Watch 3D Blu-ray movies, or archive your data, with the Pioneer BDR-XD05S 6X External USB 3.0 BD/DVD/CD Burner. It supports almost all read-only, write-once, and rewritable media of BDXL/BD/CD/DVD formats, and is one of the world's smallest and lightest BD portable burners supporting BDXL. Support for 128GB Quad-Layer BDXL media means you can store libraries of music, photos, and footages on a single disc. Up to 6x speed for BD-R and BD-R DL media also makes it one of the fastest BD burners on the market.

In addition to excellent performance, the BDR-XD05S features an array of exclusive technology for optimized experience in everyday use. PowerRead can provide smoother movie playback when a disc has fingerprints or minor surface scratches. Auto Quiet mode intelligently adjusts the disc rotation speed to reduce noise (useful while watching movies or listening to music), and PureRead automatically adjusts the drive parameters to minimize sound glitches during music playback. Auto Quiet mode and PureRead can be configured, as well as enabled and disabled, with the Pioneer BDR-XD05S Drive Utility. Plus, this burner comes with a stylish sliver color, making it a great choice for Macbooks or sliver-toned Ultrabooks.

  • newegg Ultra Portability The portable device, measuring only 5.2" W x 0.55" H x 5.2" D and weighing a mere 8.46 ounces, also has the ability to be powered directly via USB (no AC adaptor needed).
  • newegg Store more data Up to 156% more data storage capacity than a 50GB Dual Layer Blu-ray Disc. The BDXL format supports BDXL Blu-ray media (including 128GB Quad-Layer [QL] and 100GB Triple Layer [TL] Blu-ray Disc). This drive supports almost all BD/DVD/CD read-only, recordable, and rewritable media, and strives to have best-in-class performance over these media.
  • newegg Faster burning It supports 6x writing on BD-R single-layer and dual-layer discs, and 4x writing on BD-R triple-layer and quad-layer discs. (6x BD-R and BD-R DL write speeds achieved using certain media, and only with the Pioneer USB driver installed [downloaded from the Firmware & Software tab].)
  • newegg Smooth movie playback Scratches, fingerprints, and other abnormalities on the surface of a disc can sometimes cause Blu-ray and DVD movie playback to stop. When a PowerRead enabled drive is not able to read through obstructed areas of a disc, it will attempt to quickly move forward to the next available data point, resulting in smoother Blu-ray and DVD movie playback. (PowerRead is not guaranteed to work with all disc conditions or under all PC environments.)
  • newegg A smarter drive Pioneer drives, with Auto Quiet mode, monitor how they are being used and will adjust their speed automatically: high speed for data transfer, and low speed for music or movie playback.
  • newegg A better music experience Scratches and fingerprints on your CDs can cause them to skip. A drive normally makes a calculated guess at the unreadable data, and attempts to correct this to match the original music. However, this is not 100% accurate. PureRead, when enabled, makes the drive reread the obscured data to extract the original music as accurately as possible. (PureRead2 is not guaranteed to work with all disc conditions or under all PC environments.)

4 out of 5 eggsGood device

Cons: The burn is not successfully sometimes.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Compact and comes with a lot of features. Would work quite well with a newer laptops if placed side by side on a table.

Cons: The provided USB wire could be longer in fact its short so it might not have the length to hook up to a tower PC depending on the location of the USB ports. I have several longer ones so it worked out. Though this might not be compatible with my printer server rig as its an older computer.

Other Thoughts: Also maybe including the power adapter would make more sense like other companies. Not all computers have the power to let the device run efficiently.

3 out of 5 eggsQuandry (future purchases)

Pros: Nice quality construction. Seems to work reasonably well.

Cons: Documentation leaves something to be desired. They offer a download utility for modifying operational speed but program DOES NOT work. It cannot find the "target." And their website sucks. Very difficult finding what you're looking for. For a premium product line, somebody is falling down on the job.

Other Thoughts: The unit appears to be doing speed changes (for quiet operation). So if the download is unnecessary, tell us!! I've always regarded Pioneer as expensive but worth it. However, their technical support is terrible. Just goes around in circles.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Works as promised, but...

Cons: ... needs software solution to play media. Pioneer is no help in this matter. I went ahead and bought the very expensive PowerDVD 15. Good luck finding anything free that will play movies without a LOT of tinkering (VLC won't work).

Also, it whirs loudly like an old 90's disk drive, though it calms down after a while.

Ridiculously short USB 3.0. As soon as I un-boxed it and saw what I can only describe as a joke, I went out and bought a longer one.

Other Thoughts: It's fast enough and there's enough power to operate it through the USB, though if you need to buy an A/C adapter for it... again, Pioneer is no help in either having one for purchase or suggesting one.

This gadget is cheap for a reason. You'll double the price buying software and another cable to make it fully function.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat price and preformance

Pros: small & portable. no external power cords, just the USB 3.0 cable.

Cons: The USB 3.0 cable is only about 18" long, this should be twice the length. If you have it attached to a desktop iMac you are limited to where you place the drive.
It is also a bit loud when it spins up, but managable.

Other Thoughts: This is a great little drive, my new iMac works with it perfectly without the need for any 3rd party software. You can get Toast if you want to realy put the Blue Ray features to work. This is a much better buy than the apple super drive in my opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat burning even with usb 2.0

Pros: really fast for making copies. even for using USB 2.0. does automatically eject if you have that feature set up. it's a electronic eject instead of a mechanical that usually wear out over time. doesn't use an external power adapter

Cons: none
