5 out of 5 eggsGreat addition to modern pc

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Plays bluray movies with pretty much any of the free online players
Burns with Nero, tested and works fine
Plenty fast enough to burn the 6x discs that are currently available

Cons: Doesn't support 4k bluray (at least not yet, not with any of the software I tried including Power DVD 15, mpc, vlc, and others)

Other Thoughts: Would recommend this over the 16x drives, I have yet to find recordable media faster than 10x, most common and cheapest available are 6x discs so why bother with 16x write speed, save a few bucks and get the 14x drive. Works well, played a few movies on it, haven't tested dvd or cd burning.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not burn or even recognize blank Blu-Rays

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: It reads CDs and DVDs with no issues.

Cons: It simply does not accept blank Blu-Rays. I purchased a recommended 10-pack of Verbatim BD-R's and this burner doesn't even see that there's something in the drive. Even after assuming I may have had a bad disc...not a single one in the pack was recognized. Windows 10 sees nothing, either, with a "Please insert a disc into drive E" message. Nero sees nothing and refuses to burn files to a blank BR, also showing the message "Please insert disc into drive". The WH14NS40 is worthless, since burning Blu-Rays is the main reason to purchase it, and it can't even do that at all. I wish I had seen the other negative reviews on here before buying this - I suppose, the cheap price should have put up a red flag.

5 out of 5 eggsTotally worth it.

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: It works beautifully once hooked up! Reads like a charm, and burns like a pro, though the disks are pricey and honestly, I only burned something to see if it works.

Cons: Get appropriate software!! This isn't really a con because it tells you upfront, but it's important to note that you're gonna need something capable of playing Blu-ray. It took me a little bit to find software that would play all the special features, and not just the movie. I recommend PowerDVD15, which I also had to tweak to get to run well, but it's worth it.

Other Thoughts: Finally getting and playing Blu-Ray all the time, next hope is the hope of a solid ps3 emulator and I'll be set.

1 out of 5 eggsNever worked!

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Nothing!

Cons: Tried to burn my Flight Simulator install folder of about 50 GBs to a BD-RE XL 100 GB Sony disk. At about 8 GB in I was getting errors. Then the drive continually did not work at all. It would read music CDs, but can't write. I changed the SATA port to a different controller. Same story. I even bought a PCI-e SATA controller card and plugged the drive into that. Still no joy! I couldn't even update the firmware! Says checksum error! What's the point in firmware when you can't even update it?!

Other Thoughts: To make matters worse I have contacted R2B2 Buys for a RMA three times and NEVER got an E-mail from them. I'm now stuck with a $53 paper weight! I like how they are selling this drive for 60 some odd dollars now! I will NEVER buy from a third party again! Only from Newegg and I would suggest you do the same thing.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the casual user.

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Windows 10 recognized it immediately. Works well with CyberLink PowerDVD 15 Ultra for playback, burning, and copying. Even better with WinX DVD Copy Pro [free] for copying DVDs.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Okay, folks, this is where you put the objective information...

I had a couple coasters out of about 50 DVD copies. Why was this? Not because of the drive itself, it's because the discs being copied had bad sectors. This was ultimately mitigated by using WinX, which fixes bad sectors (so awesome!). When playing a BluRay disc, make sure your PC has had a few minutes to boot up, get on with its background processes, and let your media program fully load. As immediate playback will stutter a bit (even with an AMD FX-8350 and 16GB of RAM). I have only played one BluRay disc so far, as it's the only one I own, and it played fantastically. Playback also depends on your media playback program, not the drive. Also, this is an OEM product, which means playback software is NOT provided, so don't knock off an egg because you weren't attentive enough to know that. Another fine LG ODD product.

2 out of 5 eggsNot that great...

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Cheap?

Cons: Doesn't read discs too well...

Other Thoughts: I purchased this drive to archive my Blu-Ray and DVD library. This drive doesn't work through errors. My laptop drive and the DVD drive that came included with my HP Pro SFF reads discs without issue that this drive struggles with. I looked for a firmware update but the ones listed for this model don't pass checksum... Hopefully LG-Hitachi fixes the issues with new firmware.

1 out of 5 eggsLG Drives stop detecting Bluray aftera while

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Cheap

Cons: This is my 3rd LG Bluray drive. I<ve had a BH10LS30 and a BH14NS40 before.
They all had the same faith: after some time they stopped recognizing bluray disc.

I used them to backup and digitze my bluray collection.

They all died the same way, after a certain time, bluray disc do not show up in the OS and the drive start to make weird clicking/skipping noise.

I bought this drive less than 2 months ago...

I guess I would recommend staying clear of LG bluray drives.

5 out of 5 eggsCheapest Blu-Ray player around!

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Why buy an expensive smart Blu-ray player when your computer is so much more powerful? Works great for playing movies, but I have yet to burn one. Even works good on an older Pentium D with 4GB ram (will be upgrading it to a Quad-Core CPU soon so they should play even better). No firmware update was needed on mine, just plug and play. EDIT: Since this review I bought some 25GB Verbatim Blu-ray discs, and they burn and play great! It's much slower than a regular DVD-R but that's expected.

Cons: Not a con of the player itself but a special program is required to play movies. Fortunately I had Nero 2014 and it can both burn and play movies. Unlike what one reviewer said you don't need an $80 program, as Nero and similar ones are around $40.

Other Thoughts: Would highly recommend if you want to watch HD movies without a TV or can hook your computer to your TV. But to really enjoy it you have to get a nice monitor and decent GPU, which I have. And as this is the older/slower model I wouldn't buy it at full price, but I got it on Black Friday for $35 so you can't beat that! Otherwise I would buy the newer one.

EDIT: I recently upgraded my older Dell computer to an Intel Q6700 with 6 GB of RAM, and the playback is much smoother as well as very little CPU power used! All I need now is an even better video card!
