3 out of 5 eggsdoes the trick for a great price

Pros: it does exactly what it says - burns bluray data - if you want to use it as a player of blu ray video disc burner you will need to spand $ on software - which I did and works great - I make home video disks with animated menus and this thing works like a charm. Love the color

Cons: it is flimsy - hard to close the door because pressure on top causes the case to buckle. the double usb interface doesnt fit snugly into my laptop so I have to leave it alone while it burns so the connection stays intact - slight bump and you got a bluray coaster

Other Thoughts: if you are looking to jump in for a cheap price to burn blu ray discs keep in mind the cost of software to do what you want.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid: Unreliable and non-dependable

Pros: Think and a sleek look.

Cons: Worked initially. I authored and produced 5 Blu-ray discs. It stopped recognizing Blu-ray discs thereafter. I tried different desktops and Blu-ray media but to no avail. When I insert a Blu-ray disc, there are some initial read seeks but nothing else. The drive shows in "My Computer" but when I click on it, it prompts for a disc.

Other Thoughts: I even tried to get power from a power outlet instead of the computer's USB drive but to no avail.

Avoid Asus Blu-ray drives.

4 out of 5 eggsMBP Friendly

Pros: Plug and Play works great with my late 2011 MBP. If you have a mac this is great option for your blu-ray needs. Make MKV Friendly. Full Discs typically ripped in 30min or less. Plays nice with Roxio Toast and DVD FAB as well. All around a great portable drive for the price.

Cons: Material Doesn't seem as sturdy as other other slim-drives out there, No Official mac support have to have some form of windows to get/flash new firmware.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat value

Pros: no external power needed, runs on two usb ports, true 6X burning speed, ASUS reliability, compact size

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I've owned this drive for nearly a year now. It has performed flawlessly, burning 1080p HD home video directly to blu ray. It burns 6X speed via two USB 2.0 ports on my ASUS laptop. Two hours of video = 15 minutes of burning in my experience. Playback on my Sony blu ray player is smooth - just like store-bought blu ray movies. I'm no IT pro, but it was easy to set up and easy to use.

5 out of 5 eggscheap reliable blu ray burner for backup

Pros: Nice sized drive appropriate for use in laptop setting where slipping in a burner isn't an option. Works well no extra power cables (two usb ports though).

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: It's really thin. I liked the one I had so much I bought a second. Takes the strain off a laptop optical drive if you are ripping CDs or other content. I don't watch blu ray on my laptop, but some people complain about the lack of a blu ray software player. For me, this is actually a plus. I bought a blu ray burner so I could do backups. I like not paying $20 extra, honestly.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Burner

Pros: Works like it supposed to. No problems at all.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Took mine apart to put in my laptop. The drive is a Sony Optiarc. Great drive swapped it with my laptop drive and now I have a great blu ray burner in my laptop and an external DVD burner for portability. I'm sure I voided my warranty but oh well everything is working great.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Player

Pros: It played all my Bluray discs, both movies and data discs. For playing the movies i used a freeware player off of the 'net. (VLC Player)

Cons: I've had constant instances of it "disappearing" while burning a bluray disc. I was using rosewill, verbatim and memorex. Windows acts as if it has been unplugged and then plugged back in every time i clicked the burn button. I used ASUS's provided burning software.

Other Thoughts: Even though this burner had the above issue with burning discs. it didn't make any of my discs into coasters, which is a plus in a way. doesn't work as a burner but doesn't destroy your media on the "fails" either.

I returned the item to Newegg. they were very accommodating. such that even if there is a better price elsewhere, i'd pay more to stick with Newegg's Customer Service (sorry if it sounds like an ad, i was just very pleased.)

I gave 3 stars as it was 100% good on the player aspect, and only -80% on the burner (didn't make coasters for me)

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not work with optical quantum discs

Pros: Cheap. Read BD faster than my internal Liteon reader

Cons: Does not recognize optical quantum discs

Other Thoughts: RMA mine. Does not work with optical quantum discs. If you don't get these discs, then might not matter, but then again, i don't know what else this is not compatible with.

I have several optical quantum discs so this is a deal breaker... Got the samsung se-506ab which does work with optical quantum..

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not recognize quantum optical disc

Pros: Faster reading speed than my internal liteon bd reader
Very portable.

Cons: Does not recognize quantum optical discs at all. Wont burn blank or read burned quantum optical discs. burned ridata and memorex discs fine.

Other Thoughts: very cheap for a usb bd-r burner after rebate (80$) but then if it doesnt recognize any quantum optical discs, i have a real problem with that because i have a ton of those discs burned. still not sure if i will keep it..

got a samsung SE-506AB for $125. at least sammy does do optical quantum....

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: No problems with it as a burner/player, has worked wonderfully. It's a sleek design, portable, light-weight, and easy to use. Comes with software to burn discs which was nice.

Cons: The included USB cable is a bit short. I'm force to run it through a USB hub in order to connect it to my tower. For a laptop it is fine. On my desktop (win 7 x64) I've had occasional instances of it "disappearing" while being used. Windows acts as if it has been unplugged and then plugged back in. I'm not certain if this is an issue with the drive or a side effect of having to run it through a hub. It does not happen often and has not been a major issue, just a minor inconvenience at times.

Other Thoughts: Would have done 3.5 eggs if possible.

The casing feels a little flimsy, trying to push the tray back in sometimes the top part will bend down and stop it. Just be careful when handling it. Push the tray back in from the sides or with two hands.
