The high-performance Pioneer BDR-XD05B Portable Burner offers you an effortless way to backup movies, music, and more! It delivers blazing-fast writing speeds; a massive storage capacity; and supports BDXL, Blu-ray, DVD, and CD media; letting you breeze through all of your burning tasks.

Performance is only part of the story. The BDR-XD05B boasts an array of features – like PowerRead, PureRead2, and Auto Quiet mode* – providing you with a better movie and music experience. It is also bundled with CyberLink PowerDVD 12, PowerDirector 10 LE, and Power2Go 8 for easy handling of your multimedia content. Plus, this device is ultra-portable and USB bus powered. Take it with you anywhere you go!

Note: *Auto Quiet mode and PureRead can be configured, as well as enabled and disabled, with the Pioneer BDR-XD05B Drive Utility.

  • newegg Faster burning speed The BDR-XD05B delivers up to a 6x writing speed on BD-R single-layer and dual-layer discs, and a 4x writing speed on BD-R triple-layer and quad-layer discs.
  • newegg Store more data Enjoy up to 156% more data storage capacity than a 50GB Dual Layer Blu-ray disc. The ultra-compact USB 3.0 drive can read and write to all BDXL discs, including BD-R triple-layer 100GB media, BD-R quad-layer 128GB media, and BD-RE triple-layer 100GB media, as well as conventional Blu-ray discs (single-layer 25GB media and dual-layer 50GB media). Plus, it is also backward compatible to read and write to most DVD and CD recordable media.
  • newegg Smooth movie playback, better music playback Scratches, fingerprints, and other abnormalities on the surface of a disc can sometimes cause Blu-ray and DVD movie playback to stop. When a PowerRead-enabled drive is not able to read through obstructed areas of a disc, it will attempt to quickly move forward to the next available data point, resulting in smoother Blu-ray and DVD movie playback. Also, scratches and fingerprints on your CDs can also cause them to skip. PureRead2+ makes the drive re-read the obscured data to extract the original music as accurately as possible.
  • newegg A smarter drive The BDR-XD05B features an Auto Quiet mode. It helps monitor how they are being used, and adjust their speed automatically – high speed for data transfer, and low speed for music or movie playback.
  • newegg Useful software included PowerDVD 12 delivers award-winning playback software for Blu-ray and DVD movies on a PC, and will even upscale standard-definition content to high-definition quality. PowerDirector 10 LE lets you easily import, edit, and upload your home movies to social media sites. Power2Go 8 enables you to store and share valuable personal files on a secure and removable disc.
  • newegg Ultra-portable, eco-friendly drive This ultra-small and lightweight burner measures only 5.2 inches (W) X 0.55 inches (H) X 5.2 inches (D), and weighs a mere 8.46 ounces, making transportation a breeze. It’s also powered directly via USB (no AC adaptor required).

4 out of 5 eggsGood product, but not super durable

Pros: Performs well as advertised. Actually observes write speed specified. (Not all drives do). Clean and portable design. Does what it is designed to do.

Cons: As with most optical drives, it is very fragile. Having only ripped/burnt 400 or so DVD+R DL and BD discs (granted many of which were unbalanced and vibrates badly - but that is the name of the game), it has come to end of life in only 5 months. Time to buy another burner. Was hoping it might last a year or 1,000 discs.

By "end of life", I mean the state in which the drive still works, but with significantly increased burn-fail rate and you hear high-pitched tracking sound very often just to read DVD-ROM or CD-ROM that is clean and reasonably balanced, which is a behavior not seen in a brand new drive. I call it "end of life" because at that point you waste lots of discs due to burn failures and the drive becomes unusable.

Other Thoughts: It does what it advertises to do just fine, and durability was par for the course. I was wondering if there would be an extra "Pioneer" quality to it to withstand badly vibrating media.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Functional

Pros: Play DVD and CD

Cons: Doesn't play BluRay discs
Jet engine like sound

Other Thoughts: Mainly bought to upgrade the external DVD drive to my laptop and be able to play Blu-Ray movies and make backups to archive. This device would not play any Blu-Ray movie or read discs. I didn't even try to burn any data as at that point I thought it pointless to keep. When I did try a DVD movie the device was so loud I had to put headphones on to even attempt to hear the sound.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well so far

Pros: Nice slim design, lightweight, not too noisy, decent transfer speeds.

