The ASUS DRW-24B1ST is capable of reading and writing data on DVD±R/±RW, DVD-RAM formats. It is a power saving drive and allows you to permanently delete the data on rewritable discs. This provides you with flexibility and efficiency in terms of multimedia data storage and sharing.

  • newegg E-Green The innovative drive E-Green Engine technology features an E-Green Mode that automatically closes drive applications when not in use to help conserve energy - helping the environment by decreasing CO2 emissions and reducing the depletion of trees.
  • newegg E-Hammer E-Hammer allows you to permanently delete the data on writable disc (CD-R and DVD-R) formats. Once the data is deleted, it cannot be recovered or restored, and the optical drive will not be able to read the disc. This ensures data security, eliminates the hassle of scratching your old discs, and conforms with ASUS’ commitment to environmental protection.
  • newegg AVRS (Auto Vibration Reducing System) The AVRS technology is designed to minimize the vibration caused by the spindle motor and resonance between components as well as the drive and PC cases. AVRS is designed to reduce vibration and noise induced by unbalanced mass of rotating machinery. With AVRS, ASUS DRW-24B1ST provides high readability and playability.
  • newegg OTS (Optimal Tuning Strategy) With OTS, the drive will perform a test before really burning which generate the optimal burning strategy automatically for the best burning quality.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: It does what I expect an optical drive to do at a price that I like.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I haven't found a better value.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well, but noisy

Pros: Hassle free, plug and play install. It just works. Quick enough for my needs.

Cons: A bit noisy when it first spins up. Built the system it is in to be quiet, and this drive is by far the loudest part.

Other Thoughts: The DVD drive in my old Dell was quieter, but slower. I dont know that any 48X Dvd drive would have been as quiet as I would have liked.

It did fire up without problems, and does everything it should without any unnecessary hassle.

4 out of 5 eggsHiccups cause hiccups

Pros: Standard drive, nothing fancy. Great drive for the money.

Cons: Went on "vacation" for a bit

Other Thoughts: Had a hard drive issue in a build and when trying to reload programs, it stopped opening. I had to use the emergency open technique. Then the drive tray wouldn't close. Had to do a "hard reboot" on the drive (unplugging and re-plugging in to wiring harness). Has worked fine since.

2 out of 5 eggsIncorrect Buffer memory info

Pros: Fast read speeds.

Cons: I went to Asus website and it says this drive has 2MB of buffer memory, which is important to prevent buffer under runs while burning. However, when I checked with ImgBurn it reports only 0.5MB of buffer memory. I noticed this right away during my first burn with this drive, normally I would see the device buffer consistently at 100%-99% during a burn, but on this device the buffer would never go above 98% and would dip down to 30% and even more many times during a burn and I'm recording at the lowest speed possible on this drive 6x. This makes me wonder if it will burn coasters at higher speeds.

It annoys me that Asus posts the incorrect buffer size on their website, a practice which I find deceptive.

I expect high ethical standards from a great company as Asus.

Other Thoughts: I have an old Sony DW-D22A DVD writer made in 2004 and it has 2MB of buffer memory and still works fine now, I never see those kinds of buffer fluctuations on this drive at 4x, device buffer stays at a consistent 100% during burns.

This is the year 2015, memory prices are cheap, why are they putting less memory on newer drives. I mean how expensive are 2MB at a time where I could get 64GB usb flash drive for $10. This is a new decade, make better DVD drives not worse than the older ones!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I have never burned a bad CD/DVD with this drive in one years ownership of this burner. The E-HAMMER software that comes with it is great for my environment because it lets me destroy the data on all discs that are discarded.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsNice replacment DVD burner

Pros: As a replacement for my older, "over used" ASUS DVD burner, which started to choke on DIVX software; this was it. This burner has so far been excellent for my needs. Including the fact that it is backwards compatible burning my old 1X speed CD-RW's and 2.4X DVD-RW's. which I still use to this day. My costly investment, during which these were expensive back 18 years ago; continues to pay for itself.

Cons: ? ... ?

Other Thoughts: Given my experience, I have been burning Optical disks since the days when they didn't have them for the IDE interface and were only available in SCSI, (1990's).
Also, include the fact that you had to purchase a IDE-to-SCSI, adapter card and burner either in combo or separately. Very expensive back then.

I DON'T even want to explain the difficulty, configuring these older drives for a Win16 or MSDOS 8-bit based system.
