1 out of 5 eggsLG USB 3.0 Super Multi Blue External 14x Blu-ray Disc Rewriter Model BE14NU40

Pros: I got to use it intermittently.

Cons: It would consistently lose connection to the computer and also would not read discs intermittently for the first 12 months to approximately a 50 50 shot. After that it was a 90% failure rate in reads and connections. I then updated the firmware, to no avail. It actually worked for 24 hours than same failures. Since it only has a 12 month warranty its a brick. Had I read some of the other reviews throughout the web I would have know of this shortcoming and that LG would not rectify it due to cost. I admit, at first I thought it was my system because I had raid issues but after rectifying them I ran out of excuses to defend the drive. It is a waste of money. Don't be like me and buy something else.

1 out of 5 eggsLess Than a Year of Light Use and it Died

Pros: It works for a while

Cons: It's turned into a brick. What good is that?

Other Thoughts: I bought this just over a year ago for use with discs when I bought a new iMac that didn't have a drive. It's received fairly light use overall and now I have trouble getting it to register and show up as a device and it cannot burn to a CD or DVD anymore. It's been sitting there, with, maybe 3-4 discs burned a month, and in under a year it's become a doorstp.

4 out of 5 eggsSoftware inoperable with portrait displays

Pros: Given everything, reasonably easy install. Plays blu ray disks at full HD. Have not tried other tools.

Cons: I have multiple displays on my system. One of them, a secondary display, is configured in windows as portrait orientation. PowerDVD 10 will not even start in this configuration. There are lots of forum entries about this and this requires an upgrade to the latest version of the player to fix it. There is a charge for the upgrade. If you really want to watch a bluray movie and you don't want to spend the money, you can change the orientation of the display and then rotate the display and it works fine. In my particular case, it's a secondary display that is portrait and the primary display is landscape. If I want to watch a movie ON THE PRIMARY DISPLAY, I have to change the SECONDARY display to landscape. Note also that, if you do get it to start, PowerDVD10 does have an update, but the most recent update does not fix this problem. Support for portrait displays is considered NEW FUNCTION, not a bug, and therefore is only in versions after version 10. Silly because windows has had portrait displays for years.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is Eggmazing

Pros: I love this Blu-Ray burner! Super fast, plug and play, and looks great by my Apple. I can confirm other reviewers, this player/burner works with my iMac. Plug it into the wall and USB 3.0 and turn the device on. Easy as that.

Cons: Disc has jumped a couple times inside tray. Scared me at first, but after ejecting there was no damage done to the disc.

Other Thoughts: As of now, this is the fastest Blu-ray drive available. And the price is very reasonable. If you want the best performance this is the drive for you.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, works perfectly

Pros: Immediately recognized by Win 8.1 on two different computers. It is much more quiet than I thought it would be, though it can spin up and be loud for brief periods. It is extremely attractive. Someone reported that the main body of it is cheap plastic. I'm sure it's some form of composite, but it does not look cheap at all IMHO, but rather elegant. It seems very well built. So far, I am very pleased with the software suite that came with it despite being dated. The Cyberlink PowerDVD works well without issue. For those not wanting to use the software, there is a way to get VLC to play Blu-Ray, I've been successful on two computers. It takes a little work, but it does work quite well.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: The price is a tad steep, but it appears to be a well-built gadget and the software is really a plus. You get what you pay for, and I suspect I will not be getting too many more burners as these seem to be a fading technology. I hope this lasts for while. It looks like it should.

5 out of 5 eggsSome things cost more for a reason

Pros: I choose this particular external drive because it supports USB 3.0 and has its own power supply. So far, it's read everything I've put into it, and burned DVDs without a hiccup (though, problems with recording DVDs are usually due to low-quality blank media, not hardware). I used it with a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.1) without having to install anything (IIRC). I also appreciate that it came with a USB cable, since a Type-A to Type-B, USB 3.0 cable is not something I have stuffed away in a drawer.

It seems to be sturdy, and well-made.

Cons: As others have mentioned, the supplied USB cable is only about 2 ft (ca. 60 cm) long and therefore limits your options for where you can put the DVD burner wile using it. I put it away in a cabinet between uses, so I don't mind, but if you wanted it connected and available all the time, you'll probably want to get a different cable. (USB 3.0 type-A to USB 3.0 type-B required.)

Other Thoughts: In a quiet room, when the drive starts spinning a disc, it sounds somewhat like the jet-turbines of an airplane spooling up. Both in volume and tone. But if you want high R/W speeds, you need high RPM.

It's also rather heavy. Not something you would want to carry around with you. It doesn't claim to be anything other than a drive that sits on a desk, so I don't count that as a problem. Indeed, having plenty of mass probably a good thing, considering the high-RPM spinning.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Product

Pros: Under Windows 8.1, no drivers to install. Out of the box and watching a Blu-ray movie in under 2 minutes. I did already have a Blu-ray player installed on my computer.

Awesome product that does as advertised!!!

Cons: None what so ever...

Other Thoughts: I read these reviews and it boggles my mind. I did research before my purchase and therefore knew what I was buying when I bought it. It does exactly what it says it will do and exactly what I expect it to do; that’s what the product should be rated on PERIOD. I knew the size of the product when I bought it so how can I count that as a CON; if it’s too big, then buy a different one that is more to YOUR liking. I knew the eject button was under the tray (as has been all eject buttons on every CD/DVD/BD burner I have ever owned... so how can I count that as a CON; it ejects the disk does it not! The supplied USB 3.0 cable is 3 foot long which is ample length to hook up the drive in close proximity to your computer; which is where most users would want it. If YOU desire the product to be further away, buy an extension cable and don’t blame the product for your inability to see past YOUR tunnel vision. I rate this product 5 stars for its design, workmanship and all around ability to do what the manufacturer says it will do!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Drive

Pros: ▪ Fast!
▪ Quiet.
▪ Appears to work well with OS/X 10.8.5
▪ Have not had any issues (to date).
▪ Includes a power supply.
▪ Drive appears to be quite durable based on the number of discs that have been run through it. No noticeable increase in sound or vibration.

Cons: ▪ Could be smaller in overall size (height and depth).
▪ Included USB3 cable is problematic. Short and doesn't appear to be well shielded.
▪ Poor location for eject button.

Other Thoughts: ▪ Strongly recommend acquiring a well-made USB3 - in the length you need.
▪ Tray should extended out 1/4 inch more than it does - just to make disc insertion/removal a little easier.
▪ A smaller tray "front plate" would also be optimal.
▪ Would purchase this drive again.

Overall, very pleased with the drive's performance and compatibility.
