5 out of 5 eggsHP DVD1270e, a good deal

Pros: The HP external drive was tested as a DVD and audio player on a PC with Windows 8.1, and on a MacBook Pro with OSX Yosemite, without a hitch. On the Mac, it was necessary to toggle the On/Off power switch at the back of the drive to eject media from the drive.

Cons: The device is big in comparison to the slim drive units, but I wasn't looking for a portable device. If you are looking for a device for a Mac, I was unable to write to a DVD when interfaced to a MacBook. Not really a con, since this device was designed for PC type computers. FYI

Other Thoughts: The write features and included software was not tested on a PC that the drive was designed for; since what was needed was a media plaver for a MacBook .

5 out of 5 eggsCan't beat it for the price!

Pros: Worked well on my Windows 8.1 Laptop

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I purchased this drive so I could backup my files onto DVD+Rs. It worked perfectly. Some people complained of it's size, it is not a slim drive and it is not listed as such. I was also able to install DVD based programs with ease.

1 out of 5 eggsThis drive is junk!

Pros: None

Cons: Does not work with Win7 Home Premium. HP support is useless. There are no drivers on HP's site and Win7 Home Premium is not compatible with this drive. Other reviews on the web seem to bear this out.

Other Thoughts: On a Win7 Home Premium laptop it consistently stalls in the middle of an operation and generates a communication error. On a WinXP desktop the included software would not not install. On both machines the drive did not complete a single write operation or a single lightscribe labeling operation without errors. The only thing this drive cood do reliably is read operations.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA and not Hewlett-Packard

Pros: None.

Cons: Worked for exactly 21 seconds. Then, on board interface was dead. Unbelievably poor workmanship.

Other Thoughts: This is not REALLY a Hewlett-Packard device. It comes with a generic manual, and it's obvious that various companies just slap their logo on it and sell it. There is no mention of HP anywhere in the manual, etc. Joke. This is the first time in over 100 orders that I have received defective merchandise from Newegg--I am assuming the RMA process will be easy. (crosses fingers)

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent DVD burner

Pros: Quiet, fast and highly reliable drive. I burned about 25 SL/DL DVDs so far, and only one failed due to a visible scratch on it. Reads a single layer DVD (4.7GB) in about 5 minutes, and burns in about 5 min 20 secs.

Cons: If you power off the drive when the PC is in standby, you have to reboot the PC to recognize the drive again. I have not checked how to overcome this issue.

Other Thoughts: I read about external drives that do not require a power adapter, but I doubt about their burning speed and reliability when they are powered from USB interface. You can also find cheaper drives with similar specs, but if you want quality and reliability, just go for this!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent external optical burner!

Pros: -This hp optical burner is reliable hands down, I tried the new external LG version and its terrible! stay away from LG until they get their act straight

-This burner has a good laser so discs can be read easily. watch out some of those other brands have a weak assh burn on the media making it difficult for some readers.

-theres a power on/off switch in the back

-its just a reliable burner!!! x100

Cons: -well not really a con but if its face plate came in black options would be nice too

Other Thoughts: I noticed Lite-on has an exact same model as this HP one. They are probably the same and just rebranded
