5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: There's nothing wrong with this product, however, there's nothing that's stunning. Samsung has been #1 choice of manufacturer for me, and they didn't disappoint me this time too.
Easy to use, simple plug n play, it's wonderful.

Cons: Usual vibration and noise, but it's no different in other models and brands.

5 out of 5 eggsYep

Pros: Works Great for what its designed for. Works off only 1 usb port so thats what i wanted most. Yes only 1 on several different Port/Hub configurations on several different machines.

Cons: For me when this baby is spinning full RPM it tends to slide around on my desk from the vibration. Nothing major just interesting.

5 out of 5 eggss ok

Pros: This sugar is small, compact and solid. It has a good feel when you hit the open button and it hits your hand back. It is fast enough for the specs and meets all my needs with my Samsung Go. Plug and play.

Cons: Isn't a million revs a second with organic memory.

Other Thoughts: It is a great addition to a netbook set or laptop and the cost is nominal. Is a good deal. You will be happy if that's possible.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: One of the lowest priced USB DVD drives/burners capable of DVD+/- DL on the site.

Very light

Only uses USB, no power chord

Plug and play

Cons: Feels cheap (because it is?)

Takes up two USB ports. So the benefit of not having to carry around a power chord makes you give up the ability to directly back up a DVD to a USB on a system with only two USB ports. But you can always save the image to your hard drive first. It's not a big deal, just an extra step.

Other Thoughts: If you want to burn files, watch movies or copy files from a disc, this should do the trick. Not too much to carry around either. It's great for me since I rarely need to use a DVD drive.

I think this should cost $10-$20 less. It just feels very cheap and flimsy. I wonder how long it will last.

If you're using Linux, be sure to have the codecs you need and install libdvdread4 for movies.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed

Pros: Very Slim, Thin and Quiet. Just what I needed for my netbook and my computer (netbook has xp and computer has windows 7, neither actually needed the cd to install drivers or to recognize the device and use it).

Cons: Piano black finish = fingerprint magnets (not really a con but a fyi)

Other Thoughts: I use this to watch dvds on my netbook and its perfect. I have not actually opened the cd that comes with the dvd burner so i cannot comment on whats actually on it. Now I'm not sure if this happened with anyone else but it did with me. You can burn cds/watch dvds/listen to cds while only having one of the of the usbs plugged in. If you want to burn dvds you have to have both of the usb plugged in. Well with me this was the case not sure for everyone else. But anyone not a problem. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a external dvd drive

4 out of 5 eggsBeware the software!

Pros: Great DVD reader/writer, lightweight, portable

Cons: THE INCLUDED SOFTWARE ONLY PLAYS VIDEO--NOT THE SOUND!

Other Thoughts: If you buy this DVD writer and plan to use the included Nero Essentials software, you won't be able to hear the sound when you play a DVD movie---that is, unless you agree to buy an upgraded version of Nero. When I found out about this after installing the software, I immediately removed it. I plan to download a free utility such as VLC in order to play movies. I have Roxio software to use to record with.
Bottom line is this: don't bother installing the software with this DVD writer. Just go buy whatever you want to use (as a matter of principle, I refuse to buy any Nero product from now on) or find some freeware.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: Just ordered this drive on 1/9/10 ($45 and free shipping). The drive arrived on 1/12!!

The drive works just as promised. I also only needed to use 1 USB port, not 2 like listed in other reviews. So far no problems to report with the drive or burned media. It's very thin and relatively quiet for an external drive.

Cons: As said before, it shows fingerprints. I just left the plastic covering on the outside. It's classic "piano black" so I was expecting fingerprints anyway so no big deal.

At first I couldn't get it to recognize the audio on a store-bought DVD. The Nero that comes with the drive is a "crippled" version ("Essentials") and doesn't include a Dolby decoder. Luckily I had a version of PowerDVD from my desktop and once that was loaded on my netbook all was good. Volume of DVD movies is still a little low but that may be a function of PowerDVD. If you install Nero 8 Essentials that comes with the drive it includes a link to a 30-day trial for the full version of Nero 8. I haven't tried the Dolby decoder in that yet.

Other Thoughts: Great drive for the price. Still too early to tell about durability but so far I am very happy with the purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't burn with Acer one

Pros: irrelevant, as I can't use it to burn DVD's, but if you want just a reader, it worked, its small, and as a reader it worked using only one of the USB ports, no need to use 2.

Cons: DVD burner won't work.

