5 out of 5 eggsSome work for a good drive

Pros: Quiet, fast, affordable, reads DVD-RAM.

Cons: As has been mentioned by a few other reviewers, this drive does have some compatibility issues, resulting in the drive being undetected in the BIOS. Most of the people have been having problems with this drive in their Toshiba laptops. My laptop, a Medion, had the same problem, a result of the drive being set to CSEL=Master.

To fix, you will need: Copper wire, tape, SH01 firmware from Samsung.

Open the drive, so you can work with pins around the IDE connector. The 49th and 50th pins are labeled, so just look to the side of the 49th pin and you'll see the 47th and 45th pins to the right of it.

Take a thin copper wire, and using tape to hold it, bridge the 47th and 45th pins. Once it's secure, reassemble the drive, put it in the laptop and it will be detected as the primary slave.

Extract the .bin and .exe from the firmware you downloaded, flash from DOS using -nocheck when you run the file.

Once the drive is flashed, you can remove the wire.

Other Thoughts: The little science project aside, the drive works very well.

1 out of 5 eggsDid not work with Inspiron 1501

Pros: Same dimensions as Inspiron burner

Cons: See other thoughts

Other Thoughts: Did not work with my Inspiron 1501 laptop. Might have been incompatible interface, or the DVD was DOA. Thanks for quick RMA by Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It works great. Easy to install. Slim form factor. Cheap. Great drive!

Cons: You do get what you pay for. It's not terribly fast, but it's a slim drive so it's actually a great value; not really a con.

4 out of 5 eggsDid not come with Nero CD, returned it

Pros: Slim, black

Cons: Did not come with the Nero software disk so I returned it. Newegg blamed manufacturer, which is was probably their fault. I needed one fast so ended up returning this one via RMA and bought a different Samsung DVD drive locally.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter Than Original DVR

Pros: Faster and superior to the original DVD recorder that came with my daughters laptop, a Toshiba A45-S250, which was a Pioneer DVR-K12D model. After modifying the Samsung, it burns CD/DVD better and much quieter than the original drive that came with the LT. Played back a backup copy of a movie & everything. Came with a Nero Express 7 Essensials CD software (nice bonus).

Cons: As a few others have stated, received the dreaded "IDE #1 Error" on upper left of screen on power up and the drive was not recognized by the laptops BIOS or OS. I read those problems here and still ordered it because the price is right compared to what they wanted for the Pioneer DVR-K12D that came with the laptop (which seem to fail after a short periods of time I found out). After I received the Samsung is when I tried to find out how to fix this issue. Apparetnly it happens to many models of the Toshiba laptops line, unfortunately.

Other Thoughts: 2 fixes are available from what I have gathered. One is you can go thru the hassle another poster here went thru to rewrite the firmware on the drive that will make it recognizable by the firmware in the Samsung DVD so the laptop recognizes it, send it to Toshiba so they load their firmware into it, (at a fee I might add) OR, do what I did. Apparently Toshiba laptops use a funky Low Cable Select signaling system to reach the drives, it is proprietary s/w & a pain to gather all that is needed to re load the DVD firmware that most come with so the laptop recognizes the new DVD player, and of course you take the chance of flaming the DVD should the burn not go well. I opened up the Samsung and "hardwired" it, if you will, to make it a "Master" drive. How? by finding pins 47 and pin 45 internally (which are right on top of the connector towards the center of the drive looking from the rear) on the interface connector and soldering those pins together. CAUTION: Both things above voids warr.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks just as it should!

Pros: Very fast, very quiet, everything I could want in a burner.

Cons: Didn't come with my laptop.

Other Thoughts: I burn Xbox 360 backups with this. Significant amount of coasters has been fixed. I replaced some old TS series drive that was a piece of you know what. Thanks NewEgg!!!
