5 out of 5 eggsneat

Pros: NO TRAY! see first line in "Other Thoughts:" if you plan on using in anything except a laptop.

Cons: none. see first line in "Other Thoughts:" if you plan on using in anything except a laptop.

Other Thoughts: ***you need a 6pin sata adapter to use in a desktop box... BYTECC INC SATA-XP118 is a great cable for this*** This player/burner is awesome! mine is in a tower and had it about a year, and use it almost every day, and not one problem. you have to be careful when mounting using the side screws as the slightest bend or over torque can result in noise or trouble loading disc. mine loads nice, burns nice, and ejects nice. I've always loved slot load "disc" players over tray load. the only bad thing i see that could happen, with slot over a tray, is if the player fails with a disc in it, its stuck, but... if that's the case, not like you could use it anymore anyway. gotta take it out to replace it, so you are just adding an extra step of taking it apart to retrieve your disc. overall very nice item and nice price-point.

1 out of 5 eggsDied on the first power up

Pros: Pioneer makes fine optical drives in general.

Cons: But, not this one. Died on the first power up.

Other Thoughts: I'd still buy Pioneer, but this is RMAed right away.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Well

Pros: -It works
-Not too pricey
-Fast
-Don't have to wait for a tray to open
-Activity light is yellow/orange which matches my case's hdd activity light which is perfect.

Cons: Somewhat noisy on loading/unloading/seek, but not too bad and feels a little flimsy but its not like I am using it as an external drive so it doesn't matter to me.

Other Thoughts: Like others have stated, you need a slim sata to sata adapter. Thanks for the heads up on that one. Also the grinding noises, like others have stated could be the screws used OR the drive cage itself.
When I ran it the first time, it was outside the case because I will still waiting for mine. It ran flawlessly, but once I installed it, and ran a cd, it would not load the disk automatically so I kind of gave it a little push in and when it took it, the drive started to making grinding noises people have complained about and thought, well mine is messed up too. It turned out the there were 3 tabs pressing against the cage which in turn was pressing on the drive. After that, it works perfect.. Oh and you do have to use very small screws, luckily my case came with some. In Win http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811108227
Would buy again for other mini builds

5 out of 5 eggsWorked perfectly

Pros: Cheap slot loading DVD burner. Worked perfectly the first time.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Read other reviews and plan ahead. Using mounting screws that are too long WILL cause loading issues! Solution: Don't use screws (it's a laptop drive, so it probably wasn't designed to use them anyway) or get some shorter (really short) screws to mount it. Don't even try it with standard mounting screws.

Also, you need a slimline adapter if it's not going into a laptop. Don't get upset if you forget to order the proper cable and your project comes to a screeching halt.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Drive

Pros: I've been using this drive for a couple weeks now with no problems. Quiet, loads discs smoothly.

Cons: None... So far.

Other Thoughts: People with 'grinding' and other odd noises should look at their mounting hardware. This drive requires VERY small screws.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfect!

Pros: Got this to replace an OEM drive on my Aspire laptop. Fits perfectly. Love the slot load over the old school tray. It's faster than what I used to have and drivers installed over the internet automatically with absolutely no hassle.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: If I would have known how pleased I would be with the performance of this drive, I wouldn't have waited until the original to die before upgrading. Also as usual, Newegg's service was FLAWLESS. Did standard shipping and it arrived in about 4 days. I Love NEWEGG!

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect fit in Dell Studio 1735 laptop

Pros: It works. Tons of supported formats. Faster than my old TSST drive. Quiet operation (once the disc is loaded).

Cons: A bit noisy loading/unloading. Some slippage when loading.

Other Thoughts: I got this drive to replace the failed TSST drive that came with my Dell Studio 1735 laptop. It's half the price of the Dell replacement part. I ordered it not knowing whether it'd fit, but fortunately, it does. You have to remove the plastic bezel, of course. There's enough clearance between the drive and the edge of the case that the eject button (which isn't present on Dell's drive) isn't spoiled.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: I bought this drive to go in my new desktop build, it loads easily and seems well made for a slim drive. it's a shame there aren't more choices for slot load drives out there, but this one doesn't disappoint. also has a emergency eject hole, something some slim drives have lacked in the past.

Cons: needs short screws to mount drive from sides, otherwise they will interfere with disc loading mechanism

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: - Quiet operation
- Relatively inexpensive
- Relatively fast reads and writes

Cons: - Side mounting holes cause jamming issues *see "Other thoughts"
- Louder than other drives when loading/unloading discs

Other Thoughts: Being a laptop drive, I'm guessing they weren't expecting you to mount it using the holes along the sides of the drive. If you insert the screws too far, the disc feeding/ejection mechanism locks up. When mounting using the side holes, only insert the screws 1 - 2 full turns (basically, the thickness of the housing). Why they don't have a back-stop or something to prevent this is beyond me (probably because they assume you'll only use it in a laptop); but it worked fine after I backed out the screws.

Also, be aware that because this is a laptop drive, it comes with no data or power cords. You'll need to purchase cords that are compatible with the more compact data/power ports on the back of the drive. If you do a search for "slim sata" you should be able to find them.