Other Thoughts: The unit initally looked good when I plugged it in. It played DVD's and my already burnt DVD were able to be read perfectly and quickly. However I tried 5 times to burn a DVD with this unit, I tried dropping the speed to 3x from the default rate of 11x, I tried it on 2 different laptops. All attempts to make a readable data DVD failed. I then hooked up a different dvd burner, and both PC's made the DVD's perfectly (in all tests I used CDburnerXP software) I just don't think the 5v power supply from a usb port (even using 2 of them) is enough to power this unit. I will replace it with an externally powered dvd burner.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Samsung Optical slim drives

Pros: No external power supply or additional USB required

Cons: Died in 6 months with total burning of less than 30 disks. Samsung will not repair or replace it. Beware! Had not good luck with Samaung products.

Other Thoughts: Has my Sony DRX-S50U for over 3 years and it is still burning OK. Problem is it required an AC Adapter to run. DVD burners in my Compaq X1000 (5 years old) and in Dell D630 (3 years old) are still very good. Maybe Samsung products are cheap and broke easily.

4 out of 5 eggsSingle cable ALWAYS beats extra power cable!

Pros: The best feature of this DVD-RW is that is only requires a SINGLE cable; there is no extra power adapter to plug into the wall; it just connects directly to your USB port, and receives power through that. It worked fine on the computers I've used it on so far. It is also quite quiet.

Cons: The drive's USB cable actually takes up 2 USB ports in order to receive enough power; the cable splits into 2 plugs at the end. If you have a slim laptop that only has 1 USB port on the side, and 1 USB port on another side, you'd have to purchase an extension cable to get it to reach the 2nd port.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this DVD drive so that I would be able to install software on any client computers that still have a CD-ROM, or any servers that did not require a DVD for everyday use.

5 out of 5 eggsSlim and durable

Pros: Lightweight and durable, my girlfriend made the mistake of dripping the unit on the ground accidentally with a CD inside. The result; the drive did not chunk the slider out, nor did it scratch the CD! I must say she's either lucky or this product was built to withstand!

Cons: Takes up two USB slots to burn DVD's most of the time. USB errors occur if "power" USB isn't always set. No biggie, might be Mobo issue, I'll test it out on some other PC's.

Other Thoughts: So happy Newegg is here, they've never steered me wrong! Way to go guys, keep up the amazing work!

1 out of 5 eggsEject button defective

Pros: It looks nice.

Cons: When I first hooked it up, the eject button did nothing. Figuring it was a power issue, I went through all variations of usb connections, including different machines. It still doesn't work. Back it goes for a replacement, which hopefully will work better.

Other Thoughts: Return shipping seems high (20% of price), but what can you do?

1 out of 5 eggsNero 8 sofware crashes

Pros: Maybe the hardware was ok? I could not tell as the software would not work.

Cons: The hardware comes with the Nero 8 package to make DVD. The application was unstable and crashed halfway through when burning a DVD. This happened on two different PC.
Its a very slow process so I wasted an afternoon.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad for a netbook add-on

Pros: Basically needed a quick way to backup data from a couple of netbooks. Turns out scans from this little burner are not bad. It is very well built.

Cons: Old version of Nero ships with it... Not that I would use it anyway. Bloatware. You don't need to use two USB 2.0 ports, would have been nice to ship with a cable that did not "Y"... Have one that works and goes in the bag better.

Burns best with Verbatim MCC-004 +R media. DVD-R media results in very high PIF (usable results). Still, long term data storage should not be on optical media.

Piano black - fingerprints... ugh.

Other Thoughts: Installed Samsung Live Update to get latest firmware before use. Optical drives have started to go the way of the floppy disk and I really don't think they are needed on netbooks, but it will come in handy.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome for the money!

Pros: Installed flawlessly, beautiful slim black case, has burned + read w/o incident. Can't ask for more at this price

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: wish all peripherals + laptops came protected with clear coverings like what I use: BestSkinsEver. This drive is beautifully shiny but once you remove the temporary plastic film... its surface will get scratched/banged up. No change to function... just thought I'd mention it.

5 out of 5 eggsNeat unit

Pros: Sleek, light, easy to handle. Worked directly on old systems, as well as brand new ones. Found by BIOS making boot and new OS installation a breeze.

Cons: Slow

Other Thoughts: For some reason I always have problems with CD/DVD readers. They are slow, stop working, and are a general nuisance. Since I have several broken ones I decided to buy this USB unit and move it to my different computers when needed. I am very pleased with it and while I belive it is slower than and CD/DVD reader should be it solves my problem.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!! Slow shipping!

Pros: Burner works perfect. Didn't need to install anything and works great with Windows 7. Can't believe how slow Newegg was getting my shippments out though. I ordered this 4 days before another order from competitor and received the other one day earlier. Being a perffered customer is supposed to get free "Rush shipping". It never even goes out the same day and rarely the next. Very dissappointing. Might try one more time.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Item!

