5 out of 5 eggsGreatly priced and works what else can you say.

This review is from: SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208DB/TSBS

Pros: Shipped fast, and it does what it is suppose to do.

Cons: it is not made of gold.

1 out of 5 eggsCould be better

This review is from: SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208DB/TSBS

Pros: Light, fast CD/DVD drive. Until it stopped working, no issues.

Cons: Lasted 1 year, 3 months. Apparently the female power/data connector on CD/DVD drive is either glued on or a stamp fit. Noticed the power to the drive was coming on and off, lifted drive and it was dead. Opened case to find the female connector from drive rattling around inside drive. This drive was not mis-handled, it sat on a desk. In my opinion, a design flaw. Looking for another brand, hopefully with better cable connectors.

3 out of 5 eggsLess than Stellar

This review is from: SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208DB/TSBS

Pros: I am sure this drive will be fine for transferring files.

Cons: This drive cannot play a movie without pausing repeatedly to buffer/load.

Likely will struggle to burn a disc due to the stalls.

3 out of 5 eggsbest bang for your buck... I guess

This review is from: SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208DB/TSBS

Pros: Cheap and comes with some decent software

Cons: Very noisy, and the disc locks into place, so be sure the disc is in the tray correctly, unlike most optical drives that you just place the cd on the tray, then slide it into the computer and it's ready to go, this drive needs the disc to be locked in place with three separate locks, if this is not properly in place, it will possibly damage the unit or disc.

Other Thoughts: for the price this does more then enough, with the decline of optical drives I see no need to spend more on better quality for the amount of use it will get.

5 out of 5 eggsUseful IT tool

This review is from: SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208DB/TSBS

Pros: Works just as expected. Haven't had a laptop or desktop not recognize it so far. Design is small and light enough to fit easily in my tech bag.

Cons: I prefer micro USB since they are everywhere, This drive uses mini USB. However, the pictures show that, and I knew it before purchasing.

The housing is plastic and rather thin. I wouldn't put it in the large pocket of my tech bag that holds heavier items. I'm sure it would easily get damaged from banging around too much.

Other Thoughts: I use this to work on my client's laptops and desktops, often to do reformatting. It;s just easier than dealing with some of these slow PATA disk drives that take forever to recognize windows boot or recovery disk.

Works great with laptops that don't have a disk drive. So far, I've only used this drive with Windows machines.

Overall I'm glad I bought it. It's fairly priced, useful, and works.

3 out of 5 eggsAdvertised incorrectly, does not use USB 3.0

This review is from: SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208DB/TSBS

Pros: Work fine on Windows 7
Powered by a single USB connection

Cons: Listed as USB 3.0 but the device does not use a USB 3.0 connection. (It will work with a USB 3.0 port because the port is backwards compatible)

Other Thoughts: Slim, only takes 1 USB port to power and use it.
It is slower then an internal optical drive.

5 out of 5 eggsNo need for an Apple

This review is from: SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208DB/TSBS

Pros: Slim and light. Much cheaper that the Apple 'Super' drive.
Only thing super about the Apple product is the price.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: The Apple drives are overpriced for what you get. You can purchase 2 of these for the cost of a super drive.
Worked right out of the box no issues. Burned 2 discs without errors.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Fine

This review is from: SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208DB/TSBS

Pros: The idea is simple - take a laptop drive and sell it separately in its own plastic shell.

Got it for two reasons:
1. External drive for Asus T100. Works great - Win8 sees it fine. Reading is fine, haven't tried writing yet. Didn't need provided drivers.

2. Bring-up of new desktop build. Didn't want to buy a whole DVD drive just for that step, so used this. The new build booted right off power-up on the Win7 64b CD in this drive. Didn't even need to tell BIOS to boot off it. Super smooth.

Runs entirely off USB, including power.

Cons: Not the fastest drive I've ever encountered - probably because it has to keep a lid on power consumption since it powers off the USB. As noted above, it was used to load up a new blank desktop build and more speed would have been nice, but not a big issue.

Also, it choked on one game install disk, but I haven't tried that disc in other drives to isolate the issue. Also, I never used the driver disc provided in the package, which could also be the issue.
