1 out of 5 eggsWorked - Sorta

Pros: Was a nice deal, I usually like and trust ASUS products.

Cons: It took more than 5 minutes to access any disks, and when any disk was inserted, it sounded like a wood chipper with dulled blades.

Other Thoughts: RMA'd no problem. I did replace it with another ASUS drive, just not this model. We'll see how that goes.

2 out of 5 eggsDIED IN JUST UNDER 2 YEARS

Pros: Worked great, fast and quiet.

Cons: Completely quit reading discs in just under 2 years (got it for Christmas in 2012, stopped working Christmas Eve 2014). Very frustrating that I am already having to purchase a new drive. WIll not likely buy ASUS again due to premature failure. Was only used to rip 10-20 Blu-ray disks. Warranty should be better, (or at least build-quality should be better). WOuld give 4-5 stars if it hadnt failed, or was covered by warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: -Fast Drive
-Relatively quiet

Cons: -Price

Other Thoughts: If you're fine with ripping your Blu-Ray's to disk, this drive will make short work of whatever you throw at it.

However, I wasn't able to find any playback software, free or otherwise, that was compatible with Win 8.1 and my setup. This is not a criticism of the product, but the ecosystem it seems to be in.

Confirmed with Cyberlink that my HW setup was HDCP-compliant, but PowerDVD 14 Pro and WinDVD 11 would consistently crash upon playback using multiple titles. Free options would either be unable to open the disk or require plugin compiling and encryption key copying, which sorta killed the convenience factor.

5 out of 5 eggsBlu-Ray Drive

Pros: Just a plain normal blu-ray drive, operates good. Read/Write speed is not exeptional but it works.

Cons: Tray is noisy , drive itself is a jet engine, the blue LED is a second sun in a dark room, might toast some bread with it .

1 out of 5 eggsTray not working

Pros: Blue LED works :). BOIS detected the unit.

Cons: Tray not working, (will not open) as a result - unable to use this drive for it's purpose. Can't be used even as a coffee cup holder (if You know the joke)

Other Thoughts: It is not just about the unit. It looks that ASUS cut it's expenses on quality check. As a result this it what happens - marked is flooded with products that don't pass the final factory tests and we as consumers have to do this work for them, I will explain - 1. Buying the product 2. Testing the product (in my case it didn't pass). 3. Returning the product to manufacture (or store). 4. Pray for mercy to get a good product - or money back. The RESULTS: I have to spend my time and money to do work for ASUS quality product test department.

2 out of 5 eggsBought for Blu-Ray...

Pros: Fast at ripping music

Cons: Doesn't write mp3 or audio cds at all. Doesn't read Blu-Rays even with third party software. It will play dvd and music, but thats it. Wasted money.

Other Thoughts: I bought this as an OEM so of course it came with no software to play anything and there are no drivers to speak of on the Asus website. I put a BR in the drive and get nothing, I put a DVD in the drive and it shows right up. I figured i would have found a solution for this issue by now, but it seems i am not going to find one. Faulty device.

2 out of 5 eggsOK drive, wish I had purchased different brand

Pros: I'd say a 7/10 when working, decent picture and read speed

Cons: Stopped working soon after purchase, but only intermittently. After 9 months completely died. Was pretty noisy even when working. Led on front is way too bright blue and is an annoyance.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased so many other Asus products over the years, and have been happy with nearly all of them. I don't this is an overall indicator of Asus but this drive in my case was a dud. If I had it replaced and it worked flawlessly afterwards I would be happier.