Pros: Great accessory for my netbook. It's compact, good-looking and seems well constructed. It operates quietly and disk insertion/extraction is simple and quick. Comes with Nero burning software that will do anything I'll ever need it to.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Will need to be connected directly to your computer (not through a USB hub) unless you have a powered USB hub or buy a power adapter for the drive itself. I suggest using other items that do not require much power like mice and keyboards to your USB hub and this directly to your computer.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Super slim compact design - barely larger than the disk itself. Powers off of a single USB port - so no need for extra power plug. Some reviews said that 2 USB ports were needed to power the DVD burner, but wasn't the case for me.

Cons: Apparently all new devices have the high gloss smudge prone exterior - this is no different.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good So Far.

Pros: I bought it with my HP Mini 311 netbook. It runs well, I've been using it to install software I only have on CD or DVD. For what it is, it looks pretty nice, too.

Burns dual-layer DVDs- not all externals do, that's one reason I chose it.

Cons: It's annoying to give up 2 USB ports to power it. However, you'll probably be using it at home rather than on the go, so you can use a powered USB hub etc. to give you more ports if you need them.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little USB DVD RW Ext Drive

Pros: Slim, thin, elegant case. USB powered (no need for external power source). Quiet operation. Great value as part of combo special

Cons: A little pricey if purchased by itself. External surface is a fingerprint magnet.

Other Thoughts: Got this as part of a combo special from Newegg which made it a super deal, ended up costing approx $10. I would not have bought it otherwise. This is a great addition to my Samsung N120 Netbook. Worked flawlessly as a plug and play device.

Please note that my experience on this device is only on my Samsung N120 and not on any other computer, although I do not see any reason why it would not function as well with other brands/computers.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy

Pros: Worked good at first

Cons: Died after 5 months of light use.

Other Thoughts: As I said this worked right out of the box but after 5 months of light use it stopped working. Newegg told me to contact SAMSUNG. They are giving me the run around. I crossed SAMSUNG off my list of vendors.

I have bought many things from newegg. This is the first one I'm disappointed with.

Pros: As compact as it can be. Reads and boots DVD+R and CDR discs. Only needs 1 USB if you're using USB 2.0 ports unlike other posts saying it needs 2 USBs. Fast shipping. Good price.

Other Thoughts: Bought to boot OSX and XP install discs and it works fine. Using it to build my HP Mini netbook. I now can boot XP and OSX from the internal HDD and Ubuntu from SD card. Not using or planning to use the provided SW.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: I have had no problems with it. I am connecting it to a new HP dm3-1030us laptop and it reads all disks fine. I have not used it yet to write a CD or DVD, but since it is a Samsung I do not anticipate any problems. Owner "MCSE2007" is WRONG. This device does allow you to boot a computer from it. In fact I am writing this from Ubuntu v9.10 that was booted from the drive (as a Live CD) with no issues.

Cons: None so far...

Pros: Great Newegg shipping... received in 1 day!
Will read DVD & CD...

Cons: Can not be used to boot from, even after upgrading the firmware.
(BIOS has been set up properly and can boot to USB Linux stick)

Other Thoughts: Bought this to reinstall OS on a clients computer who's CD/DVD drive went out. This drive is NOT for those of you who want to boot from it...

2 out of 5 eggsQuirky and problematic

Pros: Size

Cons: We bought this to write VHS tapes to DVD using single sided DVD-R disks. It wasn't recognized by our computers even after loading in updated drivers from Samsung. Disks weren't written properly and our computers froze up.
Maybe we just got a bad one but I'm not taking that chance, it' going back and I'm buying another brand.

Other Thoughts: Pass this by.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Product

Pros: -Compact and light weight
-Only has one USB cable
-It is powered by the PC

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have had no problems with this product at all and I would recommend this product to someone looking for an external drive.

There are some times when the drive is not immediately detected and mounted. I usually restart my PC and the problem is resolved.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality Device

Pros: This drive has proven to be durable and reliable. I've had it for many months. It consistently burns good discs, reads more discs than most drives i've used, and holds up to daily abuse. I keep this in backpack that gets tossed around a decent bit and the drive still holds up. Sometimes I rip discs to my netbook with it, install operating systems on computers with slow or non-functioning hard drives, or burn any of many types of data.

Cons: Isn't bluetooth/wireless and battery powered. Then there would be no cables instead of one.

2 out of 5 eggsToo fussy or just defective?

Pros: Slim, light as expected.

