  • newegg More room for more movies The BD disc can really pack it in. When it comes to capacity, BD discs truly outsize – and outclass – DVDs and CDs. In fact, with a single layer capacity of 25GB and a double layer capacity of 50GB, you’re talking almost five times as much room as a DVD and 70 times as much room as a CD. Ready for a quadruple feature? Because that translates into 135 minutes of High Definition movie time and nine hours of standard definition movie time.
  • newegg Portability up! Noise down! Battery running time is one of the biggest hurdles for laptop portability. SE-506BB/TSBD's low power consumption provides longer working time than other external DVD drives. Even one USB port from a Tablet PC gives sufficient power to use the SE-506BB/TSBD.
  • newegg Enjoy the AV connectivity! AV devices such as TVs are available for multimedia files on your disc by connecting Samsung's external ODD via USB cable. Just give it two light touches with the tray open and the drive goes into AV connectivity mode. It lets you enjoy a variety of content including music, pictures, and video. From now on, Samsung external ODD is not just for storage - it's for all your favorite multimedia!
  • newegg Windows 8 compatibility The Samsung Slim External DVD Writer was engineered for ultra-compatibility, including Windows 8.

3 out of 5 eggsNot amazing

Pros: Compact, Samsung name

Cons: Poor software package

Other Thoughts: This would be a 5 star product if the software package with it wasn't bad.

1 out of 5 eggsNice drive, vile sovtware

Pros: Drive works

Cons: Nasty unusable Cyberlink Blueray software.
Worked once, then went into a loop
about

"The integrity of CyberLink PowerDVD is is at risk. Check your anti-virus software for malicious activities or try reinstalling CyberLink PowerDVD."

if you don't pay $60. US for an upgrade it will not work no matter how many times you re-install it

Other Thoughts: If you need an external reader, it's ok.

Best to avoid andthing with Cyberlink software.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Burner

Pros: I bought this burner to use with a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 to create DVD's and Blu-ray disks and it works perfectly. It's very small and weighs practically nothing. It's powered via the USB connection, no power supply is required.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This product is the perfect solution if optical media needs to be used with a Tablet/PC such as the Surface which is too small to include a built in drive.

5 out of 5 eggsfollow up review

Pros: see below

Cons: see below

Other Thoughts: From the beginning I had a split usb cable (split cord meaning it has an extra usb plug for additional power) that i purchased separately because most reviews I have read say there are problems writing disk, I forgot to mention this in my earlier review. If you supply more power it should work better than if you use the stock 1 socket usb plug in, I say should because i do not intend on trying to write disk with the stock cord I will be sticking with my split cord.

5 out of 5 eggsCompact, 1 cord, works with Linux, and as USB stick

Pros: Works with Linux (needed to use growisofs).
Single USB port for power and data - noY cable or wall wart.
Reliable
Can become "USB Stick" and work with your TV or other usb port media player
Inexpensive for what it does - good value
Compact size

Cons: Not the fastest
Need paperclip if unplugged.

Other Thoughts: I've been backing up and creating media under linux using genisofs and GROWisofs and it just works. I've had a few coasters (most were probably my fault), but very few - I'm calling a single miscompared sector a "coaster".

With the AV mode, I can view pictures, play mp3s or watch videos directly on my TV via the USB port (if the TV understands the format). Not quite a blu-ray player, but most of my media is m4v or mp3. This also makes transfers to tablets or other things which can't do iso/udf easier.

I haven't tried dual-layer media yet, but don't think it would be a problem. I got some Memorex BD-Rs at a local Office Depot to start and they've worked - Others might work better or worse.

This replaces all my other portable optical drives.

I've not tried playing blu-rays on a windows system so see other reviews about that.

I've not achieved the 6x speeds. That might require something special with the USB or may be the program and that it was from an external USB drive. It burned slow but accurately.

5 out of 5 eggsPortable Blu-ray writing on the cheap!

Pros: great write times, first blu-ray drive period plays disk, reads and writes fantastic, 20 blu ray disk without a hitch all disk read by PS3 big plus for that

Cons: takes up 2 usb slots, would loved have seen this with an e-sata would have been great. software is basic but gets me by

Other Thoughts: when most internal blu ray writers are still 100 plus dollars this makes for a great value, I can go from my laptop to my desktop fairly seem-less. 6x and better disk are still a premium but for a full disk write in less than 20min at 4x and under 50 cents a disk how can you go wrong?

5 out of 5 eggsNative USB Interface

Pros: Very low power required to use as there is no SATA -> USB interface, but rather a native USB drive.

Cons: Needed a native SATA Blu-Ray burner

5 out of 5 eggsA Must Have

Pros: This is a great little add on for the new hybrid laptop/tablets out there that don't have a CD/DVD drive. Plus it is a quick upgrade for the laptops you have that only have DVD playback capabilities.

Cons: It is a little slower than what you would expect from an internal drive; however it is only a USB 2.0 device. On a full single layer DVD disk it took 14 minutes to write, which in my mind is actually pretty good.

Other Thoughts: This adds new life to my laptop with a DVD drive in it. I now can watch Blu-ray movies on my laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsSE-506BB vs. SE-506AB

Pros: The compactness of this drive and the lack of an external power supply are quite nice. I've found the drive to be reliable for reading and writing Blu-ray and other media. This drive connects to a single USB port on the computer.

Cons: The SE-506BB is slower than internal drives, but that isn't much of a surprise. The USB cable that ships with the drive is short for some applications, but nice when you're on the go. It is sometimes difficult to get the older SE-506AB drive's drawer to latch closed. I haven't used the SE-506BB enough at this point to know whether this problem has been resolved in the newer model.

Other Thoughts: Part of the reason I wanted to post this review was to comment on the differences between the SE-506BB and the older SE-506AB. I've seen mentions elsewhere about the published "access times" being slightly worse for the newer SE-506BB. I've also seen speculation that the drawer latching mechanism might be improved in the SE-506BB. While I can't comment on the latter yet, I noticed immediately as I unpacked the SE-506BB that the USB cable has only one connector on the computer end. This is significant because the SE-506AB shipped with a cable that allowed it to draw power from two of the computer's USB ports and, although some users have reported success using the older drive with only one of the two USB connectors plugged in, I've had issues at times and settled on always plugging in both connectors. My guess is that the slightly worse performance of the SE-506BB may have been a tradeoff that lowers power requirements, allowing the drive to function reliably while pulling power from a single USB port.

Lastly, Samsung doesn't trumpet USB 3.0 performance on the front of the packaging, but I noticed that they list "USB 2.0/3.0" compatibility on the side or back of the box. Maybe this only means that the drive will work when connected to a USB 3.0 port, not that it has a USB 3.0 interface. I haven't had a chance to compare the performance of the SE-506BB on a machine that has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports.

5 out of 5 eggsFreeing Space

Pros: Works. Writes Bluray Data Discs. No power brick needed. Simple.

Cons: Doesn't not write BD-R LTH so be careful which disc you buy.

Other Thoughts: I needed space in my aging 120GB acomodata external hard drive. I had been using DVDs as a medium for my boxed data storing. DVDs are not good with using data storing for HD videos. This little device solved and freed more space now from my hard drives than DVDs. It works really well and has an option called AV mode, which makes it a portable bluray player. The AV mode works well with my HD TV, which is good new for my PS3. I don't have to turn on my PS3 just to watch bluray movies.
