord is nice and long so I was able to plug it into the back of my tower on the floor and still sit comfortably. Speaking of which, the cord also feels heavy and more durable than your average headphones.

Another favorite of mine was the large in-line volume controls. They are easy to find and glow a nice soft blue so that you can see them without having to blindly feel. There is a mute button on the side, as well. It hangs down far enough that it isn’t right next to your face, but it’s still close enough to find consistently. More notes on volume below…

Cons: Though I did not initially use the software (just plugged into Windows and got going), I didn’t find these to be particularly loud. Maybe I’m spoiled, but they just didn’t blow me away with their loudness or even their sound quality. I am by no means an audiophile, but I have Bluetooth headphones that seem to provide more clarity and bass than these. I did spend a little time with the equalizer and was able to make them sound better, but I still wasn’t blown away by them. Not to mention, somehow the volume adjustment from 0-10 covers about 95% of the loudness – any setting above 10 up to 100 hardly gets noticeably louder. This seems obscure, but I confirmed this problem on both Windows 7 and Windows 10 on the same machine.

My other big nitpick is that even with them pressed securely on someone’s head, there is a LOT of sound still emanating into the room. I get that these aren’t the kind of headphones you’re going to be plugging into your phone in public, but I was quite surprised at the amount of sound coming out of the back of the headphones. You could almost leave them laying on the desk and just listen to them that way.

Other Thoughts: After reading through some of the other reviews here, there seems to be a huge quality disparity between what some users are seeing. Some reviews rant and rave about the absolute high quality of them, others (like me) are nonplussed, to say the least. G.Skill isn’t a new company; I’ve been using their RAM for years and have never had a problem. Not sure if there are actually variations in what we are seeing or if people just have different opinions. I even gave these the benefit of the doubt and used them for many hours, hoping to achieve a little break in on the drivers to improve sound quality and clarity. Alas, I can’t say I noticed a difference after ~20 hours of listening.

Some of the initial reviews claimed the mic was quiet and of poor quality; I used it for a few video calls just to get an idea of how it works. And that’s basically it: it works. It wasn’t particularly loud or quiet, and the sound quality wasn’t anything spectacular. It just worked.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Dean

Glad to hear you think the build quality is better than what the price suggests. This was a top priority as we feel an item like this should last many years of extensive use. By offering a comfortable wearing head set, we expect users to forget they are wearing a head set during long hours of movies or gaming. As you can see in the cord, it is not an average gauge that may tear over time.

For optimal sound quality, download the latest software and driver for this head set. [Link below] Check back for updates as revisions are continuously made to enhance functionality. The dual sound driver system in each ear will produce a clear Dolby Digital 7.1 surround sound. For even more intense sound, consider the RIPJAWS SR910 Gaming headset with 5 neodymium drivers in each ear to produce a sound unmatched by any other. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely KICK B U T T !!!

Pros: -The first thing I noticed was the weight of the box when I them, yet the headphones themselves are not too heavy that they take any toll on your head when it comes to weight. They also are weight-wise; not too heavy on the bottom, or the top to where MOST headphones will slip off if you care chugging a can of Coke. You literally can bend over and tie your shoes without the headphones slipping off.
.
-The size of the was the FIRST thing I noticed; NICE and big, thus helping to spread out the pressure of the "clamping arch" (the thing that goes over your head and connects the 2 ear pieces) resulting in a VERY comfortable fit that made me literally say , "Oh my ... THESE are freaking COMFORTABLE!"
.
-The ear cup pads are so soft they right to your head/face perfectly. And they are thick enough you do NOT feel ANY of the hard parts of the headphones touch you in ANY way from say being clamped too hard to your head.
.
-The clamping arch seems as if there is a flat spring-metal constructed into it (don't know).
.
-Where the clamping arch attaches to the themselves is a VERY nice aluminum "brad" the size of an American nickle thus again showing off the quality of that has gone into the G.SKILL 710.
.
-Something that is NOT shown in the pictures (and was to ME a REALLY cool bonus) was that when you plug in the G.SKILL 710's, on the outside of the is a flat smooth housing that when plugged in illuminates the red G-Skill logo behind the dark smoke tinted housing. It looks SUPER cool man!!! Just informing about this aesthetic feature almost make me want to warn readers with a "spoiler alert" . It was just too cool.
.
-Also the nice big American Quarter sized +/- volume buttons on the cable are blue instead of red. Now I know G-Skill's traditional colors are red for their logo, but when you're in the dark, red doesn't as quickly show up to the human eye, but the blue is nice and vibrant but yet not overwhelming; again more signs of quality and craftsmanship from actual USERS of the headphones, not just from some drawing board that "looks cool."
.
- connector. It doesn't get any easier than this folks.
.
-Black, Black and black. Perfect. I did notice G-Skill makes another headset that has red highlights too. This would be KILLER for a red themed system. They do cost more than these do however.
.
-Nice cable that comes with a nicely attached tie to wrap up the excess unused cabling.
.
-The best headphones I have ever seen or ever used. And for the , you will NOT get any better headphone out there; even if you spend $300 (which is pure insanity) for a set of headphones. If I could give these headphones 10 eggs I would emphatically do it!!!
.
.

