5 out of 5 eggsSamsung is Amazing!

Pros: Works like it should!

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: Paid about what I would have for a somewhat top end Blu Ray player now a days. If you can get it for less than $100 then I'd say go for it.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Reads BD content well, and this is running it with a Mac, not a PC (Macs have a native disgust of Blu-Ray for some reason).
The drive isn't too noisy, doesn't run hot, and is very portable, all excellent features. It also has the force eject pin hole that so many drives seem to lack without being a barebone drive.

Cons: I noticed the locking latch on the drive is fatally flawed. For some reason, you have to hand close the drive then hold it shut until you hear it click closed, most of the time.
This otherwise makes the newly inserted disc and tray blast open with the disk partially engaged to spin, making it obvious that the device thought it had closed, spun up, only for the lock latch to come loose. To me, that's poor design, but for the price I can't complain too heavily. It could theoretically ruin the drive over time, and because of the locking failure, discs when reinserted failed to load, causing me to have to remove the USB cable from the computer to get it to "restart" the drive.

Other Thoughts: While the drive does work fantastically while it's working, I am using it on a Mac, and I'm also using 3rd party software, so I cannot attest to the quality of any onboard software as I interfaced with none.
The hardware itself isn't flimsy, it's durable enough to be portable, but don't drop it. The latch issue may be limited to just a handful of these things, maybe mine's just flawed with a bad spring, but to me, locking mechanisms should be very robust, as to function the drive needs to be closed. I would've expected the engineers to know this and anticipate that perhaps the mechanism should've had something better, something more secure, as opening and closing the disc tray is something that will be done, the most.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Small BD-R Drive

Pros: Small, USB powered, works with Vinpower BD-R discs, inexpensive for a portable BD-R drive, works with IMGburn, BD playback

Cons: Cant think of one

Other Thoughts: I have had this drive for almost a year. Burnt quite a few discs and never a coaster.

5 out of 5 eggsnice

Pros: This is and external ODD that can do bluray and 3D. Although I do not own and 3D movies it is nice to have the option

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I am using this as an external ODD for a SFF build and like how industrial this unit looks

5 out of 5 eggsworking with mac Mini 2012 10.8

Pros: worked fine out of box on mac OS X 10.8, no drivers needed. Have not tested Blue-Ray.

Cons: current requirement is above 500mA, so they provide a USB cable with two A-type plugs (one is for data + power, other is power only). Would be nice if they also supplied an AC-to-5V DC adapter.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad but not great

Pros: Blu-ray; small, no power supply to carry around.

Cons: Since it doesn't have its own power supply, it's burning speeds are much slower. I have a 10 yr old drive with the dedicated power supply and it beats Samsung in any burn (CD, DVD, DVD DL) just does not have BD.

Other Thoughts: Does not work with Sony DVD+R DL discs sold by Newegg while my laptop (hl-dt-st dvd+RW gu40n) DVD burner does.
My laptop Dell E6410 staggers a lot while playing Blu-ray via the bundled Cyberlink software and the Samsung drive.
For burning, the bundled Cyberlink software is inferior to Nero.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not write DL DVD+R

Pros: Cheaper than the other options, might work well for other types of media.

Cons: imgburn could not start the write process with this drive, even at 1x speed, suggesting there was a problem with the media. I tried the same media with a LITEON drive and using imgburn again, and it worked right away.

Other Thoughts: Usually DVD-R has more problems, and I am using Sony DVD+R, which I never had problems with. They also worked well with a portable ASUS bluray writer.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm!

Pros: Reasonable speed (USB 2.0)
Highly compatible
Solid construction
Superb value
Throttles well

Cons: Not USB 3.0 (but those are far more expensive)
Outdated Software (I didn't plan on using it anyways)

Other Thoughts: I got this to use with my laptop and server mostly for backups and occasionally ripping newly-bought movies to my NAS (I hate having to find/load disks), and it does exactly what I want it to do. Toshiba makes very solid products and generally has very reasonable prices, so I snatched this up and never looked back. I couldn't be happier. If you want to watch Blu-ray movies with this, you will either need to use the included software or find another decoding solution as Windows does't include the decrypting library used by commercial movie producers. Fortunately there are plenty of options to choose from.

Don't let the BD speeds scare you, this drive runs very well and the supported R/W speeds are about the best that can be done on a USB 2.0 external device. Keep in mind that 1x BD is about 4.5Mbps, which is about 30 times more than 1x CD and about 4 times more than 1x DVD. If you want faster, get an internal SATA or USB 3.0 drive. Another note worth mentioning is that if you're backing up lots of small files (i.e. documents, pictures, low-quality MP3s), you may find that you don't hit the max burn speed or the drive occasionally pauses (especially with notebook users). This isn't a problem with the drive, but rather a limitation caused by the seek time and read speeds of mechanical HDDs.

Since I was on a budget and needed to use this with my laptop as well other systems, this drive was perfect for me. If you plan on doing a lot of burning, you might want to spring for a USB 3.0 BD-RW, but for the average user this should fit the bill nicely without breaking the bank.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat Coaster Maker

Pros: Compact and external.

Cons: Huge problem is the duel USB plug format. Virtually impossible to use on most laptops.

Other Thoughts: I have used several different programs including Cyberlink, Roxio and Toaster. Every program returns a failed burn at around 90% With a drive error. I have twenty very expensive coasters. Not one single successful burn. The drive reads just fine.
