So far.. so good
- Pros: Worked right out of the box. Quiet. Looks good.
- Cons: Wish I would have known that Windows 7 doesn't play Blu-Rays unless you buy $60+ software.
- Other Thoughts: Using it to play Blu-Rays on a 40" HDTV which is hooked up to my PC via an HDMI cable. You don't know what you've been missing until you've seen actual 1080p. All I can say is... WOW!!!!
Works
- Pros: Relatively cheap, comes with software that plays blu-ray (PDVD 8), SATA cable and mounting screws included, simple install (was up and running in 5 minutes). Blu ray plays and looks just fine.
- Cons: Power DVD - although it works, it seems quite clunky. I am running on a fresh install of windows XP pro on a new HTPC system (Sempron 140, Gigabyte 785 US2H, 500G HDD, 4GB ddr2800). Other reviewers indicated that it will not run on XP. My copy runs, but it seems to freeze when I start it up (takes about 60 seconds to play either a DVD or Bluray once I start the software). You might have to wait for it, but it will work. Just make sure XP is fully updated and the powerDVD patch is downloaded.
Also, be aware that the "BD advisor" that comes with the software (the app that assesses whether your system is capable of blu-ray play) is not current. My mobo is spec'd to play 1080P but the advisor tells me for some reason that there is a problem (when there is not). However, I have not yet experienced a problem. And yes, I have downloaded the latest patches.
The drive is worth the price of admission alone, and the software does work, so the product still gets full marks from me.
- Other Thoughts: I have noted some reviewers who have experienced minor stuttering. Prior to purchasing this drive, I was using a standard DVD player and set my resolution to 720 (to match my 720 tv). I experienced no issues (no stuttering, nothing) playing DVD's or streaming netflix over the internet.
When I purchased this drive Power DVD refused to play on 720 and forced me to use 768 for my display resolution. Once I changed to 768 I began to experience minor stuttering (very minor but still there) on DVD, Blu-ray and streaming netflix. I suspect that the TV doesn't like the non-native resolution and thus I am not sure that this is a software problem.
I blame PowerDVD for not playing in 720, but it's likely my TV that is balking at 768. Hope this helps others. Good luck.

Included Software does not support some movies
- Pros: Fast Drive and has included BD Software
- Cons: The included cyberlink player does not support some movies. Newer versions of Power DVD are patched, but the OEM version has not been patched. Cyberlink customer support was unable to provide a date when support for the movie would be available.
Comes with Software - Working Blueray
- Pros: It comes with PowerDVD. The software worked with Windows 7. Plays Bluerays succesfuly.
- Cons: Had trouble with initial install of the drive. Had to Change SATA settings in BIOS from IDE mode to AHCI. When this setting changes, windows won't load anymore. This was a newbuild so I reinstalled Windows 7, but the system repair Wizard may have been able to correct this.
- Other Thoughts: Other reviews seemed to indicate that the PowerDVD software included wouldn't work with Win7. I had no problems running it in Win 7. (Haven't used much, but had a successful playback on analog video/audio)
Useless
- Pros: Umm, the tray opens? You can use it as a cup holder? Oh, serious pros? Well then zero, zilch, none, period!
- Cons: Won't read the second layer of double layer bluray discs, which is pretty much everything out there. That is when it works mind you. The first one stopped working 2-3 weeks in so I exchanged it for the same model. The second one stopped working the day after I installed it. Now I'm stuck with a paperweight since the RMA period expired.
Avoid like grim death!
- Other Thoughts: This is an overpriced DVD drive since it can't actually read bluray discs in any meaningful way. Want to watch a movie on your PC? Look elsewhere.
