3 out of 5 eggsGood drive, still no rebate

Pros: The drive works great, you do need 2 usb ports though

Cons: Sent everything in needed for rebate, still havn't gotten it. Ordered it 1-27. I bought due to the $20 MIR making it around $20 total but as it turns out it cost me $40. Don't buy it for the rebate. it is a good drive though.

Pros: Pretty desktop paperweight. Would be a decent kludge if you really need a fragile external DVD burner. Decent price if you're able to get the Asus rebate which is problematic.

Cons: Forget receiving the $20 Asus rebate. Pricey without it. Dust magnet in black casing. Consumes a bit of desk space with the carriage opening space needed and double USB cables required. Double USB cables doesn't supply adequate power on many machines and doesn't function when both cables are used off a USB hub. Don't bother with the supplied crippled software package.

Other Thoughts: Superior burning and media freeware is available in freeware and shareware versions.

4 out of 5 eggsLooks Great, Performs Well

Pros: Small, sleek, very professional appearance

It only requires one USB plug to operate. It has the typical cable with the main plug and a plug for additional power, but works great with only the main cable plugged in. It also works great using an old 3' cable which is what I will be using.

Main cable is 13" and the auxiliary power cable is 26" so it can easily reach around a laptop for additional power, the good news is you don't need that extra power.

High quality burns; analyzed using Nero Disc Speed.

Very quiet.

Great for watching DVD's, when jumping chapters the response time is outstanding.

Cons: It is a Hitachi/LG drive in an Asus enclosure. It may still be a good drive but it is not what I expected.

Would have appreciated a longer main cable.

Smudges easily.

Ripping is a bit slow. Maxes out around 5.2MB/s ~ 3.7x which translates to a 30 min. rip.

Other Thoughts: While burning with ImgBurn, the 1MB buffer fills to either 51% or 59% and occasionally bounces to 67% but never goes above that. It does not seem to affect performance but still seems strange. Perhaps this is why the ripping is so slow?

I have not used the included software.