Cons: Cable that's bundled with it is a bit on the short side.

Other Thoughts: Drive was recognized under linux without any difficulty and is working well so far.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Fine

Pros: Plays/Burns DVD's and BD's
Portable
Thin
Good Quality
Comes with software to play DVD/BD

Cons: Can't think of any

Other Thoughts: The software that came with the drive works with the blurays that I have. I haven't bought any very recent ones so I will have to wait and see.

2 out of 5 eggsSuperb hardware, lame software

Pros: Solid hardware, have owned previous version (BDR-XD04) for more than 2 years without any issue.

Cons: The black version (mode numberl ended with B)comes with a non-working video play software (Cyberlink 10). This software might be able to play DVD but will not play any current Bluray movies. If you buy this version, you will just donate your hard earn money (compare to white/mac version, only bare drive, no software) to this hoax software company.

Same thing happened for previous version (BDR-XD04) which comes with a non-working PowerDVD6.

Other Thoughts: To Pioneer: My drive was made in Nov 2014. Why don't you at least test your OEM version of Cyberlink 10 with any current Bluray movie before asking for extra cash?

1 out of 5 eggsjunk

Pros: worked great for 3 days

Cons: after tax and all, $100 piece of junk

Other Thoughts: i think newegg buys seconds of these drives, and sells them as proper stock. this is the third drive from newegg that died after a short time period of time. buy this from another etailer, as this is the last dime i'm spending here.

5 out of 5 eggsReads everything I have

Pros: I have an extensive library of DVDs recorded over a period of ten years, and even the reliable players will no longer play most of them. I guess, even though they are high rated long life discs with dyes that can't be better, once the disc gets hot they begin to be unreadable in the players. Even my computer drives that recorded them cannot read some of them. But this little External player/recorder reads them ALL, allowing me to transfer them back to ISO files, saving the day!

Cons: None for my needs; the blue light stays on when the computer shuts down

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfectly

Pros: I have two computers with regular dvd players. The external Pioneer works perfectly in both. One has 2.0 and the other 3.0 USB and I really can't tell much difference. Burning a Blu-ray disc was easy and worked flawlessly.

Cons: The only con is when you press the open button it barely pops up. A longer usb cord would have also been nice.

Other Thoughts: Just want I wanted and needed, at a great price at Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's a winner!

Pros: Good, solid case design. Rubber cushion feet. Worked without additional power source with my laptop and several PCs. Win7x64 and Win8.1x64 loaded drivers on first install. Burns Verbatim Blu-ray LTH with IMGBurn without issues. Smooth Blu-ray movie playback. Tried but didn't need extra download software from Pioneer (High Speed USB or Drive Utility) that was available on website. PowerDVD12 available on included disk. I use older PowerDVD9 sans Cinavia. Not sure about PowerDVD12's disc protection scheme. It's a good free included package for most folks. FYI-Can only be installed with this drive attached.

Cons: A bit noisy, depending upon the data transfer rate required. Speeds up/slows down as needed, somewhat annoying. Not a show stopper. This can be altered with the Drive Utility.
Not much in the manual. A bit confusing regarding the USB connection & double-ended plug. You use the USB3 (blue) end in both USB2 & USB3 ports. The short USB2 style end is for extra power (if needed) only -- no data transfer, by itself, no drive recognition.

Other Thoughts: There's a mechanical slide release at bottom right front of unit. Take note before attempting to open the unpowered unit. The left front corner "Open" button only functions when powered up. It's electrical, not a mechanical release.
FWIW, I've had really good luck with at least four other internal Pioneer Blu-ray drives. They don't give me any trouble and do what they're supposed to. What more can you ask of a product?
