Burners do not come with software that burns the dvds. They also do not need any special drivers, Just plug them in and they are ready to go. 
There are many programs available for free that will do all you need for burning. ImgBurn is my favorite. You can get it hassle free from ninite .com

I've ordered probably 2 dozen DVD drives from Newegg and only one ever came with a cable that said it was a 'retail box.' They are almost always what's called an 'OEM' part that means it's literally just the part with no disk, cable, box, etc. So no, it doesn't. However SATA cables are pretty cheap at only a couple bucks with free shipping. This drive has worked perfectly for me though, no complaints.

When you order OEM or upgrade parts, on your first order get some cables, adapters and a set of eye-glass screwdriver (or similar) these are really all the tools you would need to upgrade or replace / repair a PC. A ONE TIME expenditure and you're done. Working on PC hardware, for the most part is like the old-time Quasar-TV's they simply have "plug-in parts. The jumpers and assorted issues from the 1980's & 90's are generally gone. Repairing a laptop is different - there you best use a pen and paper to describe the order in which you made your disassemble (to reverse the process). PC-repair is the simplest thing one can do in consumer electronics. IF you have a system that's been dropped however; you may not be able to do anything but buy new. This is becasue low-level repair demands an understanding of both SMD soldiering and testing & use of specialized tools to remove data from a smashed drive (often an electronics forensics lab).

this model has no dvd ram support - most people find that unnecessairy.It is able to burn faster and is same size to fit in case.The motherboard will support it if one of the 4 serial connections on the motherboard are available [ like the one for the older dvd burner]  You have a micro-motherboard .Meaning it is small.But the case is mid-size atx so any standard size dvd burner should be compatable for that unit and any windows operating system

Is this compatible with a Dell Dimension E510 desktop computer?

Hi Jay, The E510 is one of many computers built when the industry was transitioning from IDE to SATA drive interfaces- The E510 supports both types of drives.

To answer your specific question, you need to look inside your E510. Simply pull the release bar on the top of the tower toward the rear, and the side panel will release. Remove it and look at the back of your existing DVD drive. If it has an IDE connector, this drive will not be a part-for-part swap out. If you're not sure what an IDE connector looks like, Google DVD IDE connector and look at the images.

You may still be able to use this drive if you only have 1 hard drive installed because the system will support 2 SATA devices- the 2nd one can be a hard drive or a DVD. Look at the wires connected to your hard drive. One of them (the longer one) is a power connector that will have other connectors attached to it before it ultimately enters the power supply box; the other wire is the data connector which goes directly to a port on the motherboard.

Look at the end of the data wire that plugs into the board- if there's a 2nd connector that looks identical to it and has nothing plugged into it, then you can use this DVD drive by buying a SATA data cable with the drive and connecting the DVD drive to the unused port on the board. Make sure your computer has a SATA power connector available for the DVD. It looks the same as the bigger connector on your hard drive.

Once installed you will need to enter your E510 BIOS settings to tell the computer to activate the 2nd SATA port. Instructions are in the Owner's Manual. You can look at the manual at the Dell Support site.

It's a little involved but not beyond anyone who is comfortable taking a screwdriver to their computer.

Is this Samsung DVD Burner with my Dell Deminsion 4700 desktop which has a CD/DVD reader and CD writer but no DVD writer; what else do I need to get it connected and writing?

All you need is a SATA data cable and a SATA power cable (And mounting screws, of course).  I'd guess your 4700 has power cables to spare, and, unless the Samsung you're going to buy is OEM, it should come with a cable.  I'd check to make certain of both of those, though.  If you have no available power cable, you could order a splitter at the same time as the deck, ditto the data cable.  Don't know the mounting system in your Dell, but if it takes screws, you could take a couple from already mounted hardware like your hard drive and cd drive if you wind up short on that issue.  Mount it, hook up those cables, and it should be good to go.  I didn't need a driver, it being plug n play.
