FYI
- Pros: see other
- Cons: i want one :(
- Other Thoughts: just so everyone knows...... the 'crippled software' bundled with this software doesn't even matter if you don't have the right audio hardware in your computer. most systems downgrade the signal to 2.0channel PCM anyway, so outputting 5.1 from the software then down to 2.0 in the hardware doesn't get you anywhere. If you want to run an HDMI HTPC you need something like the asus xonar or auzuntech blu-ray/hdmi cards to properly output Dolby Digitnal/Dolby True HD. trust me, i have looked into this issue because i do audio/video through the GPU over hdmi currently, and i only get 2.0channel PCM and my sound system has to upmix it with Pro Logic II
Worked without any drama
- Pros: This worked out of the box without any problems. I spent a week trying to get an LG Bluray drive to work, and eventually had to RMA it. I thought my HTPC needed an upgrade, but I guess it was a bad unit. The ASUS drive works great, reads everything I have thrown at it, and it is quiet.
- Cons: I hate that they sell these things with such crippled software. The Cyberlink BluRay player works, but only 2 channel sound is available without an expensive upgrade. Who is going to go to the effort and expense of putting in a high def video system and then settle for 2 channel sound? That's not right. The LG came with the same software, so I guess it is an industry thing.
- Other Thoughts: I left it at five eggs despite the software, which really does not reflect on how the drive works. After the issues I had with the LG drive, I would definitely buy this again.
- Pros: When it works, it's a great drive.
- Cons: Worked once. Hasn't worked since.
- Other Thoughts: It could be the Formula II Maximus board. All but one SATA port stopped working after about a month. I've been using ASUS products for years, but probably won't buy another one anytime soon.
