1 out of 5 eggsASUS BW-16D1HT fails to write

Pros: when it worked, for less than 2 months, was speedy. Actual rating would be far less than 1 star.

Cons: Suddenly failed to complete DVD/BD writes using 3 different media burning programs on 2 different computers and also failed image verifications of written-to media - after tray was recycled before verify, one program couldn't access the device. Missed return to NE by a few days, sent back to mfg for evaluation - same drive was returned to me shortly after with explanation that "Test ok". A total ASUS tech support bull$ht experience. Either the unit wasn't tested or wasn't tested properly or for long enough. A total joke.

Other Thoughts: I am an IT pro with over 20 years experience and know when a device is malfunctioning. Have been an ASUS client for many years (motherboards, burners, etc.). Will make a second attempt to get mfg off their dead butts and either repair or replace this boat anchor of a media burner. Barring that, I suppose there'll be litigation in ASUS's immediate future.

1 out of 5 eggsRebate process designed to be as complex and impossible as possible. Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.

Pros: -

Cons: Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. Just bought this drive. Had a $25 mail in coupon mixed into the price. While I went thru the rebate process it got clear to me that the process was designed to be as annoying and complicated as possible. It ended up with an option where I could pay ASUS a fee to not have to wait 10 weeks for getting closure on this. Embarrassing and complete waste of my time. It is my mistake that I accepted to play the whole game of mail in rebates, but it really is on ASUS to so systematically make this hard to do.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsAsus just gets better

Pros: Easy install Popped out the old Asus player and replaced it with this one. Started my machine and everything worked Set itself up Works great with Windows 8.1

Cons: Wish the Blu Ray Logo on the front was still Blue. That's it

Other Thoughts: There is so much pleasure watching a movie with this player. Wish they dressed up the front like on the early Blu Ray players from Asus

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Works

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I don't really use it much but the other day I popped a bluray disc in and it read it just fine. I haven't tested it well but for basic use this is a great device.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Optical Drive

Pros: This disc drive is fast, quiet, and seems to work very well although I have not tried to burn a blu ray with it yet. It works great with everything else and I will test the blu ray burning quality and capability soon.

Cons: No cons that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: I would highly recommend this optical drive. It is the fastest I have ever used, and it is well worth the investment for the higher price.

1 out of 5 eggsTop-of-the-line fails to burn DVDs

Pros: See below

Cons: See below

Other Thoughts: This optical drive (ASUS BW-16D1HT) fails to burn DVD-R discs on my system at any speed, and when tried with three different burning programs.

I swapped out the drive on the same computer with a cheaper Asus model that a friend had (ASUS BC-12B1ST/BLK/B/AS) and DVDs burned flawlessly. This strongly suggests a problem with the original drive.

I returned the drive for warranty service at Asus and they found nothing wrong with the drive and sent it back. So, I'm stuck with their top-of-the-line drive that can't burn DVDs, even though their cheaper one can on my system.

My recommendation: don't buy this thing.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGood media reader/burner

Pros: This thing does exactly what it's asked to do.

Cons: Not much to complain about, had this since September 2013, works like a charm.

1 out of 5 eggsAsus Customer Service

Pros: Can't give input for this product, BUT

Cons: Alejandro V. Cons I can give input.
"Installed it... never worked... called ASUS support...they blamed everything BUT their product."

I have had the absolute worst experience with Asus support multiple times. If you need support, you will lose every time.

Read the cons of others that are on this product and any Asus products and you will see a definite trend.

Other Thoughts: If you get a good one, everything will be great. If you don't, throw it in the trash and buy another brand.

1 out of 5 eggsDVD's will not play on Samsung BluRay Player

Pros: It has a rebate(if I get it) and it runs quiet.

Cons: The DVD's produced are coasters in a year old Samsung Blu-Ray/DVD player. I tried HP AND Verbatim16X, DVD-R disks with the same result. When loaded my screen shows "Loading, loading.................." then the disk ejects with "media is not compatible"! Same burn in my old Phillips DVD 8801 is just fine! Also, the lowest ASUS burning speed is 8X, so I could not test a 4X burn to see this would help.

Other Thoughts: Thought that this would be a great replacement for my old DVD drive but I was so wrong. I did try to contact ASUS for support. Several attempts to fill out their form online did not work. When I got to the drop down for my Model # the list was NOT for Blu-Ray or DVD burners and without my Model number I was not allowed to submit the form. Calling Asus phone number twice, resulted in over 40 minutes ON HOLD with mind numbing muzak and they never did answer. I really do appreciate the great customer service from Newegg!

3 out of 5 eggsMaybe a bad batch?

Pros: 16X bluray - Sata, black, matches everything else in the case, nifty blue activity light.

Cons: Reads approximately 75% of my DVD collection and reads all blurays. Oddly enough, the prior model BW-12 is a much better product. The BW-12 reads every disc I put into it - the BW-16 reads 'most' but not all.

Other Thoughts: BluRay playback software would have been great as that is $60+ to buy separately. The included software for these drives sucks - you'd be better off downloading CladDVD, DVDShrink, DVDFab, WinX DVD Ripper, Freemake, etc etc - any decent BluRay Playback software will run you a lot of cash, but for just ripping blurays or reading/writing files and discs it works fine when it can recognize a disc is in it.