Cons: -NOTHING !!! Not a darned thing !!!
.
.

Other Thoughts: -Just because this is a review, please don’t take my words lightly and think I just favor a product because it is sent to me. I have a job to do; and that’s to be fair and honest about the product for future prospective buyers. I am just like you, a customer, and to me reviews are golden. So I am not about to tarnish reviews OR my good name by telling you something is good when it is not.
.
-I have been through a DOZEN sets of headsets between my wife and I in the past year and a half and NOTHING can even come CLOSE to this set of headphones.
.
-To be known as a manufacturer of superb quality memory modules (RAM), G-Skill really pulled out all the stops and has produced a VERY high quality set of gaming headphones that in my opinion, can't even be TOUCHED as far as quality, durability, COMFORT, aesthetics and function. Hands down some of the best feeling and sounding headphones I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Some of the headphones I have done reviews on are: Corsair HS40, , H Wireless Headset, Siberia v3 Headset, and several budget headphones including RH-001 Headset and -556 Headset; both of which were headphones for the . But the G.SKILL 710 are something that MUST be heard to understand.
.
-I first used them on some 320k MP3's and was VERY impressed with the bass, and highs. For the FIRST time I can honestly say it actually SOUNDS like there are 3 speakers in each ear cup. On one song I checked out I could clearly hear a clapping in the left rear speaker while the high-hat fro the drums were in the right front of the right ear cup. I was VERY impressed at how clear and distinguishable specific instruments were in music. Next I put them to the test with Fallout 4. Nice mid tones for voice, crisp clean highs for electrical sounds, and VERY good powerful bass on gun firing sounds. The guns were as loud as they should be and NO muffled or muddy, EVEN WHEN other characters would speak during gunfire. I was standing next to a gas powered in Fallout 4 and slowly turned in a 360 degree turn and I could literally hear the sound rotate around my head when I turned. I just cannot say enough at how impressed I am with a set of headphones!!! KILLER wicked.

5 out of 5 eggsWhy pay more?

Pros: I tried and reviewed the more expensive SR910 headphones and I must ask... Why pay more? These headphones sound just as good as they do! I really like these ones better because they are more simple! The inline box is a simple volume up and volume down with a mute button on the side. (Which flashes between the colors as to answer your wondering question as to why you don't have sound!)

Like the SR910 headphones, a bit of tweaking the equalizer will yield perfection. I selected from the settings; room and soft rock. and worked with it from there. There are a lot less choices to choose from with these over the SR910, but that is perfect for me! Maybe because I've played with the SR910 ones first, these didn't seem at all intimidating! But they look, feel, and sound just as great! I did have a bit of trouble getting these going at first, probably because I never uninstalled the SR910 drivers and software? What worked in the end was right clicking the speaker icon and going into my playback devices. That let me enable them.

Just like the other ones, the cord was plenty long enough, they look fantastic and I still enjoy the red light on the cans. They are still comfortable even after watching a movie. The cans themselves twist enough to lay flat on your desk. The headband is nice even if you are wearing a cap. Probably wouldn't work out well with a cowboy hat or other such headwear! The software looks just as nice and fits the same theme as the headphones. A great experience, but again, that may be because I found the SR910 ones to be so complicated. That experience may have helped me fly right through setup on these and appreciate the great sound they offer!

Unlike the last pair, the control box was much easier to get out of the package on this round!

Cons: Just like the last headphones, the presets could use some improvement. They will sound great with some tweaking. They are also still limited to your computer where many consumers would want them to also work on their gaming systems.

