3 out of 5 eggsNot the best

Pros: Doesn't require external power source. Very robust, takes a fall without problems (not that I drop it often) and doesn't seem to be effected by dust (I've traveled/worked in deserts) or extreme moisture.

Cons: Doesn't come with any carrying case, doesn't read more readily-available RW Blu-Ray types of media, burns REALLY SLOW.

Other Thoughts: Works the same on PC as on Mac, but its not the best for burning. Am able to watch/read Blu-Ray on any computer with no driver installation required and even the smallest laptop can power the drive. Those are the only good points. The drive is slow - desktop or laptop, no matter the amount of memory or hardware specs its slow (2hrs to burn a single Blu-Ray with 36GB of data backup.) The drive will only read about two manufactures from the 6 I've tried.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat External Portable Writer

Pros: Writes Blu Rays
Comes with dual USB 2.0 cable to provide adequate power

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Item was advertised as a player but in fact is a writer. Cannot comment on the software as I have not installed it but with Imgburn this unit does a great job. If you need an external BR writer this unit does a fine job. Appears well-constructed and a nice form factor, "stylish."

1 out of 5 eggsFragile and Unreliable

Pros: I chose this Blu-ray drive because it is slim and lightweight. This, I thought, would make it easy to carry when I travel with my ultrabook (drive-less) computer. As it turns out, I never travel with it, because it seems to be too fragile.

Cons: Right out of the box, the associated system drivers would not work. For unknown reasons, several days later the drive started working. Although the drive works most of the time, reading CD-ROMs gives variable results. Sometimes the reading is reliable, sometimes it stalls out completely and stops reading.

Most recently, the disk mounting hub loosened on the motor shaft, which sets the disk some variable amount away from the read-write head, making it even more unreliable. The hub has become so loose that the disk-loading drawer hangs up and won't open.

Current attempts to contact LG Electronics customer service during business hours has been impossible. With LG telephone service, I get one prompt into their menus, and the automated system hangs up on me. With the on-line chat service, I'm placed into a completely unresponsive queue. The drive is still under their stated warranty period, but I have no way to contact LG customer service for an RMA.

2 out of 5 eggsSigh

Pros: Easy setup, compact and stylish

Cons: Now mostly dead - Only played 1 BD. A few weeks later, won't play the same BD disk, PowerDVD 10 fails to access BD media.

Other Thoughts: Guess I'll stay with ordinary DVD's.

2 out of 5 eggsExcellent Burner; Awful Software

Pros: This is an excellent burner and player. It has one power problem in that for many laptops, such as Lenovo's systems, it requires a USB 3 port to provide enough juice to run it. So those of you that have laptops with only USB 2, beware, you may not have what this burner needs to operate without harming your system. Perhaps there might be a way to increase the power to usb prots by changing the bios but I have not investigated this.

Cons: Now here's the huge problem with buying this burner: the Cyberlink software that LG includes to operate the burner's blu-ray functions. This software is a nightmare to use with 7 professional, and if you are using xp professional, forget it. It simply won't work!! Even LG's tech people told me to go buy NERO to run the burner!!!!! So you you are in for more expense if you have xp. As for using it with 7, it's very complex and convoluted and you are besieged with five or six different bundles of functions. Also, the game here is to force you to go to the cyberlink site and pay to update the LG provided software to their most recent package. Cyberlink costs as much as the burner!!! More money to spend to take full advantage of what this burner can do.

Finally, let me tell you that LG's tech support is located in the Phillipines. Once you figure out what they are saying (English language skills), you will find that their knowledge level ranges from hardly anything to adequate, but not excellent. They are nice people, but LG needs to do a much better job with tech support.

Finally, LG should ditch cyberlink, and provide something much more intuitive and universal that will work with xp-7 and 8.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this burner to anyone until LG changes the software.

3 out of 5 eggsReads, no burns

Pros: low cost, has M Disk support, plays DVDs OK Burns DVDs OK, reads BD.

Cons: Software with it, 'BD Suite', will not burn BD disks, without purchasing the 'upgrade', only DVDs

Other Thoughts: Windows XP Sp2,
will check for other burner software.

4 out of 5 eggsGood simple medium performance unit

Pros: Very easy setup and easy to use

Cons: a little slow. I actually returned it to try to find a usb3 drive. My desktop blu-ray screams in comparison and I'm wondering if it is the interface that is the difference.

3 out of 5 eggsLightScribe

Pros: No problems reading or writing blu ray disks

Cons: Tried to get the LightScribe feature working after a few months of ownership. According to the LG web site this model does not support LightScribe.

Newegg, you need to update your description!!
