3 out of 5 eggsFirmware needed

Pros: I've had mine for a long time and I have burned a considerable number of disks with no problem. Works well with IMGBurn which is free.

Cons: When companies produce new media, they also use new MIDs (Media Identifitation string). In order to work with the new media, you need to update your firmware.

My unit is a re-package Lite-on and it came with firmware version 1.03. ASUS' web site has no firmware for this. Not even 1.03. So if you have 1.02, you cannot even get this far.

I now have two spindles of blanks that will burn to the 90% line then fail, due to firmware issues. I have worked with the company that sells the media, ASUS and Lite-ON. So far, I am still waiting for an answer. This started on Dec 7.

Other Thoughts: Not a bad drive, but the support is rather weak. Also, repackaging two different drives with the same model number causes confusion when you want to do research on it. Half the information posted is not applicable.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS Support is the WORST!!!

Pros: None.

Maybe it will work in your PC. If it doesn't, don't expect any assistance from ASUS.

Cons: * Drive is not compatible with the chipset on my motherboard
* Drive cannot be returned due to rebate
* ASUS Support is horrible - They don't know how to read, they refuse to offer a solution, when I offer solutions they ignore me.

Other Thoughts: My PC has an ASUS DVD drive in it which works just fine. I also have an older, slower Sony BD-RW drive that works just fine, which I was going to replace with this faster ASUS BD-RW drive.

When I connect the drive to my PC, it is seen in the BIOS, it is seen in device manager, and Windows automatically installs the driver for it. When I insert a disc of any type into the drive, it continues to report that no disc is inserted.

First let start with the initial contact to ASUS, I received the automated confirmation that my ticket had been submitted. I waited over a week with no response. Finally I resubmitted and got a response in a few days.

The response started out with "I understand your problem is ...." They were completely incorrect with their restatement of my problem. I would refer back to my problem description pointing out the details they had failed to comprehend. Overall there were a total of 8 responses from them where they continued to misstate the problem each time until finally they simply refused to help me and said I needed to replace my computer for the drive to work.

Additionally throughout the series of emails, they would ask me for information that was already in the ticket, and in fact had been a required field in the ticket submission form.

The ASUS support website has no updated drivers or firmware for this drive. Yet one of the misguided suggestions by their support person was to upgrade the driver. They should really check their own website before making invalid suggestions.

While this drive is an internal drive that uses a SATA cable to attach, one response told me to use a different USB cable to connect the drive. Where do they find these complete fools for tech support?

My motherboard is an AMD based system using the 890GX chipset, but when I attach the drive to a different motherboard from the same manufacturer with the 990FX chipset (a friends system), the drive works just fine. Due to this bit of information, it seems that a firmware patch to the ASUS drive should be able to resolve the issue. ASUS refused to even consider this as an option, and completely ignored my suggestion to that every time I suggested it.

Due to ASUS’s slow response to my support request, the rebate was already submitted in order to beat the submission deadline. Because of this, I'm now in a situation where I'm unable to return the drive to Newegg. I asked if ASUS could supply me a replacement drive with similar features that is compatible with the 890GX chipset. They basically told me to replace my motherboard to get their drive to function properly.

ASUS has been unable to direct me to any documentation that I may have been able to review prior to my purchase that would have indicated this drive’s incompatibility with the 890GX chipset, and yet has refused to provide me any solution short telling me to buy a new computer at my own expense.

What a ridiculous excuse for product support!!!!

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive for the money

Pros: I have had zero problems with this drive. Notably I have only used it for reads, no writes yet, but it has had no problem with any disc I've put in.
Blue Ray works fine. Installs, games, rips of cd's and dvd's -- no problem. Same for discs' I wrote with old burners from years back.

Cons: I haven't had it that long (so I didn't feel right giving five eggs).
It's not the quietest drive I've ever had but it's no louder than other drive either. Plus I don't run mine constantly.

1 out of 5 eggsBW doesn't deliver

Pros: Looks good in the box

Cons: where to start??? bought this drive a loooong time ago because i got it on-sale. never had occasion to use it. this week i finally have a reason and the thing doesn't work. having tried all manner of utilities to create blu-rays, i finally located the original install disk and attempted to update the driver. i can't even get the asus site to cough up a valid driver for it.

Other Thoughts: now, don't get me wrong...when i first got the unit i did try to install and make it work using a couple burning tools, but never could get it to work properly (read 'at all')...priorities changed so i wasn't too upset about its failure to deliver. now my priorities are back on for disk backups and this thing (& asus) have let me down.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS Black 12X

Pros: It installed my OS. Other than that there are no "Pros" whatsoever.

Cons: It's only good for installing the OS.
Doesn't do anything it was supposed to do.

Other Thoughts: I'm not as deep into computers as most people, but I know my fair share. I'm very upset with this product because until recently I didn't know how useless this thing really was. It can really only install the OS, other than that.. Forget about it. I do NOT recommend buying this. I wanted to watch a movie one night off of a CD and found out it couldn't even do that. After some research it appears that it has the technology inside of it that is capable of doing everything the box says buy can't actually do any of it due to a lack of software on the device (I think that's the way to say it).

Long story short, don't waste your money and buy something else.

4 out of 5 eggsRebate scam

Pros: Burner works great , never a problem dealing with Newegg-The Best, but beware of mail-in rebate, I received a email from ASUS rebate center and they informed me of never receiving my mail-in.

Cons: Mail-in rebate.

Other Thoughts: Hi, I mailed everything out to you, i have read many a review on newegg of customers not getting rebates . instead of requiring mail-in rebate consider email-in rebate. I took pictures of the packaging box with the bar code ( i cut out) you required along with forms you requested. If I don't receive my rebate I will never again purchase another ASUS product and surely never deal with mail-in rebate scams.

2 out of 5 eggsDrive expired same time the warranty did

Pros: The drive is solid, when it works. It read blu ray, and everything below it.

Cons: Three days after the warranty expired, so did the drive. It's a power issue, tested on multiple computers and multiple operating systems. The tray won't even come out. Don't buy this drive it you want it to last longer then a year.
