The ASUS DRW-24B1ST is capable of reading and writing data on DVD±R/±RW, DVD-RAM formats. It is a power saving drive and allows you to permanently delete the data on rewritable discs. This provides you with flexibility and efficiency in terms of multimedia data storage and sharing.

  • newegg E-Green The innovative drive E-Green Engine technology features an E-Green Mode that automatically closes drive applications when not in use to help conserve energy - helping the environment by decreasing CO2 emissions and reducing the depletion of trees.
  • newegg E-Hammer E-Hammer allows you to permanently delete the data on writable disc (CD-R and DVD-R) formats. Once the data is deleted, it cannot be recovered or restored, and the optical drive will not be able to read the disc. This ensures data security, eliminates the hassle of scratching your old discs, and conforms with ASUS’ commitment to environmental protection.
  • newegg AVRS (Auto Vibration Reducing System) The AVRS technology is designed to minimize the vibration caused by the spindle motor and resonance between components as well as the drive and PC cases. AVRS is designed to reduce vibration and noise induced by unbalanced mass of rotating machinery. With AVRS, ASUS DRW-24B1ST provides high readability and playability.
  • newegg OTS (Optimal Tuning Strategy) With OTS, the drive will perform a test before really burning which generate the optimal burning strategy automatically for the best burning quality.

5 out of 5 eggsSuch a great deal!

Pros: I do not use my optical drive often, therefore I didn't want to spend a ton of money on one. At $20 this was perfect for me! Looks great and copies information to the harddrive quickly.

Cons: For $20 I have none. It's a great product.

1 out of 5 eggsAudiobook exploded inside. And then...

Pros: The drive ran perfectly well for 5 months, ripping a variety of audiobook CDs in iTunes (probably went through about 100 CDs in total that were ever inside, no DVDs or any burning performed).

Cons: Regrettably, my local public library's copy of disc #4 of Nora Roberts' 'Blue Dahlia' was apparently too much for the poor little drive to handle--the disc, quite literally, exploded inside the drive, with a sound somewhere between a live giraffe being fed into a wood chipper and a Democrat on election night in November 2004. A variety of pieces came out of the opening once I managed to get the paper clip in, around 75% of the total disc itself. Apart from its use as a makeshift maraca, the drive is now completely useless as originally intended.

Other Thoughts: After spending 10 minutes navigating through the Byzantine Asus web site in an almost-futile attempt to setup an RMA, I managed to create a case and then called the Indiana phone number (812 area code) provided to me on E-mail. I spoke with an obviously non-American named the American name of "Irwin"; and while pleasant, Irwin was completely incapable of arranging an advance replacement of this $20 item--nor could he even arrange an RMA, as all he could do was initiate a request for one. I'm told that, within 24 hours, I'll receive an E-mail with an RMA number to send the maraca drive into for disassembly, inspection, and determination as to whether or not the $20 drive can be repaired (which of course no logical business would ever devote such resources to, and which no logical customer would ever accept back as something they would feel comfortable using).

It was also amusing when Irwin refused to divulge the name of even the country his call center was located in, doing so in the name of "security reasons"; all he could say was that it was "offshore" (presumably from the United States, as the United States would be offshore to every other country on Earth except for Canada and Mexico). I asked him if Asus was concerned that its customers would be calling in nuclear strikes due to their collective anger over how badly Asus technical support was treating them, but he did not seem to think this was a factor and in fact he had no idea why Asus prevents its technicians from revealing the name of the country in which their call center is located.

Finally, my request to speak with a manager was rebuffed on the grounds that it would take approximately 4 hours to receive such a callback. When pressed on this matter, Irwin told me that the management staff receives a great many such calls each day and there is always a significant backlog. Imagine that.

I feel quite confident that I will not purchase another Asus drive in the future; indeed, any component. Their gear has always been first rate in my experience with my clients and on my own, and I would have considered this a rare anomaly... but with such an atrocious customer service experience, there is no way that I could possibly recommend Asus products to others in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat choice for minimal usage

Pros: Very inexpensive and gets the job done perfectly if you're like me and don't use a lot of disks. I only ever use the DVD drive for things like installing drivers and ripping music, so nothing too intensive. The drive looks great and blends perfectly with a black case.

Cons: A little noisy at times, but that could be an issue with my case's slot rather than an issue with the drive.

Pros: It reads and burns disks...who would've thought?

Cons: It doesn't improve my gaming experience. :(

5 out of 5 eggsBecoming obsolete but it works I guess.

Pros: It's your standard optical drive that reads and writes data. Plug it in, it will do it's job.

Cons: This model didn't come in an actual box or include SATA cables. Keep that in mind.

Other Thoughts: I was on the fence about getting an optical drive at all but I guess they still have a place in the world. Asus is a great brand. Minimal risk with getting this product.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid

Pros: None

Cons: Light comes on. Does not work. AT ALL. Avoid.

Other Thoughts: Because I was slow getting this into my wive's system, I cannot return it to Newegg. My bad. Selling sub-standard items, their bad. I am REALLY disappointed.
