1 out of 5 eggsRubbish

Pros: None

Cons: This item is one of the biggest pieces of junk I have ever contemplated. The sloppy and fragile construction makes gives it a negative number on the durability scale (the two-piece body slides easily and could be broken by a muscle spasm) and the tray is equally fickle.

Second is the absolutely dreadful behaviour of the drive; I used it for 1 day and after labeling about 10 discs which took a lot of fiddling and rebooting (mostly it would just quit in the middle of a label and I'd have to trash the disc and reboot my computer), the drive failed completely and it doesn't work at all now.

Other Thoughts: I am returning it for a refund. I am flabbergasted that HP would make such a piece of utter garbage. I would never recommend this to anyone and I pity the person who buys this product.

1 out of 5 eggsIt doesn't work all the time

Pros: none

Cons: I tried to boot on 2 computers with this drive and didn't work. On one computer it wouldn't even recognize the drive in the BIOS. On the other computer I was able to boot from the CD but I couldn't install Windows 7 because it was asking for some driver which I couldn't find on HP's website. I'm very disappointed with this drive. I have a different drive that works fine in those 2 situations described above, so the problem is with this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little Burner

Pros: This thing works like a charm. I first bought an Asus burner that, While burning a system image of my wife's netbook, Stopped working after about hour of unboxing it. I then got this little gem and it did the job with no problem. I would recommend this little burner to anyone who needs an external drive.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes NOT work for Windows 7

Pros: It's an HP product and thin

Cons: It rarely works, and the print quality is poor unless you have the entire thing as a JPG image using the included software.

Other Thoughts: The drivers only exist for Windows XP and Vista.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Light, Compact, easy to pocket.

Cons: Double USB use one for power, one for data transfer. But most are like that. Could be damaged easily

Other Thoughts: Nero 9 is a burn engine. Go grab VLC media player or Windows Media Player and this drive will play DVD's......watching one with it now

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Just Fine

Pros: This helps with using the recovery disk for the HP Mini 1000. HP wasn't using their heads to make the recovery software available for download instead of a cd, since the mini has no optical drive.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsGood Product

Pros: Small, light, fast, functional.

Cons: So light that it is sometimes hard to close it without it moving across the table top.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive to use with my Acer netbook, and it has been a joy to work with. Read and write speeds are completely adequate, whether installing software, burning a disk, or watching a DVD movie--even in Windows 7 starter (You just need to use the right software: VLC Media Player, or even Real Player).
It has no power issues, either, so I use it with a different, shorter, more portable cable. No problems whatsoever.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't play DVD movies

Pros: Burns audio CD's OK. I assume data writing is probably OK.

Cons: If you want to watch DVD movies this device won't be for you. The software that comes with it, Nero 9 Essentials, will not play the audio. Nero support and HP support told me to buy an upgrade from Nero to make it work. The manual says you can play videos with the included software but it's not true. The description of the product by HP is false and misleading, and you'll end up paying more to make it work.
