4 out of 5 eggsReplaced Zino HD drive that failed

Pros: Works
Cheap
Quiet

Cons: Could be a bit faster

Other Thoughts: Installed easily into my HD Zino when the original drive failed. Can't beat the price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat replacement for Asus laptop.

Pros: Fairly easy install. Faceplate removal was simple and anyone can do it by watching web videos.

Runs well with no skips. I rarely burn anything so I can't comment on that, but it plays everything exactly as it should.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Important. I have read hundreds of Google posts about Asus laptops having problems with their Blu-Ray / DVD drive freezing up. Basically the drives just hang for 30 seconds to 2 minutes and then the sound catches up but the video is moving at warp speed to catch up.

As usual, most of the help posts are do this, do that, turn this off, turn that off. Coming from a technical background I can tell you that you are probably doing nothing wrong. I reinstalled from scratch, ran numerous fixes, changed OS'es and nothing helped.

I finally read one post where a user said quite simply .. there are some known issues with the brand of drive that came with certain Asus laptops. If you have one call Asus for an RMA (they had great customer service and allowed me to RMA without wasting much of my time). Unfortunately I could not send off my laptop for RMA as I was afraid they would give me a refurb and mine was in pristine condition except for the drive.

I decided to buy a replacement drive and chose this Samsung despite it not being Blu-Ray. It has now run CD's and DVD's daily (I use it for my P90x workouts) and it has been flawless. No freeze ups at all and it used to happen 2-3 times an hour on that OEM drive (brand withheld due to policy, but it starts with an M).

I recommend this drive and also the ASUS laptop. Occasional components can have bad runs and that is the only complaint I have had about it.

4 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: It works, its cheap, and the plastic on the face is quite slim. It's not bulky like most laptop drives. Also, it came wrapped in bubble wrap and nothing else (like OEM products should).

Cons: It's slow, but that's what it is, and its advertised accordingly

Other Thoughts: It's the cheapest slim DVD drive on newegg, and it's gets the job done.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not fit with combo 1038442

Pros: It would probably work fine if newegg had included the correct case in their DIY kit.

Cons: This was part of the DIY combo #1038442 and it does not properly fit with the included box. The HEC case has a slot for a full sized optical drive, not this slim one. Do not buy the DIY combo 1038442.

Other Thoughts: I tried to RMA this since this does not fit in their case, and Newegg has refused to return my money (This has been the case with the 3 other pieces of the combo that were not compatible). They will probably lose me as a years long customer over their failure in customer service.

4 out of 5 eggsFine for what it is

Pros: Low-cost... I needed a slimline DVD for an SFF case where it will not see a ton of use, so I was not interested in spending much on it. This installed without issue, and I've used it to read DVDs and CDs and to burn DVDs.

Cons: It is a slow drive, but you can see that by the numbers above. Don't buy this thinking you are getting a fast slimline drive for a magically-low price.

Other Thoughts: This is an OEM drive, so you should be prepared for it to arrive in bubble wrap w/o any mounting hardware or cables.

That means it will not have the wee screws needed if your install includes securing it by screwing it in (if your case requires a drive like this to be secured like that, it should include them, but you'll need to verify that).

It also will not have the cable you will need if your install requires that... laptop installs normally wouldn't, but a desktop case normally will. For the latter, you'll want an adapter to go from Slim-line SATA to the SATA and power connectors you will have available in your case.

4 out of 5 eggsIt works!

Pros: It's not the fastest slim DVD-R drive, but it does work fine. I have one installed in my mini-ITX PC.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy to swap with the old drive. Started working right away with no issues.

Cons: Had no packaging, but that might have just been something I missed in the description when ordering.

Other Thoughts: Wasn't an exact match to my old one, but that's not an issue at all.

5 out of 5 eggsIt does the Job. Solid.

Pros: It's small and uses the standard slim line SATA connectors that all newer optical drives use. The front bezel is back with only raised writing. No paint. Very stealthy. Fast enough.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The front bezel is back with only raised writing. No paint. If you want a totaly black drive with no flash. This is it. The front of my case is totaly black no markings. You can't even tell it has a drive installed.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent slimline SATA drive.

Pros: You are buying this drive because it is the cheapest available slim optical drive on Newegg. It delivers on being inexpensive.

Cons: This is an OEM product, so it doesn't come with anything beyond the drive itself. So, if you're using this in anything besides a laptop, you're going to need to purchase a slimline SATA adapter. This should probably be mentioned somewhere in the product description. I purchased this for my Mini-ITX build and had to wait a week to finish putting together the computer because I had to wait for the slimline adapter.

Something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200470 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812706026 this would work.
