4 out of 5 eggsGood but not great

Pros: Fast. 8mb cache. Lightscribe support.

Cons: A bit pricey when you consider similar quality drives are $20 or more dollars cheaper. I got this because it had Lightscribe support but I feel a bit ripped off since I didn't but it here and paid $15 more for it and the only difference between this drive and most of the others is the Lightscribe support.

***Buyers note***
OEM and many retail Blu-Ray drives only come with trial versions of playback software. Sony charges too much for the rights and OEMs can't bundle the full version for a decent price. You will likely need to buy additional software.

Other Thoughts: Beware reviewers who state high tech knowledge and don't know that lite-On manufactures optical (CD/DVD/Blu-Ray) drives for almost every company. Doesn't matter if the bezel says HP, LG, Samsung or Sony. There is a very good chance it was made by Lite-on. Also, someone who claims high tech knowledge and doesn't know these drives have gotten a bit shorter over the years is not very knowledgeable.

2 out of 5 eggsNothing but a Lite-On Drive!!!

Pros: First I must say I have owned a computer shop since 92'.

Another reviewer's post about this drive was absolutely correct!(well almost)

Its a Lite-On Drive. If you look at the sheetmetal stamped top cover of this drive and then look at the images of the formentioned Lite-On drives you will realize that this unit was produced by them.

In comparison you will see that other brands are physically shaped different. ie., Sony, LG, etc...

This comparison method is valid for CD DVD etc back 20 years Belive me I have stacks and stacks of old drives all the way back to the first 1x Manual Eject tray CD-ROM drive ever made

To get real infomation if your thinking of buying this drive you should read all the Reviews on the two lite-on drive models mentioned below!

Now it may say HP on the bezel so if your trying to match an HP tower then maybe this is the drive for you.....

Another thing , take a close look at the Images of the ASUS drive,,, Guess What, Yep!

Cons: Why pay more thinking your getting some kind of better or different quality because it says HP screenprinted on the plastic bezel when the components inside are mostlikely to be no different than that of a Lite-On. So if you dont like what you read in the reviews of Lite-On drives I wouldn't buy this either! Also looking at the Pioneer and Plextor stamping of sheetmetal they match each other so The same goes for those two brands.

Now in fairness I should add that the Firmware may be different. And the PNP Detected Identity of the drive will most liekly say HP instead of LIte-On .

Other Thoughts: Now where the other review got it wrong....
He said it was the same as the iHBS112
But reading the specs this drive supports Lightscribe
so this drive is mostlikely not a iHBS112 but a iHBS212.
It takes a trained eye to catch these things but its worth the trouble.

So I am still Review Surfing for the BD drive that I plan on incorporating into my HTPC build in an attempt to play 3D BlueRay on my Brand New LG 60PX950 Plasma.
Reading some of these reviews I may be waiting a while.

2 out of 5 eggsKinda Works...

Pros: Plays DVDs and CD just fine.

Cons: My computer will crash sometimes when I play blu-ray movies. I'm not sure if its because of the player or the Cyberlink software it comes with. I know it is not my computer. I built it will all high end hardware as you can see below. I also have 2 monitors so maybe it has something to do with that...not sure.

Also this burner is very expensive. I read that HP doesn't even make these. I recommend going with a different brand like LG or Samsung. Those guys know what they're doing.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: -8mb cache
-It's Blu-ray

Cons: -Tech support difficult to find, but it does exist.

Other Thoughts: I've read the reviews here and elsewhere about this drive making coasters. I have not had that problem backing up files and folders to the Verbatim 25gb BD-R non-LTH disks that Newegg included in the combo deal. I've yet to try LTH disks or backing up Blu-ray movies. My drive came with the latest firmware however.

For those looking for a firmware update go to the HP home page and type in the search box at top right "HP Customer Care," then in the search box on the next page type in: HP bd240i Blu-ray Disc Combo Writer exactly as you see it here (yes an older drive model) you gain access to a link "Manuals for HP bd240i" which if you click on that you get a page with a .pdf file called "HP DVD Writers Getting Help Guide." That document has the phone number you need to call for the latest firmware update and support. HP should include this document in the retail package.

1 out of 5 eggsNot So Good

Pros: Great features (if they would work), great price.

Cons: After burning (4) four Blu-ray (BD-R) discs, only one would play in a Blu-ray player. The other three were coasters. Its not fun creating Blu-ray coasters... I tried Verbatim and Memorex media. BD-RE discs worked fine. This appears to be a Lite-On drive repackaged under the HP Banner. There is no mention of this drive on the HP website, and no support for it either. I recommend the Pioneer BDR-205 instead. That drive has nothing but GREAT reviews.

Other Thoughts: Its a shame the way HP brought this product forth. I expect better from HP.

I returned this drive. Look for my review of the Pioneer drive next... :)

4 out of 5 eggsUsage info

Cons: Still trying to find out how to set booktype.

3 out of 5 eggsHP Info

Pros: Decent writer for the price with some impressive, yet hard to find specifications. Surprisingly, it has an 8MB buffer and fits nicely in systems that have drive covers (the kind that hide the front of the drive but open when the tray opens). It comes with Cyberlink's BD Suite which is a mixed blessing.

Cons: Very hard to find information, even from HP. After being bounced around several groups, no one had any info on this product at HP. Finally, I was told that even though its avail here and in stores, HP hasn't officially released this product yet, hence no information or support.

Other Thoughts: Product may be produced by either Lite-on or Phillips (you can look inside the drive to find out). The similar Lite-on product is the iHBS112 Blu-ray writer which has 3D playback capability.
