5 out of 5 eggsDoes what it says!

Pros: Used almost every day since 12/11 and have had no issues with it.
Nice and slim for easy transport.
Good quality cables.

Cons: Have to use two USB but can't do anything about that

Other Thoughts: If you need a slim portable DVD drive buy it

5 out of 5 eggsSony USB dvd writer performed fine!

Pros: Drive worked on 11.6 inch gateway netbook with 3 USB slots. Burned music cd and Video DVD fine. Watched a movie DVD with correct program. Drive not noisy. Cables tuck neatly in slot underneath for transport. Windows XP automatically loaded driver after correctly naming device. Can quickly eject usb device and change to thumbdrives or ext hard disk drive.

Cons: The supplied limited version lets you burn cd-r but not DVD without upgrading. Also the DVD movie would not play without upgrading for codecs for video format of disk.

Other Thoughts: Arrived in 2 days from NJ to IL. Have had good luck with Newegg in years past and finally ordered from them again.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks, most of the time, but...

Pros: Small; decent price (when on sale; does a good job--when it works.

Cons: First: the cords are way too short. I use an 8-port USB hub; even that's a stretch for the 8" cables.
Two: the cords are not detachable, so you can't replace them; only use an extension.
Three: the drive works sometimes; sometimes it's not recognized by the computer. I have to disconnect, then reconnect the unit to get it back online. I use 2 other externals and they don't have that problem.
Four: Maybe the most annoying. The burner prevents the computer from sleeping; the computer goes off, then returns about 10 seconds later. The only way to avoid this is to reach behind the computer and disconnect the too-short cables out.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the Job

Pros: Nice, small form factor for use with a laptop that's too thin to have a drive. It's perfect for occasionally loading software or a quick burn of a data disk. Helps keep the accessory load my carrying case light.

Cons: The USB connectors are too short if your laptop has just two ports, and they're on opposite sides. You'll need some kind of short extension cable. Mine is part a combination hub/card reader.

Other Thoughts: Newegg made this an outstanding bargain with a sale price and a discount combined at $27 with free shipping. Sony is usually a little pricey, but not this time.

5 out of 5 eggsSony DRX-S90U Great Drive

Pros: -Works great on mac/pc
-Non-Glossy
-Great for watching DVDs (Movies)
-Every other feature which has already been stated.

Cons: None. Got exactly what I wanted.

Other Thoughts: I have an iMac with the slot load drive way up high. Not so useful when your office chair is down low. I got this device to do every thing I would do with my drive in my iMac. Playing movies, burning CDs, installing software, backing up data. It does this task flawlessly. Some might say it uses too many USB Ports... USB hubs are like 5 bucks at office depot. Yes it works with them I know cuz I am using one.

I did my research and Im glad I did this is one great drive.

5 out of 5 eggsSony Optiarc DRX-S90U

Pros: - USB cables tuck neatly underneath the drive
- no bulky AC adapter to power the drive - powered via USB
- lightweight
- non-glossy (doesn't attract fingerptints
- Reads CDs and DVDs, burns DVD+ at 8x

Cons: - both USB cables must be plugged in at the same time in order to use this, so 2 of your USB ports will be occupied.
- cables can be a bit of a pain to tuck back underneath

Other Thoughts: The description says this is a top load drive, but it's not. It's a slide out tray like most notebooks.

Overall, I like the drive. The fact that the cables are attached and tuck underneath were the biggest selling points for me. Design is nice - very minimal with Sony logo and near the front and media logos near the back right.

Although I find myself using optical media less and less, most of the software I own is still on CD or DVD, and my laptop is a slim 13" without a dvd drive. If you fall in this boat, this is a good purchase.
