3 out of 5 eggsGood drive, bad enclosure

Pros: The drive itself is fine, but you'll be best served removing it from the included USB enclosure. I used it to replace a DVD-RW in a SSF Dell desktop. Works great. The drive is manufactured by Panasonic. Its front panel is a non-standard size (perhaps 1-2mm larger than normal), but uses the normal clip based mount so it can be swapped. On rebate the drive was ~42, make it about half what a bulk packed slim BDRW would cost.

The internal interface is SATA 2, with the mini type power connector.

Cons: The USB chipset is in the enclosure is terrible. I wager many of the issues other purchasers have had are the result of it.

Also, the drive and enclosure consume considerably more power than two USB ports can reasonably provide. The drive is rated at 1.6A @ 5v, I'd guess that the USB interface probably requires another .2A, giving a total of 1.8A. The labeling on the enclosure lists 2A, which should be a worst case requirement. The USB 2.0 spec states that a port can provide up to 500mA, so from two ports you should only be able to get 1A, leaving you at least .8A short. I'd bet the coaster issues are the result of the drive browning out.

Other Thoughts: Shuck the case, keep the drive. On rebate the drive was a good deal.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat When It Works

Pros: Small, ASUS brand, I like the square hole, you can put it on your hip and flip it up like a six-shooter

Cons: Stinkin' Windows 7 and 8, both OS' I was trying to use this on, lost the device in the OS, where the BIOS saw it just fine. I just looked at previous reviewer's tips, and presto it started working again in these OS'. Beware that any future windows updates may lose the device again, had that happen on one of my Windows 8 machines.

Thanks to the other reviewer, here is the original text:
Windows 7 and 8 with this drive attached, and one of the updates recognized this drive as an "initio combo device class" - if this happens, your drive will be recognized in bios but you will not see the drive in my computer. In case this happens, go to device manager, remove the initio completely (delete the driver), and your device will be recognized again.

Other Thoughts: Happy camper now that the issue is fixed and I can use my drive again.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, portable, slim, no drivers required.

Cons: can have a weird drive issue with windows 7

Other Thoughts: I persuaded my wife to get this drive for me on sale and I really like it. Its just as fast as my previous samsung 12x bd-rom at reading blu-rays!

The portability is great which along with the fact that you don't need to install proprietary drivers makes for a huge plus when you want to use this drive among multiple systems.

One thing- I did do a new install of Windows 7 with this drive attached, and one of the updates recognized this drive as an "initio combo device class" - if this happens, your drive will be recognized in bios but you will not see the drive in my computer. In case this happens, go to device manager, remove the initio completely (delete the driver), and your device will be recognized again.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat external Blu-Ray drive for Mac

Pros: Works with Blu-Ray media
fairly quiet
small
stylish
portable

Cons: takes 2 USB ports

Other Thoughts: Great Blu-ray drive. I used this because my iMac has only DVD drive, and I wanted to rip Blu-Ray movies. Using DVDFab it works flawlessly. You can even PLAY Blu-Ray movies from it.

1 out of 5 eggsOops.

Pros: ....Looks pretty?

Cons: Does not function as advertised. Does not play Blu Ray movies, creates stunning (and expensive) coasters. Included software is a joke. Even VLC player cannot play Blu Rays using this drive. Oh, and it uses 2 USB ports. If you try to use a USB hub, it doesn't even read discs.

2 out of 5 eggsWent downhill fast.

Pros: Vertical base is incredibly convenient.
Reminds me of the Monolith.
Did not enslave co-workers.

Cons: Woefully outdated software bundle.
Strange indentation between the drive bezel and the chassis seems designed to channel dust in to the drive.
First coasters I've had since the late 90's.
Piano black material attracts fingerprints like nothing I've seen before.

Other Thoughts: I bought this thinking I'd save a few bucks over the BDR-XD04 with almost identical specs.

The Asus drive did pretty well on the first few BD-DL burns, achieving 6.1X on 6X media, according to ISOBurn. Seemingly out of nowhere though, it was like the wheels had fallen off. Block errors started popping up out of nowhere, so before sacrificing another relatively expensive DL Blu-Ray blank, I started throwing DVD's at it.

Sure enough, my trusty TDK and Sony DVD-R and DVD+R discs were coming in at a 20% coaster rate. I checked in with the Asus site for a firmware update, but found no joy there.

It's probably worth mentioning that the burns were being made on a ThinkPad W520 with an i7 2860, 32 gigs RAM, and a n Intel 520 series SSD as the source drive.

Pros: looks great

Cons: Doesn't come with software to actually watch a Bluray movie. Useless to me.
