5 out of 5 eggsGreat speeds, sturdy, lightweight

Pros: 1) Has a smooth, black finish on the part that sticks out of the case.
2) Has extremely fast speeds for a DVD/CD Drive.
3) Is relatively quiet when CD/DVD is in.
4) Has different size-fits for different sized CD/DVDs.
5) Mounting screws were wonderful - perfect fit, screwes went in easily, very lightweight and durable.

Cons: 1) During peak speeds, the disk inside will rev up and be a bit loud, but this is understandable, and not to mention it's only half as loud as my previous CD/DVD drive.

Other Thoughts: Came with an OEM version of Nero 10 - not sure how many uses it has before it runs out, but on the CD label claimed it lasted for 90 days, whereas when you install it, it claims to last "Unlimited." I also have no idea what it considers to be a "New Computer," so this worries me.

The Nero 10 CD also came with "SecureErase," but is not under the OEM serial code; thus, I can install it as many times as I want. It only required 3 mb to install and works gloriously. What it does is allows you to clean your CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, and probably others, so that you can reuse them once again.

Overall, it's a quality product for a measly 25 bucks.

4 out of 5 eggsLite On DVD writer

Pros: Nice little SATA DVD writers, I purchased 2 for my computer, both work well.

Cons: The Nero 10 Software takes up a lot of hard drive space for the job it does. My suggestion is to use the older Nero 7 package that is far lighter. Especially if you are using an older computer. This is why the rating I give is short an egg.

Other Thoughts: Both DVDs are installed and working fine. Lite On products are good. Installed them in my old IDE board computer with a dual SATA adapter from Vantec, machine recognized them immediately with windows XP SP3.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, except for 1x, 2x

Pros: I purchased this drive two months ago. I use it primarily to create DVD-R video DVDs using Taiyo-Yuden (JVC) TY02 DVD-R media. I test my burns with another Liteon drive using the "DVD Speed" software. The burns are generally good, although not quite as good as my old Plextor drive (ah, the days when you could actually purchase a premium drive that had superior specifications).

Cons: My one problem is something that perhaps most people won't care about: this burner will not burn at 1x. Why does this matter? Well, I still have a large number of older DVD+RW discs that I use almost every day for making test burns of new videos before I burn multiple copies onto DVD-R media. Some of these discs can only be burned at 1x. Unfortunately this burner does not have a 1x option and so it burns this media at a faster speed. The problem is that this faster write strategy makes the discs unreadable and, with this burner, they cannot be recovered. Fortunately, I have an older burner that can do a full erase, at 1x, and bring the media back to life. For the time being, I have to use this older burner, located on a seldom-used PC, to do the burns on this older media.

For most people, this deficiency is not a deal breaker, and I have found a way around it, as long as my older burner continues to operate, but I thought I should mention it in case you have any older 1x and 2x media lying around: you may not be able to burn reliably with this burner. For 4x, 8x, and 16x DVDs, this burner works just fine.

5 out of 5 eggsOh how easy it has become

Pros: Fast, not too loud, media friendly, cheap.

Cons: Small buffer

Other Thoughts: Replaced my trusty pioneer dvdr from 6ish years ago. When my last batch of 16x TY's were burning at 4x and coastering left and right, I knew my pioneer and its 4 year old firmware was coming up short on todays disc compatibility. Funny enough when I last looked at DVRs, liteon was the manufacturer to stay far far away from. Now it seems like they are king of the hill, and a fine hill it has become.

Even on my pioneer, I needed to watch my disc record speeds, and being a 12x burner it could rarely actually do that. And it wasn't uncommon for 8x burns to read slower in some parts with high errors. So to say I was surprised when I popped in this lite on and began burning 12x disc left, right, and down would be an understatement. Even doing a test 16x burn w/ error graph, I have not coastered a disc yet. And varify's are always top speed so burn quality is clean.

Burning a dvd cannot get any more trouble free. And after spending top dollar on dvd drives for the past decade, the $26 price tag was a great surprise. The only issue I would have with the drive is its 1.5 megabyte buffer. This is LOWER then the 2 megabytes in my pioneer which was designed in 2005. Considering how the fast burn speeds would eat up 1.5 megs in no time and the cost of ram these days it is pretty inexcusable that this buffer should not be higher. So far no issues have risen though and ImgBurn says the buffer stays full as much as it did on my pioneer.
