5 out of 5 eggsSomewhat loud

Pros: Plays Blu Ray
Recognized Windows 8.1 immediately (if anyone was wondering)

Cons: Not the quietest computer part ever

Other Thoughts: Works great! Loads fast, no problems whatsoever. I do have to say that this is the loudest component in my HTPC when its running, but it doesn't really bother me since I didn't set out to build the quietest computer ever.

Also - you will need to buy blu ray software so don't throw a tantrum when you cant play your blu ray redbox as soon as you install it

2 out of 5 eggsStutters on most Blue-Rays

Pros: - Cheap
- Fast

Cons: - With the latest version of PowerDVD and Windows 8.1 it stutters on all but 1 BR I have played. It starts after about a half hour and then happens every 10min or so.
- ASUS site has no firmware updates

Other Thoughts: I rip every movie I own for my media server. This works fine for that. I have an older Samsung drive that I have swapped back to for playback from disk in my HTPC. It is much slower though, which is why I bought this one.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy to install and does exactly what its supposed to do.

Cons: it wont play vinyl or 45's. Actually quite disappointed in that fact.

Other Thoughts: it plays DVD and CD no problem but you have to buy a Blu-Ray program to play blu-ray. I already knew that when I bought this so I was ready. Its a good player.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works perfectly. Decently priced. Asus rarely disappoints.

Cons: Would have liked some Blu Ray playing software included, but I understand why it wasn't. That software is pretty expensive on its own.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute junk

Pros: Works ok for playing a disk at 1x most of the time.

Cons: If you ask it to work hard (rip or burn a disk) it will lock up and stop reading any more disks until the computer is powered off and back on. This is in a brand new pc with new cables. No driver updates or firmware are available. Will be getting a different brand, ASUS support isn't worth dealing with for such a cheap drive.

Other Thoughts: Great if your computer needs a cup holder or if you enjoy rebooting.

5 out of 5 eggsWay better than my Lite-On drive.

Pros: Fast. Good price. No complaints at all. For everyone complaining about needing software to watch blu-rays, read the description. This is an OEM bare drive. It doesn't come with software and it's not supposed to.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsGets the job done

Pros: Reads all my optical disks without fail!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: OEM model, no SATA cable, no software, no pretty box, no manual.

1 out of 5 eggsasus does not back their product

Pros: None does not work

Cons: disc drive powers on, but does not read any discs. Called Asus technical support, they said only thing that I could do was to install the drivers. However, looking at asus support online, there are no available drivers. Then the guy told me to reinstall windows 7...waste of money and pathetic tech support

5 out of 5 eggsDecent BD-ROM

Pros: Works like a charm, never had a single problem with it in over a year.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Some people seem to be giving low stars because this BD-ROM doesn't play commercial blueray disks, but I guess they don't know anything about computers or blueray discs. You need to install the correct codexes for playback. This isn't hard to, or difficult to find steps for online.

2 out of 5 eggsMaybe I got an especially bad one, but...

Pros: Played DVDs well enough, and does play blu-ray disks if you have the right software to play it (FYI people, this won't play Blu-Ray movies if you don't pay for overpriced software than can play the disk, but it works just fine once you buy the software).

Cons: This thing worked well enough, save for a lot of the issues other people mentioned (the drive refused to stay closed half of the time, and I'd have to press the button to close the disk drive five or six times to make it stay closed). Most of these problems were annoying, but were okay to deal with. However, a problem less easy to deal with is that the drive caught on fire this morning at the place where the SATA power cable plugs in. I realize I may have gotten a bad one, but just an FYI for anyone thinking of buying one of these.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I do apologize for the issue you experienced with your drive, do you happen to know your Serial Number for the drive? We do value our customers and take negative customer experiences very seriously. Would you please email me at CL-Scott1@asus.com and write down case # N N140812139 in the subject line.

I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.

Regards,

Scott