While I'm not so sure it is a con, it was a bit disturbing the 'underwater' feeling you sometimes felt with the headphones on. The seal keeps a great deal of outside noise out. That is good, but the pressurized feeling wasn't. It wasn't causing any discomfort, just concern more than anything else. I felt the need to start chewing some gum.

Other Thoughts: Trying to review something that is almost identical to something else you've reviewed without repeating yourself is more challenging than I thought it would be! If anyone is trying to make a choice between the two, I'd recommend getting both and trying them both. (Keep the one you like best) Give the second set as a great gift or as a backup. Some folks will like the simplicity, some people will like more options. I was all about having options even if I never used them or didn't really need them. It was nice knowing they were there in case I ever changed my mind! I don't know if it's that I'm older now, or just lazy. I rather take the path of least resistance!

They should market their headphones as Easy and Expert in my opinion!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Headset

Pros: The new G.Skill SV710 Virtual headsets are a great leap forward in sound and control. They offer surround sound better than other headsets I own. With a USB 2 or 3 connection, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, super comfortable ear pads and a “desktop” in-line remote including very nice audio software suite rounds out an exceptional buy.

The headset themselves are very large, lighter than they look, but adjust very comfortably to my head and ears. They are not tight around the ears and allowed me several hours of listening without any issues. The cord is about 10 feet long so you have plenty of options if your PC is not close by to your chair. Nice lighted ear cups display the G.Skill logo as well. The desktop remote volume buttons light up when powered and makes it easy to adjust the volume in the dark.

The software suite really gives you great control over anything you are listening to. The latest version of the software and drivers are available directly from the gskill.com site. Be sure to download the setup guide and it provides good directions. The equalizer works very well and includes 10 bands of frequency adjustments. You can also select from 3 sound settings including Stereo, Dolby, and Virtual 7.1. I like the Virtual 7.1 setting because it allows tweaking the position and distances to give you the best sound for your music and games. The sound is very good overall.

Cons: If your head is small these may not fit comfortably. As I said they are very large and could cause some fit issues.

Other Thoughts: I enjoy these very much. For me, a great fit and very comfortable. The sound can be adjusted to your liking. An excellent buy.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat headphones for the price

Cons: Mic is quiet

3 out of 5 eggsOk headset but issues

Pros: - Sound is good quality, I can’t tell the difference going against the SoundBlaster ZxR.
- Sound Quality goes to 24-bit, 96k Hz.
- Good closure around the ears. Can hear very little from the room around you.
- Cords are long and of good quality.
- Headset is very strong and obviously made of good quality. Fits around head well with the elastic band.
- 7.1 Can tell the different angles using 7.1 sound
- Very loud, have to lower it down.
- Software easy to use with three main settings, Stereo, Dolby & Virtual 7.1. Equalizer has several saved defaults.

Cons: - No CD, have to download software from their website
- No easy way to switch between normal speakers and headset
- Software has no way to close it without the needs to right click and select close (someone forget the standard X on the top right)
- Microphone only records 16-bit, 48k Hz
- Microphone seems to be colliding with SoundBlaster ZxR. I was only able to get it to work a short while and the quality was horrible.

Other Thoughts: - Biggest hurdle is the ability to flip between sound devices.

Hi David

Glad to hear you like the sound quality and fitment of the RIPJAWS SV710 Gaming Headset. Considering the headset may be used for many hours at a time, the special design provides long term comfort and durability. Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound can bring movies and games to life for a real virtual experience.

For the driver software, we ask users to visit the Official G.Skill Downloads page. There you will find the latest version and install it once, rather than installing an older version from a CD then possibly find out there is a newer version to download. This ensures every new user will have the latest software. Thank you for your feedback, we will take note and implement any improvements in future revisions. You can find it in the link below. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

2 out of 5 eggsLow-end Set Sold for Middle-High End Prices

Pros: + Very comfortable and cool feeling design. Heat doesn't build up too fast and the ear cups are on the larger size but not too large. They don't squeeze your head like it's in a vise, either. A touch almost too heavy feeling, though. Overall this set should accommodate average to medium sized heads without worry but might be pushing it on larger heads or ears.

+ Great, physical build quality. The materials used are sturdy and the design is smart. Dropped them several times from 6 feet high onto wood and tile floors. Nary a rub or chip on the set, though I wouldn't suggest doing this since plastic is plastic. But they should handle the occasional accidental drop while sitting for sure.

+ Long USB cord.

