1 out of 5 eggsNot a fan

Pros: Price

Cons: Didn't even come in a box, it was bubble wrapped and placed in a large box with the rest of my order, came with no driver software and reads mosts discs as data files instead of movies. It installed my OS fine but did not play any movies and I ended up buying an additional player.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks good

Pros: Low cost. Comes region free. I got 3 of these drives only one came with power dvd bd 10.

Power bd 10 is great very responsive and fast.

Cons: Only some come with power dvd 10 bd. Doesnt burn ANYTHING lol. Reads everything.

Other Thoughts: This drive seems to not be for beginners, needs firmware update. Software can be unresponsive. If this is your first time getting a blu ray drive go for an LG. Nero blu ray player works just fine with this.

2 out of 5 eggsIt's junk

Pros: Inexpensive, plays DVDs/CDs

Cons: Won't play blu-ray! I've spent a couple of hours trying tips and tricks, downloading software, etc. Nodda. It should have been blu-ray ready out of the box. Not happy at all with this unit.

Other Thoughts: Aren't there laws to prevent stuff like this?

4 out of 5 eggs**UPDATE IT**

Pros: Easy to use and cheap

Cons: Needed a firmware update before it was fully functional

Other Thoughts: To all the people who are complaining about it being choppy or laggy when trying to play their movies, update the firmware. Mine did the same thing, but after a little research, other people were experiencing the same thing and later directed to their site where an update was available. Google "liteon ihos104 blu-ray", click on the link that takes you to their site, click on the "Firmware" tab, and download the program "SmartPack." Once installed it'll update your drive's firmware and all will be in working order!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Performance and Price

Pros: Price and quality. Plays all Blu-rays and other discs properly. Burns DVDs quickly with no probs. I have PowerDVD 11 and 12 on various computers and this unit plays Blu rays with both those software products flawlessly. Also burns Blu-ray to DVD well. And of course the biggest pro is NewEgg customer service, absolutely unbeatable.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Didn't bother inserting install disc - was unnecessary, Win 7x64 Ultimate handled installation smoothly and I already have Blu-ray player software as mentioned previously. The disc does however contain firmware update for Win 8 compatibility so don't just throw it out if you have 8, but then again if don't have Win 8, then when/if you switch to Win 8 you can download it anyway so I did just throw it out lol, less clutter....oh and did I mention NewEgg customer service is ridiculously good?

5 out of 5 eggsNeed Blu Ray? Get this.

Pros: Why pay double or triple this price for Blu-Ray? If you need to playback blu-ray get this and VLC and you are set. You need to add a few extras to VLC to get it work but it does.

Cons: As everyone has said, it doesn't come with software (that's why it's OEM and cheap!) Use VLC if you won't to pay for BR player software.

http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name - go here once you have VLC installed.

Other Thoughts: I loathe the bundled cripplware that comes with optical drives so this is the ideal solution - cheaper drive, no software. If don't want to mess with VLC then look at WinDVD. In the end, you'll likely tire of the bundled crippleware with the other drives anyways.

5 out of 5 eggsReads most CDs and DVDs

Pros: Reads most CDs and DVDs at a decent speed. While it's not really fast, I can't complain at this price.

I installed Windows 8 from this drive with no issues. Other reviewers must be using an old motherboard.

Cons: I've been able to read both stamped and burned discs, except one Verbatim DVD-R burned by a colleague. Another DVD-ROM drive did read that disc. I tried updating the firmware, which did not fix it.

The firmware updater must be installed. There is no uninstaller so plan on additional bloat in the Windows Registry. Why you can't download and run the .exe file directly, I don't know.

Other Thoughts: Windows 8 [Pro] doesn't include DVD or Blu-ray decoders out of the box. I believe you have to purchase the Windows Media Center add-on from Microsoft for that. Other reviewers deduct eggs for that, but it's not Lite-On's fault!

I highly recommend this Blu-ray reader for business builds because future software may be released on Blu-ray if it's over 9 GB.
