2 out of 5 eggsHigh failure rate after a few years

Pros: Great price, worked well for a time.

Cons: We ordered around 7 of these drives within my office. They all worked great for a time, but one by one they have all failed. The first was within a year, then another after about 2 years and so on and so forth. The unit that was in my system finally gave up the ghost today. After a while (even without heavy usage) they just plain stop recognizing discs. I tried updating the firmware from 1.00 to 1.03, no difference, still broken. Tried opening it up (it was remarkably dust free in there) and cleaning the lenses with rubbing alcohol, no difference. This particular unit was produced in Dec of 2011 and I believe we ordered it Spring 2012, so it did a fair cycle of duty before failing I suppose

Other Thoughts: I'm not saying that we didn't get our money's worth out of these units, but still, I'm used to optical drives being bulletproof and simply being replaced because they've become obsolete in terms of capability. Not the case with these, all 7 of ours failed since purchase, most with light/occasional use.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: It does everything you need a optical drive to do plus lightscribe support to create your own labels.

I have 2 of these drives and they always perform with no problems at all. They're fast, reliable and even look great in my PCs.

Cons: None.

1 out of 5 eggspoor quality

Pros: none

Cons: Drive is very picky about what movies and media it would play. Only one out of 4 movies were even recognized by the drive as disks, (including DVD's).

This is not an issue of copy protection, or media player, the drive won't even recognize the disk is inserted.

Upon calling LG tech support they immediately acknowledged that this drive has serious compatibility issues. They say it is only guaranteed to read disks from Verbatim, Maxell, Mitsibishi, and Panasonic.

They offered no repair or replacement option, no firmware update, and no remorse for selling a product that is virtually worthless.

Other Thoughts: The fact that LG tech support was so aware of this problem, and basically said "tough luck" to me should be a warning top anyone considering the purchase of LG products.

5 out of 5 eggsFollow up

Pros: I've had this drive for over 2 yrs. Not one coaster. Every bit as good as an NEC 7200S, which is a die hard.

My tower is highly cooled. Perhaps that's why 9/10 of my drives live long lives :)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Richard S. is wrong. I run Windows 7 64 bit. There is NO Problem with my drive, and being recognized.

This drive replaced a WH10LS30. It quit burning reliably after 30 or so discs. It still reads good, so I use it. The WH12 hasn't had one hiccup. Perhaps Richard simply got a defective drive :p

1 out of 5 eggswin7 64 is fatal on these drives

Cons: will not work on win7 64 bit. system will not recognize drives. NOT DESIGNED FOR WIN7 64.

Other Thoughts: SPECS DO NOT LIST WIN7 64 INOPERATIVE, maybe work with any 32 bit os... but adobe cs5 and up require 64bit os, and surely thought win7 64 was a logical choice. WRONG!

shame on lg. LAST TIME I BUY AN LG 'ANYTHING' and i made sure the knew that in my final letter [difficult to contact as well.. had to snail mail to get an email with no reply function as well.
