3 out of 5 eggsNice drive, no Mac software

Pros: compact, quiet

Cons: no included Mac software

Other Thoughts: I guess I should have combed through the reviews, but the drive does not come with software for Blu-ray playback on the Mac OS, juts Windows, which was my intended use. No complaints about the hardware, though.

3 out of 5 eggsCan't burn BD-R

Pros: Can read blu ray disc.

Cons: Failed to copy a 21G file on blu ray disc to my PC; Failed to write to BD-R 25gb, but my LG blu ray writer in my PC can.

Other Thoughts: Samsung's support is very poor.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive: Pay Attention to Media Used

Pros: Handles CD, DVD, BD[,RE,DL]

Cons: Doesn't support "older/slower" blank media

Tried burning an ISO image to HP DVD-R blanks and kept creating coasters, even at 1x write speed. Then noticed drive doesn't support DVD write speeds lower than 3.3x, and was trying to burn my HP DVD-R 2.4x blanks at 3.3x even though I selected 1x in ImgBurn.

Retries with a _GENERIC_ 8x DVD-R and worked great the first time.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Simple to install
Just works
Mac Mini (2011) sees it and uses it without issue

Cons: Lack of software, but...

Other Thoughts: Lack of software really isn't that big of a con. There is a ton of vendors out there that offer blueray players for OSX. Easy to plug in - but bear in mind you need *2* USB ports to plug into.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive, AV Works too

Pros: AV Mode for TV's
BDXL Support (Supposedly)
Feels Solid
Worked on Mac and Win 7

Cons: Maybe I wish it had a case?

Other Thoughts: The AV mode is what caught my eye on this model. Sure enough I plugged it into the usb port on my TV and could playback mp4's off a burned BD-R disc. No skipping and no problems. Took a while for it to load and for the TV to see it, but after about a minute of grinding it was ready to go. FYI I have a Samsung LED TV (first generation) so I can't say if it works on all TV's with USB. Burned great on a mac with toast on LTH media at 2x. I was able to read discs on Win 7 but I haven't tried a burn yet. Newegg doesn't mention it in the specs but according to Samsung's documentation this will support burning to BDXL or as they but it BD-R TL (Triple Layer) and support reading of TL and QL (Quad layer) discs. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great for Windows7

Pros: It's blu ray and it's a burner. and it works! Comes with PowerDVD which will play the movie

Cons: The software takes a while to install. I don't know if that's just me though.

Other Thoughts: Don't have alot of blu rays, but now I can go get some more.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks for me

Pros: Works fine on Windows, Linux, and OS X.
Included software allows playback of Blu-rays on Windows.
Mac can burn CDs on it.

Cons: Sometimes the tray doesn't want to close.

Other Thoughts: I haven't tried to burn a Blu-ray disc on it yet.
Blu-ray playback on Linux requires keys and VLC, playback on Mac requires paid software.

5 out of 5 eggsDOES work with a Mac

Pros: Looks awesome with the Mac, and unlike the other review, it definitely DOES work with it. Compatible means that it works with the OS. It does NOT mean there is Mac software included.

It works as soon as it is plugged in (takes two USB ports for power) and can read and copy files from a Blu-ray as soon as it is inserted. You still cannot play Blu-ray movies on it, however, but that is not the fault of the drive. Apple does not and never will support it for this.

But, you can still master video Blu-rays, though...

Using 3rd party software (I use Toast Titanium), you can master Blu-rays to use in any Blu-ray player. Toast Titanium allows burning to Blu-ray with a paid upgrade, keep that in mind. And the software isn't free. But the drive does work with a Mac, and works perfectly.

Cons: None for the drive.

Any negatives have to do with Apple's not supporting Blu-ray playing, not the drive itself.

Other Thoughts: Keep in mind when looking for a Blu-ray burner for a Mac, you will probably never see a burner that has Mac software included with the drive. Mac has kexts built in that enables the drive to function as far as the interface, and reading files for it is no problem at all. But, you will always need to purchase a 3rd party mac software package to be able to master video Blu-ray discs. And since Apple doesn't, and likely never will, support playing Blu-rays, you are limited to mastering.

1 out of 5 eggsMacs stay away! NOT Compatible

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: This product is labeled Mac compatible, but the package contains no Mac software. The Samsung website is obscure as to how to do the firmware update, and the firmware update is impossible if your device is not detected by the system. The firmware updater from Samsung froze during the download two times. I have 11 USB. I tried the device's two USB connectors in pretty much every combination in the system ports and hub ports. When the device finally was detected and updated and I put in a Blu Ray disc to play, the device overheated and the system disconnected it. Complete lemon.

Other Thoughts: It's really fraudulent for this to be labeled Mac compatible in any way. If you try it with both of the USB ports plugged into the main PC ports, which as a laptop user, I didn't want to do, you MAY make the thing happy. If not, I don't know.