+ Retractable mic is wonderful in principle. I hate having booms in my way, even when put to the side, and detachable mics can be annoying in their own right.

+ Customer service responds within 24 hours to questions.

Cons: - Very flat sounding, hollow even, no matter the settings, mode, equalizer. Terrible range, almost no image projection, doesn't do highs or lows good and virtually no bass. These aren't good for music, games or movies. I'd say they sound one half step better than a 20 buck set, if that.

- Loud isn't better. I'll admit this headset can get LOUD without distortion but loud is not bass and loud is not good for a headset. No matter the settings it just projects loudness across all channels not allowing for clarity or substance.

- 7.1 is pretty terrible. We all know that surround sound in a headset is a gimmick at best, even with independent drivers. But this headset takes the cake against them altogether. No matter the setting I never got consistent surround sounding sound. It's 100% useless for movies even with properly configured players. And with gaming, be it a CoD shooter, adventure game, or horror game sound positioning is spotty at best and useless most of the time due to balancing issues this set seems to have. Other "gamer" headsets just do it better.

- In-line controls are in a bit of an awkward position. They don't hang from your head, which is good, but there's also enough slack left that you need to worry about the rest of the cord and the controls themselves seem obnoxiously large and the LEDs are brighter than the ones on the ear cups. I basically hate this design. If you're a USB headset take advantage of it and put the controls on an ear cup.

- G.Skill software is virtually useless. It doesn't remember last settings upon restarts. So if you want Dolby or "7.1" you have to open the program every time you start windows and redo your settings. It also likes to crash occasionally which can be fun when your headset blurts out garbage at higher than set volumes upon the crash. You also have to configure windows manually to 7.1 surround if you want these to even have a chance at coming close to sounding surround. Other headsets take care of that for you or don't require it at all.

- Documentation is laughably terrible and useless. The real user manual is one you have to download and it isn't helpful in the least. Honestly, I don't know why they're wasting money printing what they did. I didn't even know there was a mute button on the controls until I emailed G.Skill to ask why the LEDs were blinking red and blue.

- There may be long term durability problems with the retractable mic. It sure doesn't like to retract sometimes and it always sounds rather rough, semi-resistant when putting it back. Other times it may slide in/out perfectly though.

- Like others, people hate me when I use this headset's mic. No matter the settings the position it's in. At best it's just ok but definitely needs a lot of work.

- Windows only. I couldn't get these to work on Mac or Linux reliably, let alone the fact that they don't have a driver/program for those OS' anyway

Other Thoughts: I'm not an audio snob or "phile". My ears can't pick up nuances that other audiophiles can but I will admit to being somewhat picky and critical of cheap sounding units or overly bassy setups. I can tell the difference from a cheap setup, to average to good, but perhaps not from excellent to amazing. So, I guess that puts me in the "discerning" camp.

But honestly, I can't even see bass hounds or "gamers" liking these from a sound perspective. They don't deliver on any audio signature front, truly flat in every area. They don't sound bassy let along too bassy that most "gamers" like and the surround provided with these don't help, and they certainly don't do the mid to high range well from music or just decent general sounds.

Not to get too ranty but I really hate USB headsets that sound worse than analog headsets let alone ones that are usb amped. If you're using USB you'd think you can use that extra power for more than just LEDs and generic loudness. Let alone on the software side. So instead of taking advantage of USB we have a headset that is limited to not only USB but windows only USB to boot.

I am rather disappointed with these, to say the least. Even disregarding the ridiculous price for sound quality at hand, I wouldn't even want these for free, sadly. Which is why I did drop tests on them. They look and feel great, they really have a nice build quality and this got me really excited at first. But it seems according to G.Skill the windows drivers are terrible because that's why these sound terrible or inconsistent to most. I don't think an update is going to magically make the actual speaker drivers sound good. They sound like bottom dollar parts. If these sounded at least as good as the Gamecom 780, which are cheaper but feel horrible on your head, I would have been truly satisfied and even amazed. But nope, these fall terribly short on sound in every single aspect.

