5 out of 5 eggsLONG LASTING DRIVE

Pros: I have used this drive constantly to read and burn over 3tb of movies and lots of music. Surprising to me that as much as it has been used there isn't smoke rolling out of it right now! Fast Write speeds, Quiet, works great. Think I was debating between this and a samsung that was highly ranked. Glad I got this.

Cons: Have never accomplished a lightscribe burn with it. The Nero software provided isn't a full version and I really don't feel like spending $100 to get it. Heard enough people whine about the provided nero with the drive that i never even bothered installing it.

Other Thoughts: Keep in mind if you burn a lot like I do that most the cheap dvd's only allow you to burn at 16x anyway so anything faster really doesn't matter.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet!

Pros: It works like a burner is supposed to. I don't use lightscribe, but it does come with the software and Nero 8.

Cons: The supplied drivers do not work with XP x64 pro. NO problem though, just go to website and use the vista x64 drivers.

Other Thoughts: I bought it cuz its the most expensive Asus and its still cheap!

4 out of 5 eggsMine is slow

Pros: It's been nearly a year and it still works.

Cons: The one I got seems to run slow.

Other Thoughts: It might be my mobo but the transfer rate is slow, and a pc performance calculator program can't detect the speed of the IDE port. I don't use it that much so it's not a really a problem.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive!

Pros: I bought this drive to replace the failing Sony that was in my Dell desktop. I currently have this and the Sony installed simultaneously; the drive installed easily and works well in a master-slave configuration. It runs quiet and is built solid. Nero 7 essentials disk is also included. Have yet to use Lightscribe, but seems to be detected and ready for use. Nero 7 includes LightScribe authoring software.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Windows shows the drive as DVD-RAM, but still appears to work with ±R disks too.

Before using LightScribe, go here:

and download the LightScribe System Software (LSS). It contains the drivers necessary for LightScribe.

3 out of 5 eggsA bit dodgey but its IDE

Pros: Let me start by saying I have had some what bad luck with this drive. However AFTER I finally got one that appeared to actually work properly, I have had no problems and have burned hundreds of discs now. What more can I say? The replacement works as it is suppose to... Nothing to exciting because it is a RW drive lol.

Cons: 1st Time: The product worked fine for about a week, I burned one disc and then it failed to read/burn or do anything. It made no sounds, and the disc would spin endlessly when disc was in drive, it would also cause my system to severely lag.

2nd Time: After RMAing for a replacement, the product ran wonderfully, until it began to make an odd grinding sound, this happened a couple more times until I noticed that The Foam Ring ( that is suppose to be attached at the top of the Drive Case ( inside ) ) Actually came off and that is what was cause the awful sound.

Also: Drive tends to lag on BIOS post if you have a disc in it... This could because of my BIOS or my motherboard and not the disc's fault... I still cant' find a solution for it yet. It's not to troublesome though, just a 5 second hang.

However after removing it from inside the case, the sound stopped and I haven't had any further problems yet.

Other Thoughts: I should of bought a SATA drive by ASUS instead. I'll stick with ASUS products even if it kills me. Seagate for hard drives <3

Would I recommend this ASUS drive? Absolutely not... Sorry ASUS ;[

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: OK price and burns decently

Cons: The lightscribe fuction worked for about 1 week until it refuses to print and more cds. It began to take longer and longer to print and then nada. I think I got maybe 5 cds printer before it tanked. The burner portion still operates though.

Other Thoughts: Lightscibe what a waste. I bought the special lightscribe media and now cant even use it as intended.

2 out of 5 eggsMy new coaster collection

Pros: Asus makes great motherboards...Lightscribe works fine...It reads disks well...Gave me lots of coasters I can use at parties.

Cons: Vibrates loudly at times unless you put your finger on the front of the tray, roughly half my burn attempts have ended in coasters.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully the Blu-ray drive I am planning on purchasing from a different company will allow me to properly burn media.

1 out of 5 eggsRemember to clean off the excess lubricant

Pros: Somewhat quiet. Disc tray is pretty solid, not as much wobble as some of the cheaper drives.

Cons: Didn't work well for me. Has trouble reading discs, some won't read at all. Defective unit.

Too much excess lubricant at the bottom of the tray. Most people don't look down there, so be sure to wipe some of it off before you accidentally get it on your hand and smear the discs. Very thick multilingual manual, but no information on the drive's specs.

Other Thoughts: If you're having trouble removing the tray bezel, use a dime for leverage along the gap.
