5 out of 5 eggsTERRIBLE SOFTWARE

Pros: The drive is lovely.

Cons: CYBERLINK IS A MISERABLE COMPANY AND THE SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH THIS DRIVE IS A SCAM

Other Thoughts: Too bad the software sucks. Seriously- where is the freeware for blu-ray?

5 out of 5 eggsThree years and still kicking

Pros: Originally bought this as a backup optical drive, especially given the Blu-ray capabilities. Granted I didn't use the Blu-ray functionality until the open-source VLC player supported Blu-ray about two years later -- ever since that point this drive gets used for Blu-ray playback. I'm currently running Windows 8 and all is well.

Another plus for this drive is that CD ripping is very accurate (it is a Lite-on drive, after all). I still use it as my primary optical drive for ripping my audio CD's. And the SATA interface means that, three years later, it's not even an obsolete connector yet. Well worth the $45 I had spent on it, back in late 2009.

Cons: It doesn't make me coffee? I can't think of anything, really.

5 out of 5 eggsStill works.

Pros: Over two years and it still works, so that's a plus.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: It's rough to try and watch Blu-Rays on a PC as there is no great support for them. Not the drive's fault, though.

4 out of 5 eggsGood deal

Pros: Got on the cheap a few years ago during black Friday sale.

Cons: Had a skipping issue, would happen every few minutes, tested with multiple playback software.

However I managed to find a firmware flash on the web (version WL0D) which resolved the issue. Mine came with WL0B. Unfortunately the manufacturers website did not have this for download. Writing this for anyone who happens to have the same problem.

2 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Doesn't play some movies, freezes

Other Thoughts: This is a discontinued item, but if you come across one, I would avoid it. It always was quirky and now it is almost useless. It won't play the latest movies, such as Kung-Fu Panta 2. This is after installing all the latest software and firmware updates and spending hours on web forums. In the end, folks only achieved success when they replaced the player. That is probably why it was cheap to begin with, they were unloading them, knowing its limitations.

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't play some movies

Pros: Normally works fine, image and audio quality are good.

Cons: Comes with cruddy and extremely outdated PDVD 8. Doesn't play all Blu-Rays - freezes the computer when I put in Lord of War and doesn't read Children of Men at all. Sometimes the drive stops showing up in Windows and I have to restart the computer

Other Thoughts: It really sucks to buy a movie and find out you can't watch it because you have a substandard player. It also sucks to put in a disc, realize Windows isn't detecting the drive, and then have to waste five minutes restarting the computer. I've never had this problem with my DVD drive

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of junk

Pros: none

Cons: This is my first bad pc part from Newegg, that being said this is a piece of junk. It started making noise in less than a month after owning it and now blueray disc's no longer play. DVD's play fine so i'm assuming there's an issue with just the one laser. I schould've returned it when i had the chance. Don't buy this unit.

Other Thoughts: Newegg still rocks!

Pros: Blu ray
Cheap
Black and white tray covers
sata interface
.... cheap...

Cons: I don't use bluray much, being I only own 2 blu ray movies... but when I did use a NEW movie in it, I noticed SOME!!!!!! skipping and it froze on me, Slow read times on normal DVD's... really, though for what it is and the price, I can't complain to much.

Other Thoughts: Gonna buy a sony later on...

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet

Pros: This drive is quiet. Nice for my HTPC build. Works out of the box, no driver installation required.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: This drive is a reader only, it does not burn ANY types of discs. Not a con - just a heads up.

2 out of 5 eggsDead after 6 months

Pros: For the period of time that it worked, it worked with only a few hiccups. At the time of purchase, it was the best deal on NewEgg. It came bundled with PowerDVD 8, so there was software to watch movies right out of the box.

Cons: As the review title says, it died after 6 months. It just stopped working one morning and refused to turn on. Installation in another machine confirmed it was dead. The included version of PowerDVD 8 only allows for 2-channel stereo, so you need to pay for a software upgrade if you want 5.1/7.1 surround sound.

Other Thoughts: There are much better and faster drives now for the same/similar price. There is no need to order this model anymore unless NewEgg has a significant price drop
