The Pioneer BDR-209DBK SATA Blu-ray burner is a great choice for a system build or upgrade, with fast writing speed and wide bland media support. It provides up to 16x maximum BD-R writing speed – the fastest on the market – and can read/write single and dual-layer BD-R discs, as well as DVD and CD formats. It's also 3D capable, so you can enjoy the latest 3D blockbusters with compatible displays. The BDR-209DBK drive also has features such as a QuickPlay which enables movies discs to be ready faster, a Noise Suppression design to minimize noise, an Anti-Dust design to increase durability, and Precision Writing Technology to minimize write errors. All these work together, assuring you of a great experience in both work and play.

  • newegg Faster burning 16x Blu-ray burner! Pioneer can now achieve up to 16x writing on BD-R media and up to 14x on BD-R Dual Layer (DL) discs.
  • newegg Watch 3D movies The drive is 3D capable. All you need is 3D playback software and a 3D display system.
  • newegg Play movies faster The amount of time between inserting a movie disc, and that disc being ready has been reduced. For movies on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, the disc is ready faster when compared to the BDR-208DBK.
  • newegg A quieter drive The tray cushion and the top cover of the BDR-209DBK has been designed to reduce disc rotation noise
  • newegg Increased life expectancy The sound barrier design that traps noise inside the drive also works to keep dust outside the drive. This makes the drive much more dust resistant, and drive failure due to dust is practically nonexistent.
  • newegg Top quality writing The chassis' design maximizes disc stability and write quality by reducing warping at high speed caused by disc vibration, especially on the outer areas of the disc.

5 out of 5 eggsA solid Drive

Pros: Burnt 50 blu-ray discs without problem as soon as I got it installed in my desktop. Not a single coaster, mind you I was using 50 Verbatim LTH BD-Rs (Model 43773).

Why would I mention my verbatim single layer BD-Rs? Most people will buy the LTH BD-Rs (lower quality) since they are cheaper than the HTL BD-Rs (higher quality).

How do I know it is higher quality? Good drives figure out the blank BD-R disc you inserted and makes internal adjustments to its writing strategy. My old Asus BW-12B1ST burns a full 25 GB BD-R in 15 minutes; the Pioneer BDR-209DBK takes 17 minutes to burn the same. Despite both drives claiming (on Nero) they are BOTH burning at 6x. I wish I had a LG or LITEON drive to check the PI and PF errors, but this Pioneer drive cannot support the examine "Disc Quality" option on Nero Drive Speed and OptiDisc Drive Control.

To burn and verify a full 25GB BD-R disc (LTH) on Nero I did a comparison you can see below:

Pioneer BDR-209DBK
Time: 33-34 minutes
Burn: 17 minutes to burn (6x recording speed)
Verify: 17 minutes to verify (max read speed 8x)

Asus BW-12B1ST
Time: 38 minutes
Burn: 15 minutes (6x recording speed)
Verify: 23 minutes (max read speed 6x)

Has a solid tray eject and speedy tray return mechanism. Much better than my Asus BW-12B1ST. Mind you my Asus drive is a very solid drive for me. It has burnt over 300+ BD-R Verbatim LTH BD-Rs (Model 43773) and hasn't given me so much as a quip. I burn them in 50 disc batches non-stop. The Pioneer drive was the next logical upgrade for me.

Cons: Newegg doesn't state all specifications and I was disappointed at the read speed of the burnt BD-Rs (LTH type) only at 8x. I discovered this when I was using Nero to verify my 50 burnt discs.

If you google "BDR-209DBK" and go to the Official Pioneer site, you will see the following:

Read Speed (Pioneer website)
12x BD-ROM
8x BD-R (LTH)
8x BD-R DL

Other Thoughts: It is pointless for these 16x burners to go that fast. There is no BD-R media that can go that fast. Burning fast increases your chances of making a coaster through disc wobbles. The fastest you can safely go is 6x.

3 out of 5 eggsPioneer BDR-209DBK

Pros: Blacked out faceplate is great for stealth look

Cons: Slow access speed, lacks features/capabilities found in most other models in same price range, and poor Blu-ray playback (artifacting at regular intervals regardless of software used or disc played - as if a hardware buffer issue).

Other Thoughts: If it weren't for the fact that I bought this drive as a means of providing built-in CD/DVD (Blu-ray not needed) disc access while maintaining a stealthy blacked-out look on a custom build, I would have returned it for refund. This is the most disappointing drive I've encountered in 15 years.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Blu Ray Burner

Pros: - Super quiet.
- Writes to M-Discs (to Blu Ray anyway). Used a set from Ridata

Cons: - Doesn't come with blu ray movie playback software

Other Thoughts: The con really isn't a con as most free movie playback software is pretty "meh".

This does everything I ask and it hasn't failed me (yet). Pioneer usually makes good products too.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works really well

Pros: Same as all other Blu-ray drives. Purchase for all black aesthetics.

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: My 2007 computer had it's own blu-ray drive when I bought it refurbished for 500 dollars on another website. It's the only part that never got upgraded until recently when it gave my computer a number of issues.
Glad for this purchase. It is awesome having a disk/dvd/blu-ray drive again.

5 out of 5 eggsBest burner yet.

Pros: I've owned 6 Pioneer BD-Burners over the past few years, and they actually last, and data is store/burned successfully on each dual-layer & Blu-Ray. The burning quality is stellar. -And nother pro is the price has always been fantastic. OF course LG is not too bad in price, but have been unlucky in getting a good drive. I've had 3 of those, and none compare. It could be a defect, but this is a main reason why I buy Pioneer.

Cons: none