I always feel awkward or guilty for giving a bad rating to something I got free but if I paid for these - let alone at this price-...I'd be upset to say the least so a review must always be fair and true. I will keep an eye out for driver updates and if these do somehow change in sound I'll be sure to update my review.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Matthew

Glad to hear the RIPJAWS SV710 Gaming Headset is a comfortable and cool for your demands. We understand users can have these on for hours at a time so the design is specifically for that purpose. This is certified Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound so expect software updates to enhance sound by fine tuning drivers and having sound profiles for optimal results. We will continue to make adjustments to improve user interface and maximize capabilities of this headset. Visit the official G.Skill Download page for up-to-date information. [link below]

2 out of 5 eggsSo-so quality with one huge defect

Pros: The headphones arrived in very thick, safe packaging which is especially important for headphones. The connections felt solid and sturdy and the headphones' structure did as well.

The driver loaded within 10 seconds of plugging the device in and it set itself as the default output device automatically. So basically I plugged them in and they worked.

The audio quality is not so great. They beat bottom end headphones but they're far from the quality of my two other pairs that are in a similar price range. The bass tones were there and a steady volume across the spectrum but they were a little too low in my opinion. I turned on the “bass boost” enhancement that is provided to almost all audio devices in Windows and it sounded much better. The initial lack of bass is surprising given the USB power available to help produce low end frequencies. The mid tones were represented well and were clear and appropriately leveled. The mid-high tones like guitar and piano notes were mushy, slightly distorted, and sounded a bit low quality not to mention leveled too high compared to the other frequencies. The highest frequencies like 10KHz on up were very clear and sounded great. Overall I'd say the audio quality was moderate but noticeably imperfect and at times mushy and badly balanced or distorted. Keep in mind I've worked in a professional audio editing, mobile DJing, and concert and theater sound production though.

The microphone was very impressive. I loved the slide-in feature. It wasn't professional quality but it and not quite passable for use in basic narrations and voiceovers like for online video sites. It was a little midrange heavy and didn't pick up bass or high frequencies well at all so you end up sounding nasaly and mushy. Other players in an online game or video chat would easily understand every word you say though. For fun I tried recording vocals for a music track and it sounded so unbelievably bad, there aren't even words for it but that's to be expected. Headsets never record sufficient quality for singing.

There was zero background noise whatsoever unless I put the input sensitivity past 85% in my recording program. Unfortunately that means that without dimming the sensitivity, the mic sends static, but it's not normal to record at 100% with any microphone. The mic picked up a little bit of air noise while placed directly in front of my mouth but retracting it slightly fixed that completely. It's the best you can ask for without a full wind screen.

Cons: These headphones are extremely loud compared to the average level achieved by analog ones that plug into the audio ports. This is likely due to the USB power amplification. I had to listen to most music at 2-5% volume. At 10% volume I would estimate the SPL inside the nearly airtight chamber around my ear at 105-110 decibels. I didn't try it at a higher level because it would likely damage my USB port from power draw or the headphones themselves. That is such an unbelievably unacceptable defect, I had to take off a lot of eggs in the rating. I was going to call them passable quality overall but in need of slight improvements but this knocked it down to completely unusable status.

To make things worse, under “custom” in the Speakers Properties window accessible via the Sounds option in the Windows 7 start menu, there is only one feature and it is simply titled “loudness.” Turning it on makes the output EVEN LOUDER!

To make matters worse, instead of an inline variable resistance device like on analog headphones, the volume up/down control in the cable simply signals the volume to raise or lower in Windows. Also, my system thought they were Speakers after loading the default driver from Microsof'ts Windows Update servers. The levels are so outrageously wrong, the headphones are almost unusable. Since it loads as an entire audio device, any advanced features in your sound card driver to redefine the device type of override the levels won't work.

In my recording program, the Gskill audio device registered a SPDIF, Line in, and Microphone source as being valid and available. Obviously it only has a microphone. Once I configure it to target the correct “device” I was pretty happy with the quality.

These headphones claim to virtualize 7.1 surround sound but in fact the sound configuration options in Windows state that the device is only capable of stereo surround and no other options are available except the default surround virtualization that uses matrixing which any audio device can use.

Other Thoughts: As a pro and a con, the cable leading to the headphones is extremely thick and heavy. This makes it resist damage but you can certainly feel it pulling your head to one side.

My super short summary of these headphones is that they are imperfect, the sound levels will blow your head off, and I can't get past the fact that there are much better headphones out there in the same price range. I don't think these are a good choice until a few problems are solved.

Note: Gskill has stated that frequency leveling may be smoothed out in future driver updates. I am using the Microsoft July 12, 2013 driver version 6.1.7601.18202 for this test, which is a sort of generic audio device driver but I couldn't find any alternatives.
