3 out of 5 eggsForget about the rebate.

Pros: It was shipped quickly.

It seems to be a good product, hard to tell yet.

Cons: They need like four separate things copied/printed/detached and sent by snail mail, and they will give you a faster rebate if and only if you agree to take less rebate, otherwise it is guaranteed to take months.

I don't even know if it works yet.

Have to fill out the paperwork within a day or the rebate is invalid.

Other Thoughts: They ought to just offer the better price, or compete on quality with other models.

If they spelled out Linux support, it would be nice.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after two weeks

Pros: Cheap after $40 rebate. Comes in nice box. Fast shipping. Newegg rocks as always.

Cons: Died after I ripped about 5 Blu-ray discs in the first two weeks. No longer recognized Blu-ray dics on my windows 7 machine. Popped it in my Vista 32bit machine and it didn't even see the drive. Very disappointed with this product. Not even sure if it's worth spending $$ to ship it back for repair/replacement.

Other Thoughts: Great while it lasted. Ripped Blu-ray discs a lot faster than my old 4x bdr drive. Should have packed it up and returned to newegg the first week but I had already mailed out the rebate. Oh well.

3 out of 5 eggsMissing blu ray play back software

Pros: It is a cheap (when on sale) and fast blu ray drive and plays DVD's and CD's just fine

Cons: The drive didn't come with Dlu Ray playback software for Windows or Mac. Without that it is worthless for playing Blu Ray movies.

Other Thoughts: Should have read the fine print and realized it doesn't come with the required software to play Blu Ray movies before ordering this while it was on sale.

3 out of 5 eggsFirmware needed

Pros: I've had mine for a long time and I have burned a considerable number of disks with no problem. Works well with IMGBurn which is free.

Cons: When companies produce new media, they also use new MIDs (Media Identifitation string). In order to work with the new media, you need to update your firmware.

My unit is a re-package Lite-on and it came with firmware version 1.03. ASUS' web site has no firmware for this. Not even 1.03. So if you have 1.02, you cannot even get this far.

I now have two spindles of blanks that will burn to the 90% line then fail, due to firmware issues. I have worked with the company that sells the media, ASUS and Lite-ON. So far, I am still waiting for an answer. This started on Dec 7.

Other Thoughts: Not a bad drive, but the support is rather weak. Also, repackaging two different drives with the same model number causes confusion when you want to do research on it. Half the information posted is not applicable.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS Support is the WORST!!!

Pros: None.

Maybe it will work in your PC. If it doesn't, don't expect any assistance from ASUS.

Cons: * Drive is not compatible with the chipset on my motherboard
* Drive cannot be returned due to rebate
* ASUS Support is horrible - They don't know how to read, they refuse to offer a solution, when I offer solutions they ignore me.

Other Thoughts: My PC has an ASUS DVD drive in it which works just fine. I also have an older, slower Sony BD-RW drive that works just fine, which I was going to replace with this faster ASUS BD-RW drive.

When I connect the drive to my PC, it is seen in the BIOS, it is seen in device manager, and Windows automatically installs the driver for it. When I insert a disc of any type into the drive, it continues to report that no disc is inserted.

First let start with the initial contact to ASUS, I received the automated confirmation that my ticket had been submitted. I waited over a week with no response. Finally I resubmitted and got a response in a few days.

The response started out with "I understand your problem is ...." They were completely incorrect with their restatement of my problem. I would refer back to my problem description pointing out the details they had failed to comprehend. Overall there were a total of 8 responses from them where they continued to misstate the problem each time until finally they simply refused to help me and said I needed to replace my computer for the drive to work.

Additionally throughout the series of emails, they would ask me for information that was already in the ticket, and in fact had been a required field in the ticket submission form.

The ASUS support website has no updated drivers or firmware for this drive. Yet one of the misguided suggestions by their support person was to upgrade the driver. They should really check their own website before making invalid suggestions.

While this drive is an internal drive that uses a SATA cable to attach, one response told me to use a different USB cable to connect the drive. Where do they find these complete fools for tech support?

My motherboard is an AMD based system using the 890GX chipset, but when I attach the drive to a different motherboard from the same manufacturer with the 990FX chipset (a friends system), the drive works just fine. Due to this bit of information, it seems that a firmware patch to the ASUS drive should be able to resolve the issue. ASUS refused to even consider this as an option, and completely ignored my suggestion to that every time I suggested it.

Due to ASUS’s slow response to my support request, the rebate was already submitted in order to beat the submission deadline. Because of this, I'm now in a situation where I'm unable to return the drive to Newegg. I asked if ASUS could supply me a replacement drive with similar features that is compatible with the 890GX chipset. They basically told me to replace my motherboard to get their drive to function properly.

ASUS has been unable to direct me to any documentation that I may have been able to review prior to my purchase that would have indicated this drive’s incompatibility with the 890GX chipset, and yet has refused to provide me any solution short telling me to buy a new computer at my own expense.

What a ridiculous excuse for product support!!!!
