Sony and NEC have combined their optical expertise in the joint venture, Optiarc. The result are the Optiarc DVD and CD drive series.
With write speeds as high as 20X for DVD+R and DVD-R, they may be the fastest IDE optical drives in the industry. Even at these speeds, there's no need to worry about buffer under-runs, with 2MB of memory buffering your data. Optiarc's technology adjusts itself automatically to the small variations in each drive and each disc as it writes, giving optimum performance time after time. (Crap discs will still give you crap results, but it will be the best it can be even then.) All the features you've come to expect in a modern DVD/CD burner: multiple media formats, inexpensive price, fast operation, and now backed by both Sony and NEC.
It's always your decision, but I wish I had a dead drive right now so I could replace it with one of these.

OUTSTANDING value!
- Pros: This drive is quiet, burns fast, and burns any media I have thrown at it.......doing all of this with a quality burn. I even had some cheap Ritek DVD+R DL that failed in my other burner all the time not only finish the burn, but play perfectly in my older DVD player. For the price you pay for this burner, you just cannot go wrong. Great to install on older systems too, since it is IDE
- Cons: Not much negative to say.........It doesn't have lightscribe, but for under $30 who cares?
- Other Thoughts: IF you are looking for an entry level DVD burner for your PC, get this one! You get WAY more than what you pay with this burner, as well as Newegg.
very quiet
- Pros: I've used Samsungs for a while - after NEC stopped making drives. This drive is way quieter than the Samsungs (202J, 202N).
- Cons: none yet
- Other Thoughts: Only gets 4 stars because I've just burned a couple of CDs. Had to comment on quietness, though. I don't even hear the drive unless I put my ear to the case when Nero is doing a data verify, which made the Samsung drives audible from my chair.

CEO
- Pros: Works great, just like it should.
These New Drive are a bit shorter / Vs. the old Drives back in the day... i would say at lease 3 inches or more...
I installed it into a external (Bytech) USB Drive unit... Works great.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: None
Garbage
- Pros: The eject button worked.
- Cons: After using it for over a year, it stopped playing DVDs. After checking into it a bit more I realized that it had switched, by itself, to Region 2 (I'm in Region 1)- not too big of a deal honestly, but the problem is it REFUSED to let me change regions. The weird part is I've never changed the region, and it still had a 3 count on region changes. Simply put, it became useless- even after a good flashing the problem persisted.
- Other Thoughts: This is probably the most disappointing product I've ever put into my chassis, and I'll never purchase another Sony optical drive. A year is far too short of a life-span for any staple component. It had a SINGLE job and it failed at it.
Exactly As Advertised
- Pros: Works exactly as advertised. Does what it is supposed to do and does it well. Appears to be more solidly built than some other drives I've had. Truly silent reading/writing.
- Cons: None. It's bare-bones - you get just the drive solidly packed in bubble wrap - but that's what you expect when you order an OEM product (and get a bargain in the process)
- Other Thoughts: Would have been nice to include a piece of paper with the web address for the most recent driver.
