4 out of 5 eggsGreat unit

Pros: Looks and works great.
So far they have recognized what ever I inserted, cd, dvd or bluray with no problems.
I've used cheaper drives that developed problems over a short time: doors not closing properly, strange noises, and failure to recognize a disk without having to reboot. After 13 months both units are still working fine.

Cons: pricey, but the high quality made it worthwhile.

Other Thoughts: The silver front looks better and classier then a plain black front.

5 out of 5 eggsMRX-550L v5

Pros: Works properly under Ubuntu Linux 13.06 64-bit.
Reads Music CDs, data CDs and movie DVDs perfectly under Linux
Brasero disk burning software works perfectly with this drive under Linux

Cons: NewEgg kindly shipped a 25-pack of Memorex LightScribe CDs with this unit. However this is a version 5 (v5) unit and it does not support LightScribe. No problem for me because that feature is not advertised on NewEgg's product page. However some other reviewers appear to be misinformed on this.

Other Thoughts: Satisfied.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks OK, nothing bad

Pros: No problems, so far, but I haven't tried LightScribe.

Cons: Spins slightly louder than the quietest DVD drives I've tried, but not really bad. Seek noise is average.

Other Thoughts: The version I received was made in July, 2009. It's a rebadged LiteOn model iHAS224 and accepted LiteOn's newest firmware, version ZL0P, date Nov. 2009. This is 2 revisions newer, but do not flash LiteOn firmware because doing so will definitely void the warranty and possibly turn the product into a brick.

Pros: SATA, looks good in case, does what it is supposed to

Other Thoughts: SATA is a PRO, not a CON.
