From one of the first names in computer hardware comes an optical disc burner to make your life easier. The Samsung l SE-S084B Super-WriteMaster is a triple-format external drive which reads and burns DVD, dual-layer DVD, and CD format media. Dual-layer DVD's hold up to 8.5 GB of data, and are ideal for users who need to backup or share large amounts of data.

It’s incredibly easy to use right out of the box. Just plug the included USB Y cable (2 Type A to 1 Mini B) into the drive and the other two ends into your computer, and voila! Optimized for portability, this DVD drive utilizes the high-speed USB 2.0 interface to transmit data as well as power, so you don’t have to bring an additional power supply during travel. The drive supports Windows Vista and includes Nero 8 to help you design and edit your media discs.

The unit is engineered with Magic Speed technology which provides choices of low noise and high-speed modes for flexibility of drive operation; Tilt Actuator Compensation to adjust for deformed writing surfaces on media; and Double Optimum Power Control, which balances the laser power on the sides of the disc for enhanced writing performance. Both 12 cm and 8 cm discs are supported. And the manual eject function lets you eject the disc even when the power is off! Samsung offers all the flexibility and functionality your need in a portable burner.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT for PC and Mac

Pros: Has performed flawlessly for macs (10.3-10.6), Windoze (2000, XP, Vista) and Linux (Ubuntu). Have been able to boot ALL three operating systems from this drive. A MUST have for mobile tech support and netbook users.

Cons: none that I know.

5 out of 5 eggsIt is like the drive in my laptop

Pros: Good price, does what it is supposed to do. USB powered so no adapter, great for those running out of space on their multiple-outlet. The included burning software is a plus.

Cons: not free

Other Thoughts: This unit is just like the optical drive in my laptop, but encased in a small plastic enclosure. I have to hold it down to keep it from moving when opening and closing the drive. I don't count this a 'con' because I knew this going in. So if you are looking for something a bit heavier, like the older Sony DRX-820U, then this Samsung drive is not for you.

BTW, I wish the included USB cable was longer.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: I used this drive for 3 operating hours every day for 2 weeks after it arrived. The device performed flawlessly every time, including burning several DVD-R discs. It continues to function properly to this date, but is no longer used as frequently.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This device requires 2 USB ports in proximity to each other, as a single USB connection does not provide appropriate power to operate the drive correctly. Be aware that USB extension cables, unpowered or poorly-powered USB hubs, and some USB headers are to be avoided when using this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsFits in the bag better that the mediabase of a Dell D430

Pros: Small size, decent performance, price (I got it on sale for $45, not $65). USB powered only, no need for a power cord. Standard USB mini-B connection - works with all my other "2-plug" USB cords and devices.

Cons: the cord could be a little longer (I'd recommend getting a USB cord from one of the 2.5" portable hard drives where the cord splits in the middle, letting you plug into either side of the laptop with both plugs, but that's jsut me. I have a couple of these cords from failed [or destroyed] portable hard drives anyway, which I use)

Other Thoughts: I have a Dell D430 laptop, which (by design, and I like it that way) has no internal optical drive. That's fine except Dell made a "media base" which makes your system about 1/2 inch thicker to add an optical drive. The other option is a specialty USB cord (Lookup dell d-bay) external drive which would still be $60-$80 depending on what type of optical drive you get for it, and would ONLY work with your dell laptop. I love dell, but if I scrap this laptop and get another, or if I'm at a friend's house and they dont have a burner (yeah right like that would happen), I should be able to use mine, so I got this, and it works great.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small. USB powered. Inexpensive. Worked with just one of the 2 USB cables connected to my PC. Didn't try it on a laptop.

Cons: Super slow seeking. I've had slower spec drives that were much faster than this one. CD burning sure SEEMS slower than other 24X drives I've had. Using a 10ft. USB extension cable, the drive wouldn't work consistently. Although small in size, it is quite heavy.

Other Thoughts: The slow seeking speed made this drive for me too unpleasant to be useful, and its weight made using it as an occasional laptop accessory not something I'd want to do.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Well

Pros: No Power adapter, Nero 8 included, and Price.

Cons: Looooooooong install.

Other Thoughts: I installed this on my Aspire 1, seem to take 20 min. or so. I've burned 3 DVDs and it was pretty fast, did not notice any noise like some of the other reviewers mentioned.

5 out of 5 eggsCD Drive

Pros: Very quite, fast, simple plug and play
