Sony and NEC have combined their optical expertise in the joint venture, Optiarc. The result are the Optiarc DVD and CD drive series.

With write speeds as high as 20X for DVD+R and DVD-R, they may be the fastest IDE optical drives in the industry. Even at these speeds, there's no need to worry about buffer under-runs, with 2MB of memory buffering your data. Optiarc's technology adjusts itself automatically to the small variations in each drive and each disc as it writes, giving optimum performance time after time. (Crap discs will still give you crap results, but it will be the best it can be even then.) All the features you've come to expect in a modern DVD/CD burner: multiple media formats, inexpensive price, fast operation, and now backed by both Sony and NEC.

It's always your decision, but I wish I had a dead drive right now so I could replace it with one of these.

  • newegg DVD Multi Recorder The Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7200A-0B DVD burner enables users to burn any DVD+R/-R, DVD+RW/-RW or DVD-RAM disc and supports the dual-layer function allowing up to 8.5GB data to be burned and saved on a single dual-layer disc. Burn your own DVD/VCD movies or backup data with ease!
  • newegg 20X Ultra High Writing Speed The Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7200A-0B DVD burner delivers a class-leading DVD+R/-R writing speed of 20X. The super fast burning speed enables users to write a whole DVD+R/-R disc in only 5 and a half minutes!
  • newegg Stable Recording and Reading Quality The Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7200A-0B DVD burner adopts cutting-edge technologies of Sony and NEC such as Adaptive Self Tuning to optimize performance for each disc, PRML (Partial Response, Maximum Likelihood) for minimized data error, and Front-end Digitalization for enhanced stability, achieving consistent recording and reading quality for the best user experience.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA_POS

Pros: none that I can think of.
overall rating gets 1 rotten egg, but I'd actually not give it even a rotten egg, if possible.
glad to see it out of stock, and hope to never see another one.

Cons: I purchased this, but moved and got really busy, then installed it almost a year later. It will not read ANY CD or DVD of any flavor.
So much for Sony/Optifart.
I can't return it because of being way past 30 days, and out of warranty, too.
It was DOA and missing in action!

Other Thoughts: I replaced it with an LG DVD-R/W that never stops running.
I only order LG DVD-R/W units now, never Sony/Optifart again.

5 out of 5 eggsCEO

Pros: Works great, just like it should.

These New Drive are a bit shorter / Vs. the old Drives back in the day... i would say at lease 3 inches or more...

I installed it into a external (Bytech) USB Drive unit... Works great.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: None

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: The eject button worked.

Cons: After using it for over a year, it stopped playing DVDs. After checking into it a bit more I realized that it had switched, by itself, to Region 2 (I'm in Region 1)- not too big of a deal honestly, but the problem is it REFUSED to let me change regions. The weird part is I've never changed the region, and it still had a 3 count on region changes. Simply put, it became useless- even after a good flashing the problem persisted.

Other Thoughts: This is probably the most disappointing product I've ever put into my chassis, and I'll never purchase another Sony optical drive. A year is far too short of a life-span for any staple component. It had a SINGLE job and it failed at it.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly As Advertised

Pros: Works exactly as advertised. Does what it is supposed to do and does it well. Appears to be more solidly built than some other drives I've had. Truly silent reading/writing.

Cons: None. It's bare-bones - you get just the drive solidly packed in bubble wrap - but that's what you expect when you order an OEM product (and get a bargain in the process)

Other Thoughts: Would have been nice to include a piece of paper with the web address for the most recent driver.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter late than ...

Pros: Bought at typical Newegg low price with free shipping.
Works as a CD/ DVD reader on an older Dell system with Windows ME.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought this for a family member to replace a dead CD reader in their Dell computer.
Since it is an OEM part it came without any software so he isn't able to burn discs. If there is any burning suits for old Windows operating systems that is.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking fine.

Pros: I had this laying around for a while before I installed it in a computer I built with old parts to run Windows 7.
Quieter than my Lite-on Burners.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I haven't used it to burn a DVD or CD but it reads them fine.

5 out of 5 eggsNice burner

Pros: Reads quicker than my other burner which is rated equally for read rate. Burns well and recognizes medium without a hitch.

Cons: A little noisey but who really cares.

Other Thoughts: RPM- you can hear it accelerating to burning speed which I like since it allows me to monitor burning by sound.

2 out of 5 eggsNot so good.

Pros: -It turns on and the LED flashes green

Cons: -It is very finicky with my motherboard
-There are no online instructions on how to set the jumper (for this specific drive)
-It scratched my Vista OS disk
-It just doesn't work!!! Arrrrrgh :P

Other Thoughts: It also refuses to make breakfast and clean laundry, but that is hardly a con for an optical drive. But seriously though, I'm going to try to return this guy and buy a SATA DVD Burner instead... And replace a few other things... :(

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: None

Cons: After trying a different cable it finally worked, sort of. It wouldn't read from any DVD at all.

Other Thoughts: RMA process is nice, I just hate to pay the shipping cost