Cons: Feels a bit frail. Most importantly, did not recognize Memorex DVD+R Dl or RiData DVD-R as DVDs. Does not recognize RiData DVD-R burned on Toshiba DR-5 DVD Video Recorder as either DVD or already recorded. Ran firmware upgrade, did not resolve problem.

4 out of 5 eggsLike a Charm

Pros: Worked right out of the box with Linux Mint 6.0 on MSI Wind U100 (I have the extra 1GB of RAM). Put in a movie and Totem spotted it and opened, played the movie, selection screen worked fine. Not too noisy. Hibernated well, picked up quickly after hibernation. Good stuff.

Cons: Seems a bit low on the construction quality, but for the price and how it works (1 week so far), can't be beat.

Other Thoughts: The USB port on the DVD should be placed on the side, as this would allow it to sit on the desk next to the computer even better.

5 out of 5 eggsDVD Writer

Pros: It truly is slim. Writes fast, reads fast, 100% plug-n-play. Plug it in, and suddenly you've got DVD reading/writing power. Simply amazing for the price.

Cons: None so far, none expecred!

1 out of 5 eggsNot Worth It...

Pros: Works as a CD drive; clearly not as advertised.

Cons: Samsung does not offer firmware on it's website for this model, and does not have another firmware that is compatible with it. For your computer to recognize it as a DVD burner, the firmware has to be installed. Trying to contact their customer support through online means results in "please check your server and try again" even though you just surfed to their website. End result: it's new, unsupported, and for me is a surprising letdown by Samsung.

Other Thoughts: I used to buy Samsung, but until they start supporting their products again like they used to; for me they're going to become a thing of the past. The drive simply needs proper firmware, which is the only reason I haven't asked for an RMA. Heres to hoping Samsung will wake up and realize they overlooked something important.

5 out of 5 eggsNice drive

Pros: Very nice drive, works as expected. Read any media I put in it (even discs that look like someone surfed across the floor on). Booted any boot media I have, I used it to install OSx, Ubuntu & Win7 on my Wind.

Cons: Sometimes it gets fritzy if you try to abort an operation while it is doing something. Usually just unplug, then plug back in the USB plug in the back of the ROM. Pretty sure you'll have this with the majority of USB ROMs

Other Thoughts: I'd purchase it again

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet, Smooth, Works

Pros: Clean polished look, smooth operation with no vibrations or grinding noises, quiet, does what it is supposed to.

Cons: A little more expensive than some competing products, but probably worth the extra few dollars.

Other Thoughts: Overall, a very solid product.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't read half the discs I try in it

Pros: Small and looks good

Cons: Requires two USB ports and even with them it fails to read many of the discs I try in it. It is especially poor at being used as a bootable drive. Sometimes rebooting several times will get it to work, but usually it just won't read a disc that works fine in any other drive.

Other Thoughts: If you need a drive like this...keep looking.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: Slim, great looking and only requires ONE usb port, no external power.

Cons: Maybe be nice if there was a small sleeve or case to keep it in since it is so small and portable.

Other Thoughts: Those that complain about taking two usb ports, check you USB spec. If running USB2 then there is plenty of power for a single port, just leave the extra connector 'loose'. It will work just fine.

1 out of 5 eggssent it back!

Pros: none really--

Cons: Newegg did indeed list this as Lightscribe enabled on the day it was first posted as a "shellshocker". That wasn't the case, and I did send it back because of that reason. I think Newegg may have been mislead by Samsung in their spec listing because trying to get info out of that company is like pulling teeth. I would have been very happy if Newegg had offered me something else that was Lightscribe enabled --but no such luck!

4 out of 5 eggsWhere's the Lightscribe?

Pros: Super compact! This would be a good sidekick if you have a netbook as you could bring it with you and watch DVD movies wherever you go. It's a quarter the size of my old Samsung drive and it doesn't even need a huge power supply. It's plug and play in Windows XP...haven't tried it yet on Mac OSX or Vista. It's solidly built. Received item in 3 days.

Cons: Newegg listed this drive as supporting Lightscribe when they first posted it up. It was the only reason why I chose this over the others. When I got the unit...it wasn't listed anywhere on the box as supporting Lightscribe. It doesn't support Lightscribe. It looks like Newegg corrected their specs for this product.

Other Thoughts: If you have USB 1.1, the drive takes up 2 USB ports in order to power the unit up. My laptop has USB2.0, and it only needs 1 port. I was concerned that the drive would need 2 USB ports as my laptop only has 3 USB ports. But I'm happy that it only needs one....unlike some drives that needs 2 USB2.0 slots.
