5 out of 5 eggsWorks Well

Pros: High speed, low cost DVD burner

Cons: None that I could find

Other Thoughts: I subjected this drive to an 8 GB burn on TDK 8X dual layer media which can be troublesome. It burned the DVD perfectly at 8X speed without a hitch. This drive replaced my Plextor DVD burner which was starting to fail. The label says it is made by Toshiba-Samsung hence the TS in the model #. This was a good deal by my standards and I am happy I made the purchase.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap, Works, Loud

Pros: It was cheap. $13. IDE for older setups. It works. Reads, Burns, Writes. Nothing fancy, just works.

Cons: Sounds like a vacuum when it initially starts up, then quiets down after about a min. Not audible when it is reading, writing, or burning.

Other Thoughts: For the price, can't complain, but all my LG opticals have been silent. I will probably stick with LG. It doesn't say samsung anywhere, but if you need a driver, its on their website. No CD, as its OEM.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective drive received

Pros: great that it was some use of the IDE port on hand.

Cons: didnt work with both power and IDE cable plugged in. Once IDE was disconnected, it would spin up. Tested with other IDE cables and had the same result.

Other Thoughts: these defects happen.

5 out of 5 eggsEGGCELLENT IDE DVD Burner

Pros: Works great! Just know its an IDE DVD Burner and not SATA. I rushed into ordering it assuming it was SATA. Non the less I am happy with its performance. Great price, great deal!

Cons: Stamped into the metal it says "AUDIO PORTS NOT AVAILABLE". That kind of concerned me - but I hooked it up with the audio and All Is Right with the world. The Mis-Labeling is the only Con that comes to mind on this product. So YES - the Audio Ports ARE Available. Also it does not say Samsung on the label or anywhere on the DVD burner. Stilll - no biggy and no harm done.

Other Thoughts: After some investigation I discovered, this product was a collaboration between Samsung and Tashiba. Just a side note I thought I would share with you - just in case your drive does bite the dust while under warranty you will have the info should Samsung say "We know nuthing". It does not even show on their records! I talked with a Tech there about it. Still I have confidence you wont have any hassles with this unit.

1 out of 5 eggsDead on Arrival

Pros: None

Cons: Drive I received fails to read things properly. Mailing the drive back is prohibitively expensive compared to the price of the drive. So if you get a bad drive you basically just have to eat the cost.
