5 out of 5 eggsHandy DVD for PC Repairs

Pros: Bus powered (no power cord)

Works with every OS I have tried, from Win2K through Win8 (including 2003 and 2008) as well as *nix and Mac.

If you make your living working on numerous different computers every day, it is inevitable that you will end up working on a netbook with no optical drive or an old machine with only a CD when you need a DVD drive, or you may just come across a machine with a busted drive that the owner refuses to replace because they never use it anyway. It only takes having this drive in your tool bag in one of those instances to pay for itself.

Cons: Tray loading is a little awkward for a portable drive. Slot load or top load would be preferred, but those are actually available at a higher price. You get what you pay for so don't complain.

Other Thoughts: The ridiculously short USB cable that came with it had two connectors to ensure that the drive gets enough power.

I immediately replaced it with a ~40" cable that didn't have the ability to supply additional power and have not had one power problem yet, so that is probably just a precaution. It really depends on the power supplied by the motherboard to the port you plug it in to. As I said, hundreds of computers and no problems yet.

5 out of 5 eggsOut of the box winner

Pros: Flawless install on Win 7 Pro X64. Drivers already resident. Did not install accompanying software (have had problems with HP accompanying software in the past). Comlete system: Zotac ZBox, HDMI out to a Samsung 55 in HD TV.

Works perfectly - displaying at HD on a 55 in flat panel. Photos look better than they have from any other reader or media, vastly better than the external CD reader that was there before. Video is fast, flawless. Super quality for our use.

Cons: None for our installation. Uses two USB ports (one for power, one for signal). Has a short (6in.) cord, which is perfect for our setup, as the drive sits on top of the tiny (8 in X 8 in X 1.5 in) ZBox and matches it perfectly.

Other Thoughts: Might not work so well in a different setup, but the short cord is ideal for us. No long wires dangling, and the second port provides extra power that the DVD burner requires.

5 out of 5 eggsGets the job done

Pros: I basically bought this drive for my netbook. Although i didn't buy from newegg, so far I'm really satisfied with my purchase. It's quiet, sleek looking, and doesn't require an independent power supply. The drive isn't as fast as a dedicated optical drive, but hey it's to be expected. No more fumbling with thumb drives when i want to do a clean install of windows!

Cons: The included software is junk.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Drive

Pros: It's small, quiet, fast, and can rip hidden pregap tracks from audio CDs. Works well with Linux.

Cons: Included USB cable is 6" long and will take up 2 USB ports (2nd plug for more power). Using a longer USB cable or a cable that doesn't use a 2nd USB port may be insufficient to power the drive.

Other Thoughts: In order to use an extended USB cable over 3', I have to plug the 2nd plug in to my phone charger to maintain sufficient power.
